INF Ryan Goins (left forearm abrasion) was back at shortstop Thursday and was 0-for-3. He left the game Wednesday in the sixth inning after Rays SS Daniel Robertson stepped on his wrist and forearm when Goins was out at second trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt. X-rays revealed no fracture and no stitches were required. Goins is getting most of the playing time at shortstop since the season-ending ankle injury to SS Troy Tulowitzki.

1B Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning Thursday to end a tie in the 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. He has 33 homers for the season, one shy of the club record for switch-hitters hit by OF Jose Cruz Jr. in 2001. Smoak has 14 homers this season in the seventh inning or later, including six of his past eight. He has three homers in the eighth inning or later that have either tied the game or given the Blue Jays the lead.

RHP Chris Archer reached 1,000 career strikeouts Thursday when he whiffed Toronto Blue Jays C Miguel Montero in the fourth inning. He became the ninth pitcher in major league history to reach that plateau after 154 games. He joins RHP James Shields (1,250) and LHP David Price (1.065) as the only pitchers to reach 1,000 strikeouts with the Rays. He finished the game with 10 strikeouts and no walks, allowing three runs on five hits. He did not factor in the decision in the 5-3 loss to Toronto. "I might feel a little bit better about it when we get back to Tampa, or tomorrow," Archer said about strikeout No. 1,000. "Right now, it's irrelevant."

RHP Jake Arrieta (12-8, 3.73 ERA) tries for his seventh consecutive quality start Friday at home versus Toronto. Arrieta allowed a run and three hits over six innings of a 7-2 victory in Arizona on Sunday. He has gone 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA in eight starts since July 2. Arrieta is 3-2 in eight appearances (seven starts) versus the Blue Jays.

LHP Robbie Ray made a rehab start for Class A Visalia on Thursday night, allowing two runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out 11 and walked two. Ray has been on the seven-day concussion disabled list since July 28 after being struck in the head by a line drive the previous day against the Cardinals.

INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson made the defensive play of the game in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. With the Phillies having scored twice to close within 5-3, and still having men at first and third with no outs, the second baseman dove to his right to deny 1B Tommy Joseph a potential RBI single to center field. From the ground, Tomlinson flipped the ball to SS Brandon Crawford, who relayed to first for a rally-killing double play.

LHP Francisco Liriano worked 1 2/3 innings of relief and successfully induced two double plays. He has not allowed an earned run in four consecutive appearances spanning 4 1/3 innings after surrendering one in each of his first two relief appearances with the Astros.

CF Jake Marisnick finished 2-for-3 for his seventh multi-hit game of the season and first since July 31 against the Rays. Marisnick is batting .326 (29-for-89) in 42 home games this season.

3B Evan Longoria was 2-for-3 with two walks and a game-tying double in the eighth inning of the 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. His single in the fifth ended a 0-for-9 funk. After his booking double off the center-field wall, the Blue Jays won with a two-run homer by 1B Justin Smoak in the bottom of the eighth. "We just haven't gotten the big hits when we've needed them," Longoria said. "Guys are frustrated. You come in after the game and it's quiet. Nobody is happy. The losses are definitely tough at this point of the year. We're letting some games slip away." Longoria batted second Thursday for the first time of the season. He batted third in his previous 118 games this season. He batted second 15 times previously in his career.

RF George Springer stroked a leadoff single in the first inning and has a hit in each of his 13 games against the Diamondbacks. He is batting .444 (24-for-54) with three home runs and 11 RBIs plus 14 runs scored against Arizona. In 11 interleague games this season, Springer is batting .370 (14-for-46) with a home run and eight RBIs.

CF Kevin Kiermaier (right hip fracture) continued his rehabilitation assignment at Class A Charlotte, going was 0-for-3 with a walk as the DH Wednesday and 0-for-4 playing center field for seven innings Thursday. He could rejoin the Rays on Friday when they open a series against the Seattle Mariners at Tropicana Field. He went on the disabled list June 9.

OF Mallex Smith had an RBI triple in the 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday. He also doubled Wednesday after being limited to one extra-base hit in his previous 20 games. The RBI was his first since July 31 against the Houston Astros. He had gone 15 games without one.

3B Nolan Arenado left the game in the seventh inning when Lane Adams' line drive hit him in the back of the left hand, in the exact spot where he was hit with a pitch Sunday at Miami. X-rays were negative. "It hit a piece of my glove, which is good, but, yeah, exact same spot," Arenado said. "It's pretty swollen and it hurts a little bit right now. We'll see how I feel in the morning. I expect to be in there tomorrow, but we'll see how the swelling feels." Arenado leads the major leagues with 103 RBIs.

CF Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with his team-leading 28th homer and has scored 111 runs, tying his career high set last year. Blackmon is hitting .394 with 15 doubles, 13 triples, 18 homers and 41 RBIs at home this season. The last National League player to hit 14 or more triples at home was Hall of Famer Paul Waner for the 1928 Pittsburgh Pirates.

RHP Tyler Chatwood worked two scoreless innings Wednesday in his third relief appearance. He had not pitched in five days since he worked a scoreless 12th inning at Cleveland on Aug. 9 to earn his second career save and first since April 11, 2012. Chatwood, who is 6-12 with a 5.06 ERA, lost his spot in the Rockies rotation, said he has been surprised how quickly he can get loose in the bullpen. He can be a free agent after the season and doesn't figure to return to the Rockies. When asked his work in long relief can make him more marketable, Chatwood said: "I'm going into free agency as a starter. I think I have a pretty good track record at it. We'll see what happens."

CF Ender Inciarte went 2-for-3 with two home runs, two RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases and two walks. The multi-homer game was the third of his career and second this season, The other was April 12 at Miami. Inciarte is the third player in Braves franchise history to have two homers and two stolen bases in the same game. The last player to do that was Rafael Furcal on April 15, 2005. Inciarte has hit safely in 19 of his past 20 games and has a six-game hitting streak.

RF Nick Markakis went 1-for-5 and has hit safely in 10 of 12 career games at Coors Field and has reached base safely in all 12. In those games, Markakis is hitting.317 with a .417 on-base percentage.

1B Freddie Freeman went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and an RBI. He has reached base in 21 of 22 road games since being reinstated from the disabled list July 4 and is batting .326 in those games with a .417 on-base percentage. Overall since returning from the disabled list, Freeman is hitting .303 with eight homers and 27 RBIs in 38 games.

SS Dansby Swanson went 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two walks and has hit safely in six straight games, going 7-for-20 in that span. Since returning from Triple-A Gwinnett on Aug. 9, Swanson has played eight games -- all starts at shorstop -- and has struck out only twice in 30 plate appearances. He had 84 strikeouts in 362 plate appearances in his first 95 games before being optioned to Gwinnett on July 26.

LHP Patrick Corbin fell just short of his first complete game since 2013, working 8 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing four hits. Corbin reached 10 victories in a season for the second time in his career. He finished with 14 wins in 2013 when he tossed three complete games.
