SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners turned a triple play against the Houston Astros more likely to be seen in a Little League game than the major leagues.Seattle recorded the three outs on one play in the fourth inning in Thursday's 9-2 loss to the Astros."That was an ugly play and not something we want to see happen," Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. With runners at first and second and no outs, Evan Gattis hit a check-swing ground ball to third base. Kyle Seager stepped on third and threw to second base to force Carlos Correa.Gattis finished running to first but turned to jog back to the dugout. Seager noticed what was happening, and Robinson Cano threw to Daniel Vogelbach, who applied the tag.Gattis said it wasn't because he forgot how many outs there were."I was really mad at the pitch I swung at and was really mad about grounding into a double play. I don't really know why I started running to the dugout," Gattis said. "At the time I wanted to laugh on the inside because of how stupid it was but it was a 0-0 game. ... I think I got so mad I couldn't think straight."It was the 12th triple play turned by Seattle and first since 2015. The Astros last had a triple play turned against them in 2016 versus the Chicago White Sox. Before the 2016, Houston had not hit into a triple play since 1989.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

MILWAUKEE (AP) — After facing Giancarlo Stanton for the first time, the Miami Marlins got to take on Christian Yelich.Stanton was dealt to the New York Yankees during the Marlins' offseason teardown, and Yelich was sent to the Milwaukee Brewers. Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna also were jettisoned as part of the payroll purge under new CEO Derek Jeter."He's a great kid," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said ahead of Thursday's series opener against the Brewers. "I loved having him. He can really hit. He'll be a handful to get out."Milwaukee sent top prospect, Lewis Brinson and three other minor leaguers to the Marlins in January for Yelich, a Gold Glove winner in 2014.Yelich started 10 for 27, then hurt an oblique and went on the disabled list. He returned Wednesday and went 1 for 2."It was definitely frustrating but those things happen," Yelich said. "We've got guys who were able to step in and we were able to win some games. It's good to be back. I'm looking forward to being out there."Yelich and center fielder Lorenzo Cain, who signed a free agent, were together in the batting order for the first time since April 4.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds' worst start since the Great Depression prompted a quick hook for Bryan Price.Cincinnati fired its fifth-year manager on Thursday because of a 3-15 start, the first managerial change in the major leagues this season. The Reds hadn't changed managers so early in a season since Tony Perez was fired after 44 games in 1993.It's the first time since 2002 that a manager has been fired in April, according to ESPN. Four managers were fired that April, including Phil Garner after an 0-6 start with the Tigers that matched the quickest hook in major league history.Price managed a rebuilding effort that relied on rookies more than any other team in the majors during his tenure. The Reds have lost at least 94 games in each of the last three seasons while finishing last in the NL Central.Although the Reds have been patient with their coaching staff during the rebuild, their worst start since 1931 prompted the change."We felt we had to act now, we couldn't afford to wait," general... ATLANTA (AP) — One-half inch may have been the difference between Freddie Freeman facing another extended stay on the disabled list and remaining in the Atlanta Braves' lineup. The first baseman avoided serious injury when he was hit on his left wrist by a pitch from Philadelphia's Hoby Milner Wednesday night. Freeman said the ball hit one-half inch from where he was hit by a pitch last season, causing a fracture that forced him to miss seven weeks.A CT scan on Thursday confirmed the good news for Freeman. When X-rays taken Wednesday night showed no structural damage, he immediately began lobbying to start in Thursday night's game against the New York Mets. Freeman was cleared to start after taking about 25 swings Thursday.Freeman said he "got lucky" to escape with only some bruising and discomfort."When I was sitting for X-rays last year, I could tell there was something definitely wrong," he said. "It was throbbing and it was aching. Yesterday, it just hurt. There wasn't any throbbing... [More]
