Pirela was hitting .294/.341/.435 with no homers and seven RBIs in 22 games for El Paso. After grounding out as a pinch hitter Sunday, he is 1-for-6 in five games for San Diego.

INF Jose Pirela hadn't done much to keep his job, going 1-for-5, so the Padres found him to be expendable when they went looking for relief help in the minors Tuesday. The club demoted Pirela to Triple-A El Paso, leaving it temporarily without a backup at the middle infield positions. Pirela's only hit this season was a double. He struck out in two of his five at-bats.

OF-2B Jose Pirela was promoted from Triple-A El Paso Friday to give them an extra right-handed pinch-hitter on the bench. Until now, the role has been filled by Rule 5 draftee Jabari Blash, who is 3-for-16. Pirela, who was hitting .273 for the Chihuahuas, doubled in his Padres' debut as a pinch-hitter.

INF Jose Pirela was acquired by the Padres from the Yankees for RHP Ronald Herrera.Herrera, 20, was 8-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 145.2 innings pitched in 26 combined games (25 starts) between Class A Lake Elsinore and Class AA San Antonio in the Padres organization last season. Pirela, 25, hit .230 with one home run and five RBIs in 37 games with the Yankees last season. He missed the first month of the season with a concussion suffered during a spring training game.

Pirela was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.

Pirela, who appeared in 29 games for the Yankees earlier this season, will join the big club for the stretch run. He could see some action on the infield but figures to primarily play a part-time role.

Pirela will be called up by the Yankees when rosters expand Tuesday, Ryan Hatch of The Star-Ledger reports.

The 25-year-old hit only .212 over 66 at-bats with the Yankees earlier this year, but has been much better in Triple-A, hitting .330/.394/.441 with three homers and five steals over 59 games (227 at-bats). Pirela can play all around the infield and outfield, so he'll help the Yanks in a utility role.

Pirela was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre on Thursday, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports.

Cole Figueroa will replace Pirela as a bench bat for the Yankees thanks to his ability to play third base. Pirela will offer middle infield depth at the Triple-A level going forward.

Pirela is in the lineup Thursday against Houston and will be playing in left field for the first time in his Yankees career.

Pirela has gone 2-for-8 since getting recalled on Tuesday. He'll stay in the lineup Thursday with the Yankees giving Brett Gardner the night off and shuffling the lineup. In a limited sample size, Pirela has had success against left handers with a .391 batting average in 23 such at-bats this season.

Pirela started at second base Wednesday against the Phillies, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs.

He went 0-for-4 in his return to the Yankees on Tuesday, but this time flashed some offensive ability that's more in line with what the team is looking for. Pirela's hit .311 with a couple homers in 14 games for Triple-A Scranton this year, and he racked up 42 extra-base hits and 15 steals there last season. With Brendan Ryan having been placed on the disabled list and Stephen Drew on the paternity list (not to mention hitting .190), Pirela could be in line to see a decent amount of work at second base in the near future.

With Ramon Flores being sent to Triple-A and Stephen Drew hitting the paternity list Tuesday, the Yankees will bring up Pirela, as well as right-hander Bryan Mitchell to fill the roster spots. With Drew slated to return after just a couple of days, Pirela's stay in the majors could be a short one.

Pirela was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Wednesday's game.

An 0-for-2 showing in Wednesday's loss dropped Pirela's batting line with the major league club to .256/.273/.372 (44 PA). A corresponding move was not immediately announced, but look for Brendan Ryan to serve as the top backup middle infielder for New York moving forward.

Pirela went 2-for-3 with a home run in Sunday's win over the Angels.

It was the first homer of Pirela's career, as he's starting to find his groove at the plate as he's 5-for-11 in his last four starts. That stretch raised the infielder's batting average to .268 on the year, but with both Brendan Ryan and Gregorio Petit nearing returns from injury, it's unclear how Pirela's role will be effected.

Pirela went 1-for-3 in Saturday's win over the A's.

While his night at the plate wasn't particularly noteworthy, the fact that Pirela drew the start against the right-handed Jesse Hahn could signal a potential shift going forward at second base. Pirela hasn't excelled at the plate as he's slashing just .212/.212/.242, but with Stephen Drew struggling even more, to the tune of a .157 average, Pirela could be in line to see more regular starts.
