RHP Ivan Nova had to leave the game in the top of the third inning Thursday in Washington after the ball hit him on the pitching hand as he fouled off a bunt attempt on an offering from Nationals starter Edwin Jackson. Manager Clint Hurdle said after the game the X-rays were negative. Nova was replaced by pinch hitter and fellow pitcher Steven Brault, who inherited a 1-1 count and then grounded out for the second out. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said before the game Brault would be the starting pitcher Sunday. Nova ended the season 11-14 with a 4.14 ERA. He allowed one run on four hits in two innings Thursday against the Nationals. Tyler Glasnow came on to pitch in the last of the third for the Pirates with his team leading 2-1.

RHP Ivan Nova got a no-decision, avoiding a National League-high 15 losses, on Friday night. One of the two runs he gave up in five innings was earned, but it was his throwing error that allowed the unearned run to score. He gave up six hits, walked four and struck out two. It was the first time as a Pirates pitcher that Nova issued four walks, and the first time since Aug. 25, 2015. "The game could have gotten away from him early, and he didn't allow it to get away from him. But it wasn't his best stuff. I don't think he had a put-away pitch; he was just gritty," manager Clint Hurdle said. Nova's 30th start triggered a $750,000 bonus in his contract.
