Fri Oct 30 202021:32Lester, Kluber, Hand boost free agent total to 175
NEW YORK (AP) — Jon Lester, Corey Kluber and Brad Hand were among 15 more major leaguers who became free agents Friday when teams declined their 2021 options, many the victims of budget cuts following a regular season without fans due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Also cut loose were Milwaukee infielders Jedd Gyorko and Eric Sogard, Chicago White Sox designated hitter Edwin Encarnación and left-hander Gio González, and Philadelphia relievers David Robertson, Héctor Neris and David Phelps. AL champion Tampa Bay declined 2021 options on right-hander Charlie Morton and catcher Mike Zunino but say it remains hopeful of re-signing them. There are 175 players who became free agents following the World Series and about 15 more can go free this weekend. Fri Oct 30 202020:22Dodgers decline option on RHP Jimmy Nelson
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Nelson’s $2 million option was declined Friday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing the right-hander to become a free agent. Nelson is owed a $500,000 buyout. It’s been a rough three years for Nelson, who had a career year with the Brewers in 2017, posting a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts, with 199 strikeouts. But he missed all of 2018 after right shoulder surgery, and was limited to just 22 innings last season with Milwaukee due to elbow problems. He had $277,778 in prorated pay from his $750,000 base salary. Nelson was among 11 major leaguers whose salaries were less than the $286,500 advance they received when the season's start was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gavin Lux was expected to be the Dodgers' second baseman when summer camp started. But a late arrival and struggles at the plate mean he won't be with the team when the season opens Thursday.Los Angeles optioned Lux on Tuesday. Manager Dave Roberts said he informed Lux of the decision before the Dodgers' exhibition game Monday against Arizona but is hopeful Lux can be back on the roster soon.“I just think there is a lot that goes with him and his swing and at this point he wasn't synched up,” Roberts said before Tuesday night's exhibition finale against the Los Angeles Angels. “I want him to get right. He started playoff games for us last year. That goes to show the confidence we have in him.” The 22-year old Lux, a first-round selection in 2016, played in 23 games last year, batting .240 with two homers and nine RBIs after getting called up in September. Wed Jul 8 202022:19New center field backdrop has Dodgers hitters adjusting
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers were eager to show off $100 million worth of stadium renovations to fans and a national audience at the All-Star Game this summer. Turns out, it appears only players are going to see the changes up close this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, which will keep the public out of the ballpark for at least the early portion of a 60-game schedule that begins July 23. The Dodgers won't host the All-Star festivities until 2022.The black tarp that served as the backdrop in center field is gone, replaced by a new center field plaza that may take some getting used to for hitters.First baseman Max Muncy was hit by a pitch on his left ring finger during the team's intrasquad game Tuesday. “I couldn’t really see the ball,” he said Wednesday on a video conference call. “I’m trying to adjust to some of the changes out there.”Muncy said he’ll stop swinging a bat while his finger heals, but he expects to be ready for opening day.The new batter's eye has...
