Mon Apr 9 201820:22Skidding Yanks star Stanton gets whiff of fan frustration
NEW YORK (AP) — Exasperated, caller Joe from Fair Lawn seemed to speak for every New York Yankees fan on the No. 1 topic in town."He is awful!" Joe hollered on WFAN radio. Not that Giancarlo Stanton needed to listen to the powerhouse sports talk station Monday to figure out how the masses felt. The slumping slugger heard the boos a day earlier at Yankee Stadium when he went 0 for 7, struck out five times and stranded nine runners in an 8-7, 12-inning loss to Baltimore."They're not going to cheer for that, so what do you expect?" Stanton said, adding, "got to settle down a little bit."The reigning NL MVP had never fanned five times in a pro game until doing it twice in a week. Those whiffs put him halfway to the career record for 5K games, held by Sammy Sosa. They also left him hitting .167 with 20 strikeouts in 42 at-bats in his first year with New York. His first week at home: 3 for 28, fanning 16 times. As some Yankees amateur historians have already pointed out — the great Joe DiMaggio struck... [More]
Mon Apr 9 201802:42Mets, not Yankees, off to sparkling start in New York
For one week at least, the angst in New York was on the American League side. While the Mets swept a pair of division rivals, the Yankees wrapped up their first homestand by losing three of four to Baltimore, with a couple extra-inning games going against them. The slugging tandem of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge has five home runs on the young season, but Stanton already has 20 strikeouts in 10 games and has heard boos from his new home crowd in the Bronx. After reaching the AL Championship Series last year and adding Stanton, the Yankees came into this season with high expectations, and it will take more than a few whiffs early in the season to change that. The Mets, on the other hand, finished 27 games out of first place in 2017, and the impressive rotation they'd assembled was struggling to stay healthy. Now the Mets are 7-1 after sweeping a two-game series with Philadelphia and taking three in a row at Washington . Only Boston (8-1) has a better record. Noah Syndergaard is back after... [More]

Sat Apr 7 201800:28Still going! Orioles-Yankees heads to 14th inning
NEW YORK (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are heading to the 14th inning tied at 3.The first 13 innings Friday night took 4 hours, 53 minutes, and included some wild misadventures on the bases. Most of the field level sections at Yankee Stadium were still about half full after midnight, though the upper levels have mostly cleared out.Yankees star catcher Gary Sanchez left in the 14th with an apparent leg injury while behind the plate.New York nearly won it in the 11th. With Didi Gregorius at third, Orioles right-hander Mychal Givens threw a breaking pitch to the backstop, enticing Gregorius to break for home. Catcher Caleb Joseph chased after the wild pitch, fielded the ball on a big hop and flipped it to Givens. The pitcher slid across home plate as he took the feed to block Gregorius and apply the tag.A video review upheld the call — just one play after a Yankees video challenge overturned what was initially ruled an inning-ending double play hit by Ronald Torreyes. It was nearly another big moment in a big week for Gregorius. He had a tying solo homer in the eighth inning off Miguel Castro that made Friday's freaky extra innings possible.Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge robbed Joseph of a home run in the 13th.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Conforto came off the disabled list to hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Stephen Strasburg, Yoenis Cespedes also went deep against the ace, and Jay Bruce tacked on an insurance gland slam, leading the New York Mets to an 8-2 victory Thursday in Washington's chilly home opener.Jacob deGrom (2-0) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam to finish is six-inning outing with a flourish. After walking Bryce Harper to fill the bags, deGrom got Ryan Zimmerman to fly out to shallow right and Howie Kendrick to line out to shortstop, before Trea Turner looked at a 94 mph fastball for strike three. Sun Apr 1 201819:16Snow in forecast ahead of New York Yankees' home opener
NEW YORK (AP) — Snow is in the forecast ahead of the New York Yankees' much-anticipated home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. After going into rebuilding mode, the Yankees fell one win short of reaching the World Series last year behind Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Luis Severino. Then they added major league home run champion Giancarlo Stanton in a December trade with Miami."It'll be good to be home and see our fans and feel the excitement they've got for this team," Judge said in Toronto.New York's advance ticket sales for the season are up about 650,000 from last year. The team's YES Network averaged a 1.46 rating for spring training telecasts, its highest ever and up 80 percent from last year. Sat Mar 31 201803:06Polanco's homer lifts Pirates past Tigers in kooky opener
DETROIT (AP) — Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 13-10 victory over Detroit on Friday — about an hour after the Tigers spilled onto the field to celebrate what they thought was a game-winning hit of their own.Nicholas Castellanos was initially called safe at home in the bottom of the 10th for the Tigers, but a replay review took the run away and the teams played on. Polanco's drive to right-center on a 3-0 pitch from Alex Wilson (0-1) finally gave the Pirates a comfortable lead — or as comfortable as could be on a wacky day in which both teams scored four runs in the ninth.Detroit put two men on base in the 13th, but Steven Brault (1-0) was able to hold on and finish his third scoreless inning of relief.By the time the 5-hour, 27-minute game was over, there were only three umpires and one manager left. Plate umpire Mike Everitt exited in the eighth with a concussion after being hit in the mask by a pitch. And Ron Gardenhire — in... [More]
