Sun Aug 1816:49Colin Rea Spins Seven-Inning Gem
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea improved to 11-4 on the season by shutting out the Cleveland Guardians over seven innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts. Rea has a 3.52 ERA and 1.15 WHIP this season over 135 1/3 innings pitched with 108 strikeouts. He doesn't boast a high strikeout rate, but outings like these show how effective he can be and has been for the most part this season. The right-hander is turning in a breakout season for the Brew Crew.

Wed Aug 700:24Colin Rea Fans Nine In Seven-Inning Gem Tuesday
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea continued his strong season in Tuesday's 10-0 rout of the Braves. Rea pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. The 34-year-old is having a career season, going 10-3 with a 3.38 ERA, a 7.28 K/9 rate, and a 2.65 BB/9 rate in 22 appearances (19 starts) and 122 1/3 IP. He has allowed a lot of hard contact and has significantly outperformed his underlying metrics, but fantasy managers can't argue with his peripherals this season. He will face a decent matchup in his next start against the Reds and is worth starting in at least deeper leagues.

Wed Jul 2400:58Colin Rea Fans Eight In Tuesday's No-Decision
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Colin Rea turned in a great start in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the Cubs. Rea pitched five innings, allowing four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. The 34-year-old has pitched well both in a traditional starter's role and as a bulk reliever, going 9-3 with a 3.60 ERA, a 6.87 K/9 rate, and a 2.70 BB/9 rate in 20 appearances (17 starts) and 110 IP. While his results have been respectable, Rea has allowed a lot of hard contact, so fantasy managers should be wary of potential regression in the second half. Until then, he and fantasy managers will look to take advantage of a middling Braves matchup in his next scheduled start.

Sun Jul 1412:51Rob Zastryzny Starting On Sunday, Colin Rea To Follow As Bulk Reliever
Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Rob Zastryzny will serve as the opener for Sunday's series finale against the visiting Washington Nationals, with right-hander Colin Rea set to serve as the bulk reliever. It will be Zastryzny's second opening assignment for the Brew Crew this year. In his first "start" for Milwaukee on July 1 against the Colorado Rockies, the 32-year-old southpaw produced a scoreless inning. Because he'll only go an inning or two at the most, Zastryzny can be ignored in fantasy. Rea is being protected as a bulk reliever on Sunday after he gave up a season-high seven earned runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last outing on Tuesday. The 34-year-old veteran went seven shutout innings on July 3 with four strikeouts, so he'll be hoping for a bounce-back outing heading into next week's All-Star break.

Tue Jun 412:09Colin Rea To Work Behind Opener On Tuesday
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Colin Rea will work behind an opener on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies on the road. It's unclear who the Brewers will use as the opener after going with Jared Koenig on Monday. Rea, 33, worked as the team's bulk reliever behind Koenig on May 25 against the Boston Red Sox and allowed two earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts in 5 2/3 frames in a win. In his last outing on May 30 against the Chicago Cubs, Rea had a no-decision while working 5 1/3 frames and allowing one earned run on one walk and five K's. Rea has had a solid campaign thus far for the Brew Crew, going 4-2 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 42 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings over 11 outings (10 starts), but the matchup on Tuesday against the Phils on the road is one to fade him in.

Fri May 3108:52Colin Rea Earns No-Decision On Thursday
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea earned a no-decision in Thursday's outing versus the division rival Chicago Cubs. Rea pitched well for the most part and it was a solo home run by Cody Bellinger in the top of the first inning that would be the lone damage against the veteran. Rea's final line on the evening would be five hits, one run, one walk and five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Rea has made two good starts in a row, but his season has been inconsistent overall. Rea is best suited as a streamer in favorable matchups and will carry a 3.77 ERA into next weeks starts versus a tough Philadelphia Phillies offense.

Wed Mar 1300:45Colin Rea To Start Season In Brewers Rotation
Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Tuesday that starting pitcher Colin Rea will start the season in the team's rotation. The 33-year-old made 26 appearances (22 starts) for the Brewers in 2023, going 6-6 with a 4.55 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 21.3% strikeout rate. Rea has looked sharp in his eight innings of work this spring and the Brewers currently do not have much pitching depth. While he may not hold much fantasy value in roto leagues, he could be a deep points-league consideration in favorable matchups.

