RF Aaron Judge continued his notable rookie season by hitting his 49th and 50th homers during Monday's win over the Kansas City Royals. Judge tied Mark McGwire's 1987 rookie record in the third inning and then broke it in the seventh. Judge also became the fifth Yankee to reach 50 homers and his 108 RBIs are the third-most among Yankee rookies. Only Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio (125, 1936) and Tony Lazzeri (114, 1926) drove in more runs as first-year players. Judge also was named American League Rookie of the Week for the second time Monday and reached base safely for the 20th straight game. In his last 20 games, Judge is hitting .328 (22-for-67) with 13 homers, 25 RBIs, 25 runs scored and 21 walks.

He had shared the record with Cleveland's Les Fleming (1942). Judge then homered as part of the six-run fourth inning to give him 40 for the season. He's the second rookie to have at least 40 homers in a season, joining Mark McGwire who hit 49 in 1987 with Oakland. Judge wasn't done as he hit another homer in the sixth inning. He also became just the fifth New York player to hit at last 40 homers in a season by age 25, joining Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. "Pretty surreal," Judge said. "Never as a kid did I think that I would be in the same sentence with those guys. It's quite an honor. It's pretty humbling."

The first nine times were in the opening six weeks of the season as Thursday was the instance since May 12. Judge was on the field doing early batting practice for about a half hour, taking swings off a tee and hitting line drives off underhand tosses from hitting coach Alan Cockrell. As for his shoulder, Judge said he was not getting cortisone shots for the moment: "We've considered a lot of options," Judge said. Before the first game, Judge said his shoulder is feeling better. Manager Joe Girardi said he did not think the shoulder is a bigger issue than Judge let on. Judge also said getting cortisone shots in his shoulder is an option, but it has only been discussed. "Nothing yet," Judge said. "I've just been icing and just trying to take care of it, trying to maintain. ... There's been discussions. Right now, a little RICE -- whatever that is, rest, ice, compression, elevation.
