Tue Jan 10 2023 | 14:39 | Blue Jays Acquire Zach Thompson |
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired right-hander Zach Thompson from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto announced in a tweet from the team's official Twitter account on Tuesday. The Blue Jays traded outfield prospect Chavez Young to Pittsburgh for Thompson. The 28-year-old pitcher made 29 appearances for the Pirates last season, 22 of which were starts. He posted a 5.18 ERA and a 4.87 FIP in 121.2 innings of work while logging 90 strikeouts compared to 46 walks allowed. He'll give Toronto some additional rotation depth after the likes of Alek Manoah, Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios, Hyun Jin Ryu, and Yusei Kikuchi. The Blue Jays designated right-hander ... [ More] |

Fri Jan 6 2023 | 13:12 | Zach Thompson Designated For Assignment |
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-hander Zach Thompson for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for the recently signed Rich Hill. In his first year with Pittsburgh and only second in the big leagues in 2022, Thompson appeared in 29 games (22 starts) and held a 5.18 ERA (4.87 FIP), 1.51 WHIP and weak 16.6 percent strikeout rate for the Bucs. There's a good bet that the 29-year-old will wind up unclaimed and be free to sign with any team on the open market. In his first big-league season in 2021 with the Miami Marlins, Thompson had a more attractive 3.24 ERA (3.69 FIP), 1.21 WHIP and 21 percent strikeout rate in 26 outings (14 starts) over 75 innings pitched. |

Sun Jul 3 2022 | 13:27 | Zach Thompson Activated, Set To Start Sunday |
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-handed pitcher Zach Thompson (forearm) from the 15-day injured list on Sunday. He will be the team's starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. This news dropped shortly before the first pitch on Sunday and it was a bit of a surprise. Jose Quintana had been lined up to start Sunday's game, but his next start is now being pushed back to Tuesday. Thompson was on the injured list for the minimum 15 days due to right forearm nerve inflammation. He's made 13 appearances (12 starts) this year and he's pitched to a 4.47 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. |

Mon Apr 18 2022 | 11:20 | Zach Thompson Starting Monday Against Brewers |
Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Zach Thompson (shoulder) will get the nod on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers on the road. Thompson exited his first start of the season last Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs early after taking a line drive off his right shoulder. But he will be able to start on Monday in a tough matchup against the Brewers, so fantasy managers should be looking for better options. The 28-year-old allowed two earned runs and five hits while walking one and striking out three in four innings last week. Thompson had a 3.24 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 66 K's in 75 innings over 26 outings (14 starts) for the Miami Marlins in his rookie season in 2021. |

Thu Sep 2 2021 | 19:45 | Zach Thompson To Move Into Bullpen |
Miami Marlins pitcher Zach Thompson won't be taking the mound as a starting pitcher for the rest of the season. The team announced that Thompson will shift into the bullpen down the stretch. Thompson has a 3.16 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 62.7 innings with the Marlins this season. This shouldn't be viewed as a demotion, but more about the team attempting to limit his innings. The Marlins don't want to push the rookie too much in a season that is already lost. Thompson's fantasy value has basically gone out the window on this note. However, he could be a sneaky option heading into fantasy drafts next season. Certainly someone worth considering at the back-end of some rosters. |

Sun Aug 22 2021 | 02:58 | Zach Thompson Pitches Five Good Innings On Saturday |
Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Zach Thompson pitched well on Saturday but was pulled after five innings. In those five innings, he allowed just two runs on three hits and one walk, striking out three. Thompson threw just 73 pitches (48 strikes) and was throwing well before being lifted for no real reason except that Don Mattingly is incapable of properly handling a pitching staff. Even the Marlins broadcast team showed displeasure at Mattingly's handling of the team in this one. It's been a long season, and Mattingly was already extended for next season. Thompson, meanwhile, has been great as a 27-year-old rookie, he'll take a 2.97 ERA into his next start. |

Sat Aug 14 2021 | 21:46 | Zach Thompson Throws Six Strong Innings On Saturday |
Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Zach Thompson was great in his start against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Thompson tossed six innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out three. Thompson was cruising through a struggling Cubs lineup (even though they scored 10 runs in Friday's game) and needed only 72 pitches (48 strikes) to get through the six frames. The tall 27-year-old rookie has been very good this year, and he'll take a 2.91 ERA into his next start. |

Tue Aug 10 2021 | 01:27 | Zach Thompson Only Gets Through Four Innings On Monday |
Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Zach Thompson only made it through four innings in Monday's start against the San Diego Padres. In his four innings of work, he allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out just two. He was facing a tough Padres lineup, but Thompson certainly did not make things easier on himself, throwing 75 pitches, just 42 for strikes. He'll take a still solid 3.09 ERA into his next start and hope for better command and the better results that tend to come with it. |

Sat Jul 31 2021 | 02:55 | Joey Votto homers for 7th straight game, 1 shy of MLB record |
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto homered for the seventh straight game, one shy of a major league record, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night. Jonathan India went deep twice for the Reds, including a leadoff shot that came on Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch with the Mets. Acquired from Cleveland in January, the veteran right-hander finally made his New York debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. It was an up-and-down day for the Mets, who made a big deal to get Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs before baseball’s trade deadline — and then revealed injured ace Jacob deGrom will be shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the NL East leaders before September. Báez was acquired from the Cubs along with right-hander Trevor Williams for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft. Báez is expected to join the Mets on Saturday and will play shortstop... [ More] |

Fri Jul 30 2021 | 22:31 | Zach Thompson Allows Just One Run On Friday |
Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Zach Thompson fell one out shy of a quality start on Friday against the New York Yankees. Thompson threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He did walk four though, and struck out five. The one run he allowed was a solo home run to brand new Yankee Anthony Rizzo. Thompson has been surprisingly excellent for the Marlins, but he took the loss in this one to drop his record to 2-4. He still has a solid 2.33 ERA though. |