Thu Nov 2 202321:22Brewers Re-Sign Colin Rea To One-Year Contract
The Milwaukee Brewers re-signed right-hander Colin Rea to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday that includes a team option for the 2025 season. In by far his most extensive work in his fifth year in the big leagues, Rea went 6-6 in his first full season in Milwaukee and also had a 4.55 ERA (4.90 FIP), 1.19 WHIP, 38 walks and 110 strikeouts in 124 2/3 innings of work over 26 appearances (22 starts). Given the injury to right-handed starter Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) that is likely to sideline him for all of 2024, Rea will have a legitimate chance to open the regular season next year as a full member of the Brew Crew's starting rotation. The 33-year-old will be a depth option for fantasy managers in deeper formats if that ends up being the case.

Tue Sep 19 202312:51Colin Rea Likely To Be Bulk Reliever Tuesday
The Milwaukee Brewers recalled right-hander Colin Rea from Triple-A Nashville on Monday, and he's likely to pitch in a bulk-relief role on Tuesday behind starter Trevor Megill as the team faces off with the St. Louis Cardinals. It will be more of a bullpen day for the Brew Crew as they look to get some of their starters some extra rest down the stretch, but Rea figures to be in the game the longest. The 33-year-old has appeared in 23 games (21 starts) for Milwaukee in 2023 and has gone 5-6 with a 4.89 ERA (5.01 FIP), 1.23 WHIP, 35 walks and a career-high 100 strikeouts in 114 innings pitched. Rea last pitched on Sept. 13 against the Miami Marlins and went 4 2/3 frames in a loss.

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber and Albert Almora Jr. became free agents Wednesday when the Chicago Cubs declined to offer contracts to two key players from their historic 2016 World Series championship. While Schwarber, Almora, slugger José Martínez and pitcher Ryan Tepera were non-tendered, the Cubs offered 2021 contracts to infielders Kris Bryant and Javier Báez, catchers Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini, and outfielder Ian Happ. They agreed to one-year deals with relievers Kyle Ryan ($800,000 in majors, $250,000 in minors), Colin Rea ($702,500) and Dan Winkler ($900,000), avoiding arbitration with all three. Chicago also announced it had claimed reliever Robert Stock off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. The 31-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment last week. Wednesday's non-tender deadline was the first major look at the state of the Cubs since Jed Hoyer was promoted to president of baseball operations last month, replacing Theo Epstein. Thu Jul 2 202015:12Cubs' Quintana cuts thumb washing dishes, undergoes surgery
CHICAGO (AP) — Already concerned about the depth of their rotation, the Chicago Cubs will have to get by for at least a little while without one starter because of a freak injury.Left-hander José Quintana had surgery to repair nerve damage in his pitching thumb Thursday after he cut himself washing dishes.Chicago did not have a timetable for his return.“There's a best-case scenario in which it heals quickly and his thumb feels good and he can resume a pretty rapid ramp up from that point,” president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. “He's been built up, is pretty far along. But there's certainly another scenario in which the nerve takes longer to heal and is going to be significantly delayed. We really can't forecast it. We just have to wait and see and hope for the best.”Quintana cut his thumb at his home in Miami on Saturday and needed five stitches, according to the team. The damage to the digital sensory nerve was revealed during an exploratory procedure in Chicago on Thursday... [More]

Wed Mar 28 201822:01Old guys rule with rebuilding Padres, who open vs Brewers
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The rebuilding San Diego Padres won't be hurting for veteran presence when they open the season Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers.Left-hander Clayton Richard, at 34 the second-oldest player on the team, will make his first career opening-day start. First baseman Eric Hosmer, 28, will make his Padres debut after signing a $144 million, eight-year free agent contract early in spring training. Third baseman Chase Headley, 33, is back after spending the last 3 1/2 seasons with the New York Yankees.Owner Ron Fowler doesn't expect the Padres to be competitive for another year or two, after another few waves of prospects come up from the minor leagues. That doesn't mean the veterans are going to mail it in."I mean, that's their vision from 30,000 feet," Headley said Wednesday. "I think guys in this clubhouse expect more than that. And that's really the only way to approach it as a player.
