Manager Walt Weiss suggested Tuesday that Hawkins' (biceps) isn't close to rejoining the Rockies, the Denver Post reports.

Hawkins has made two appearances for Triple-A Albuquerque as part of a rehab assignment, but only covered 1.2 innings across both outings and was lit up for two runs on four hits and walk. It sounds like the Rockies want Hawkins to string together a few strong showings in a row before they bring him back into a bullpen that could sorely use some reinforcement. The 42-year-old would likely become one of the team's better setup options, but their doesn't seem to be much motivation to slot him back in as closer while John Axford continues to excel in that role.

Hawkins was tagged with an earned run in each appearance, so it's likely he will he will pitch at least once more in the minors before being activated from the disabled list. John Axford and Rafael Betancourt have pitched well in the late innings over the last few weeks, so Hawkins will likely pitch in middle relief once he rejoins the big club.

Though Adam Ottavino looks set to miss the rest of the season due to Tommy John surgery, Hawkins probably won't be a candidate to reclaim closing duties when he returns, as Weiss appears content to stick with his current ninth-inning man, John Axford.

Hawkins was relieved of closer duties earlier in the season and will now be placed on the 15-day DL. Over six innings this season, Hawkins is sporting a 10.5 ERA while allowing 11 hits. The Rockies have recalled right hander Scott Oberg in Hawkins' place.

Hawkins tossed a scoreless sixth inning in Tuesday's win over the Giants, while Rafael Betancourt handled the eighth and Adam Ottavino struck out the side in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss named Ottavino as the team's closer prior to Tuesday's game, and it appears as though Hawkins is now at least one seat away from slotting back into the ninth inning given that Betancourt handled the save chance Monday night when Ottavino was unavailable.

Hawkins will get "a break" from closing duties according to manager Walt Weiss, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

Hawkins has now allowed five earned runs in his last two appearances, blowing each save opportunity (though an earlier one earned him a win). Weiss did not provide a timetable or criteria for the 42-year-old's return to the ninth inning, but Rafael Betancourt will take over as closer for the time being.

Hawkins blew another save in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs, giving up three runs in the ninth inning.

Hawkins also blew a two-run lead in his previous appearance, but he ended up getting the win. The Rockies weren't so lucky this time around, as Dexter Fowler's three-run homer held up to give the Cubs a victory. There was already some thought that Hawkins would eventually cede the ninth inning to one of Colorado's younger relievers, and the 42-year-old's early struggles could accelerate the process. That being said, Nick Groke of the Denver Post expects Hawkins to stick in the closer's role for the time being.

Hawkins blew the save but picked up the win Wednesday against the Brewers as he allowed two runs and four hits while recording only one strikeout in his one inning of work.

Hawkins did pick up a save Tuesday, and he was 23-for-26 in save opportunities last season, so he's usually reliable. He's still the man in Colorado, but the experienced John Axford pitched a perfect inning to pick up the save Wednesday night and will threaten to compete for the closing job if the 42-year-old Hawkins starts to show signs of decline.

He needed just 12 pitches (nine strikes) to lock down Tuesday's win for the Rockies, and remains the bullpen arm to own in Colorado for now.

Hawkins has been touched up for eight runs on 12 hits over his 5.1 innings this spring.

Two absymal appearances have largely sullied Hawkins' overall numbers, but the small sample of work probably won't prevent the 41-year-old from opening the season as the Rockies' closer. While he was solid in that capacity in 2014, posting a 3.31 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, Hawkins' inability to make bats miss (5.3 K/9) to go along with his lack of save opportunities made him one of the least valuable full-time closers in the fantasy realm. The Rockies also didn't have many attractive alternatives at their disposal to challenge Hawkins for the gig, but that might change in 2015 with an experienced ninth-inning man in John Axford joining the versatile Adam Ottavino and bounce-back candidates Rex Brothers and Boone Logan in the setup ranks. Ottavino seems the most likely threat to Hawkins' job, given his more overpowering profile and flawless spring (no runs, 12:4 K:BB ratio over 7.1 innings).

Hawkins said Friday that he is planning to retire following the 2015 season, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.

Hawkins has not shown any obvious signs of decline and is the favorite to open next season as the Rockies' closer, but he will turn 42 later this month, and is apparently ready to hang up the cleats after one more campaign.

Hawkins' 2015 team option was exercised by the Rockies on Friday.

Hawkins finished 2014 with a 3.31 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 23 saves with the Rockies in 2014. The 41-year-old will now return to the Rockies for 2015, and could still be in line for late inning work and possibly closer duties again.

Hawkins collected his fourth win of the season Thursday against the Diamondbacks, tossing a scoreless ninth inning before Wilin Rosario hit a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the frame.

While Hawkins' September save drought continued Thursday, the win should at least temporarily placate his disgruntled owners. However, considering Hawkins was widely expected to lose his closing job to Rex Brothers at some point this season, perhaps his total of just 22 saves isn't quite as disappointing as it might seem.

Hawkins had a rare misstep in the ninth inning of Monday's victory over the Giants, giving up RBI singles to Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval to tie the game at 9-9. He would eventually escape with his third victory of the season when the Rockies plated the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

The blown save was just Hawkins' second on the season, but with only 22 saves on his season ledger to begin with, opportunities haven't exactly been plentiful. Still, the 41-year-old has surpassed expectations in not only hanging onto the closer's role all season, but in also supplying a tidy 3.00 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, despite pitching roughly half his games in baseball's most unforgiving park.

Hawkins (2.68 ERA) picked up his 22nd save of the season on Saturday facing the Diamondbacks, as he walked one and struck out two hitters in one inning pitched.

As far as closing options go in the league, Hawkins is turning into one of the best in the game this season. Aside from the lack of opportunities, Hawkins hasn't had a blown save since May 18 while putting up fantastic ratios overall.
