Breslow will start Saturday against the Orioles, Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports.

The Red Sox, wanting to limit Eduardo Rodriguez's usage at this point in the season, will turn to Breslow for a spot start against Baltimore. Interim manager Torey Lovullo said it will be a "bullpen game" for Boston on Saturday, with Breslow likely available for around 40 pitches. The 35-year-old journeyman has posted a 4.53 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 55.2 innings this season.

Breslow recorded the final out to log his first save of the season as the Red Sox defeated the Mets 6-4 in 10 innings Friday night.

Breslow got the call when Junichi Tazawa allowed a run on a hit and four walks, and he retired the only hitter he faced. The veteran lefty has a 4.25 ERA, but he is generally used as a specialist and does not really profile as a closer even though he has eight saves in his career. That said, the Red Sox bullpen is in total disarray - understatement - so it isn't impossible.

Breslow allowed one run on one hit while striking out one in 1.1 innings, getting tagged with the loss in Thursday night's game against Houston.

Breslow entered a 4-4 game and worked a clean eighth inning. Manager John Farrell wanted him to get two more outs before turning it over to Koji Uehara, but he got too much of the plate and Jose Altuve hit a walk-off homer. With the Red Sox having lost eight straight and falling 12 games back in the A.L. East, it's easy to see them moving on from the veteran Breslow.

Breslow was activated from the paternity list Monday.

After spending the weekend with his family, Breslow returns on Monday for the beginning of the Red Sox' home stand against the Braves. His return sends first baseman Travis Shaw back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Breslow will be required to miss at least one game, so he'll be eligible to return as early as Sunday in Houston. To take his spot on the 25-man roster, Heath Hembree was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Breslow gave up a hit, a walk and allowed two inherited runners to score in Thursday afternoon's loss to the Twins.

After a nice start to the season, Breslow has been knocked around. He's allowed runs in seven of his last 11 appearances (10 earned runs in 11.1 innings) and has fallen behind Tommy Layne as the preferred left-hander when crucial outs are needed.

Breslow has worked three innings over the past two games and may not be available Saturday. The left-hander is coming off the worst season of his career, but by all accounts was much healthier this spring than he was in 2014. He'll work primarily in middle relief.

Breslow tossed a scoreless inning in Wednesday's game against the Twins. He's made four spring appearances without giving up a run.

This is night-and-day from last spring when a sore shoulder delayed Breslow until late in training camp and he opened the regular season on the disabled list. He's been effective this spring and has bounced back quickly following his outings.

Breslow's fastball is up to 91-92 mph, much more velocity than he had at this time last season, WEEI.com reports. "I've never thrown this hard at this point in spring training," said Breslow, "Usually I'm at 86-87. It just feels really good coming out of my hand right now."

Breslow tossed a scoreless inning Wednesday, giving up a hit and a walk, and is encouraged by how his arm feels at this stage. He hasn't allowed a run in three spring outings.

Pitching in an actual spring-training game is something Breslow was unable to do last year because of shoulder soreness. He's well ahead of last year's schedule and is preparing for a role as Boston's top left-hander in the bullpen.

Breslow threw a side session Friday, something he didn't do until the very end of the last year's spring training, the Boston Herald reports.

Breslow, who recently signed a one-year deal with Boston, was delayed last year after a lengthy playoff run with Boston. He never regained effectiveness in 2014 and had the worst season of his career. Breslow will pitch in middle relief for the Red Sox and could pick up some late-inning assignments when a lefty is required. He's proved to be equally effective against right-handed and left-handed batters.

The Red Sox previously declined Breslow's $4 million option for 2015, but will welcome the lefty back at the 50 percent markdown. Breslow turned in one of his worst seasons in the majors in 2014, posting a 5.96 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 54.1 innings, but he recorded a 1.81 ERA in 61 appearances the year before.

The Red Sox declined the $4 million club option on Breslow, the Providence Journal's Brian MacPherson reports.

Breslow had a $100,000 buyout clause, which allowed Boston to get out of the contract with the lefty reliever. He posted a 5.96 ERA in 54.1 innings last season, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Breslow earned his first save of the season Monday, firing a perfect 10th inning against the Blue Jays.

After Koji Uehara was used in the ninth inning, the Sox turned to Breslow to close out the win. The lefty has struggled this month in a middle relief role, allowing six runs in 11.1 innings out of the bullpen. He owns a 4.74 ERA and 1.72 WHIP for the season.

Breslow allowed a run on two hits in 1.1 innings in Thursday night's loss to St. Louis. He served up a 423-foot homer to Kolten Wong and has now allowed homers in his past three outings.

Breslow's performance in 2014 has been nothing like it was in 2013 when he shouldered some of the set-up work late in the season. The left-hander has a 5.01 ERA and 1.79 WHIP with 24 walks in 41.1 innings.

If the back-to-back appearances go smoothly, he should be activated from the 15-day disabled list over the weekend. Breslow was sidelined for much of the spring with a shoulder injury. He posted a dominant 1.81 ERA in 59 2/3 innings last season for the Red Sox.

It was his first live appearance of the spring. Breslow has been slowed in Red Sox camp by left shoulder inflammation and seems likely to open the 2014 regular season on the 15-day disabled list. The Red Sox can back-date that disabled list stint so that he's eligible to join their bullpen in early April.
