RF J.D. Martinez had a high quality, though painful, at-bat during the seventh inning on Thursday. Martinez fouled off pitch after pitch after the count reached 3-2 before he rapped an RBI single to left to complete the 15-pitch at-bat. He fouled a ball off his foot earlier in the at-bat and was removed for pinch-runner Matt den Dekker after the single. Manager Brad Ausmus said Martinez, who began the season on the DL with a foot sprain, came out for precautionary reasons.

RF J.D. Martinez moved up from fifth to fourth in the batting order Friday night and will probably reside in that spot while DH Victor Martinez is on the disabled list. "I'm hoping he's all right," he said of Victor Martinez. "It's not going to change anything for me. They all know (how to pitch to) me anyway."

RF J.D. Martinez is either upping Detroit's asking price at the trade deadline or making himself indispensible to the Tigers when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Martinez slugged his 11th home run in his 29th game of the season Tuesday night, a two-run shot that keyed a six-run Tigers' sixth inning.

He is 8-for-13 against left-handed pitching this season and finished the game with a .477 lifetime batting average, with eight multi-hit games out of 12 against the Red Sox. He has two-plus hits in four straight games against Boston, the longest active streak against the Red Sox and the longest by a Tiger since Austin Jackson had four in 2013.

DH J.D. Martinez got the call as designated hitter when manager Brad Ausmus elected to keep regular DH Victor Martinez out of the starting lineup against a left-handed White Sox starter. J.D. Martinez doubled his first time up and then cracked his 10th home run in the fourth to start Detroit's scoring. J.D. Martinez has a Lisfranc ligament injury and using him as a DH means he doesn't have to put outfield stress on it.

RF J.D. Martinez fell a single shy of the cycle Friday night, collecting a double, home run and triple through the first six innings. Martinez batted in the seventh but flied out to right. "I mean, quite frankly, I would've taken him out of the game earlier," manager Brad Ausmus said, "but he had the opportunity to get a cycle, and I didn't want to leave that dangling out there. So, we let him go as long as we could. I'd rather get him off his feet every once in awhile to rest him, but you don't get many opportunities at a cycle."

RF J.D. Martinez blasted two homers for the second time in three games on Tuesday, including a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh. Martinez hit his third career grand slam against Baltimore RHP Brad Brach. Martinez, who came off the disabled list four games ago, also hit a solo shot in the third, and both long balls went to the opposite field. He had a two-homer game against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. His power display has energized a mostly dormant attack in recent games. He was also walked four times on Tuesday, twice intentionally.

OF J.D. Martinez is 4-for-9 since returning to the lineup after missing 33 games with a foot injury. He hit two home runs in Saturday's win over the Angels. "I'm just happy I can contribute to the team," he said Saturday night. "I've been down there (rehab) wishing I could help the team. Every time we lost it was frustrating." Since coming to the Tigers in 2014, Martinez is hitting .301 with 98 doubles, 85 home runs and 249 RBIs.

OF J.D. Martinez will rejoin the Tigers Friday after finishing a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo. He homered in Monday's game and has recovered from a major foot injury that had cost him the first month of the season. Martinez has hit .299 with 246 RBIs in his three seasons with the Tigers. "We're not expecting a lot right away, because he hasn't played," manager Brad Ausmus said. "But he's had a long rehab assignment and probably has had 50 at-bats. We'll see how it goes."

OF J.D. Martinez (Lisfranc) was 0-for-4 while playing right field in his third rehab game at Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. He is 0-for-11 after going 3-for-8 with a double, a homer and two RBIs in his first two rehab games at Class A Lakeland. He hit 22 homers and 68 RBIs with the Tigers last season.
