Fri Oct 7 201618:58Mets season-ending report: Rough end to positive year
NEW YORK -- New York Mets manager Terry Collins learned this season what then-Boston Red Sox skipper Terry Francona learned in 2005: The most challenging year for a manager isn't the year he directs a team to the World Series. It is the year after. The most chaotic season of Collins' managerial career came to a sudden end Wednesday night, when San Francisco Giants third baseman Conor Gillaspie hit a ninth-inning, tiebreaking, three-run homer off Mets closer Jeurys Familia to give the Giants a 3-0 win in the National League wild-card game at Citi Field. It was the second straight year the Mets were eliminated with a home postseason loss. But the Mets that were victimized by Gillaspie and Madison Bumgarner looked nothing like the Mets who fell to the Kansas City Royals in five games in the 2015 World Series. The lineup Collins fielded for the wild-card game featured just three players (Yoenis Cespedes, Curtis Granderson and Noah Syndergaard) who participated in the 2015 World Series -- and only... OF Yoenis Cespedes may have ended his Mets tenure on a down note in the National League wild-card game, when he went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in a 3-0 loss to the Giants. Afterward, Cespedes declined to speak at length with reporters, though he told the New York Post he hopes to return to the Mets next season. Cespedes is expected to opt out of the final two seasons of the three-year deal he signed in January. The Mets are believed to be pessimistic about their chances of re-signing Cespedes, but they also believed he would exit as a free agent last winter before eventually agreeing to terms with him. Cespedes batted .280 with 31 homers and 86 RBIs in 132 games this season, though he hit just .214 with four homers and 14 RBIs over 27 games in September and October.

OF Yoenis Cespedes' presence was key for the Mets, who were 72-54 when he started and 15-21 when he did not. He is an imperfect player prone to slumps at the plate and absent-mindedness in the field, but he is the Mets' most essential player. Cespedes (.280, 31 homers, 86 RBIs) likely will opt out of his contract at the end of the season, and the cash-poor Mets have to pray his quirks and age (31) turn off potential suitors and/or that his obvious affection for New York leads him to accept a little less than he could get elsewhere.

OF Yoenis Cespedes scored twice and was 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's 5-1 win in Philadelphia. Mon Sep 26 201616:18After tragedy, Marlins and Mets brace for emotional game
MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez was on the mind of virtually everyone in South Florida on Sunday, especially those who follow the Miami Marlins. However, the tragic boating-accident death of the 24-year-old All-Star pitcher didn't just impact those in his community.Fernandez was also respected throughout baseball. The New York Mets, who will visit the Marlins on Monday to start a three-game series that is sure to be emotional, showed on Sunday that Fernandez was on their minds, too.Mets left fielder Yoenis Cespedes, who like Fernandez was born in Cuba, hung up a jersey with his friend's name and his No. 16."Our guys are a special group," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We wanted to honor Jose, so we put up his jersey in our dugout. All our guys walked by and gave it a little tap."Cespedes said the tribute for Fernandez was the idea of Mets owner Jeff Wilpon, who had the jersey made."(Wilpon) came and talked to us in the trainer's room before the game," Cespedes said. "I decided I wanted to be the... [More]
