LHP Dario Alvarez was recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Gwinnett, giving the Braves a fresh arm and third lefty in the bullpen. He was claimed off waivers May 25 from the New York Mets. Alvarez had 14 strikeouts in eight innings with Gwinnett after fanning 27 in 15 1/3 innings with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Alvarez, who hasn't been able to pitch since Sept. 15, was thought to be done for the season with a groin injury. However a successful rehab stint with High-A Port St. Lucie seemed to change the mind of the Mets' brass, as the playoff bound team is desperate for a lefty arm out of the bullpen. It's unclear how many innings he will throw with the season nearing an end considering New York will want to preserve his health for the postseason.

Alvarez left Tuesday's game with a groin injury, and it appears the ailment will keep him out for at least the next two weeks. He could be available in the postseason depending on how far the Mets advance, but it's possible the lefty may not pitch again in the majors until 2016.

Alvarez joins a long list of lefty specialists who may be unavailable to the Mets over the rest of the season, as manager Terry Collins did not sound optimistic about Alvarez's injury after Tuesday's game. Alvarez gave up two runs on three hits while recording just one out before exiting Tuesday.

Alvarez threw 1.1 scoreless innings in the Mets' 7-2 win over the Braves on Thursday.

Alvarez relieved Bartolo Colon with one on and two outs and the score 4-2 in the seventh. He retired Nick Markakis to end the frame and all three hitters he faced in the eighth. Hitters are 0-for-5 against Alvarez in the majors this season with four of those batters lefties. It's that success against lefties which could land Alvarez on the post-season roster.

Alvarez is expected to be recalled by the Mets on Friday, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal reports.

Alvarez was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas late in August after a short stint with the Mets that went by without him making an appearance. He'll likely remain with the club the rest of the way, but his outings will probably come in low-leverage situations for the most part.

Although he didn't make any appearances during his two-day stint with the big club, Alvarez is having an excellent season in the minors, with 58 strikeouts over 39.1 innings between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. He could be a useful piece for the bullpen in September and might be ready to compete for a late-inning role next spring.

Alvarez will be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday for bullpen relief, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The Mets still have a decision to make for their corresponding move on whether to put Lucas Duda on the DL or demote rookie Michael Conforto. Alvarez contended for a roster spot in spring training, but ultimately lost his chance due to trades and has since shown strong stuff between Double-A and Triple-A. In 39.1 innings across both levels, the 26-year-old lefty has struck out 13.3 batters per nine innings and registered a 2.75 ERA.

Alvarez went sent down to the minors on Tuesday.

Alvarez's chance of earning a roster spot was lost when the Mets acquired Jerry Blevins and Alex Torres on Monday. He will pitch in relief for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Alvarez struck out the only batter he faced Sunday.

Alvarez and Sean Gilmartin are the only two bullpen lefties left in camp for the Mets. It's possible both come north with the team, though the team is still exploring the trade and post-roster waiver list options to find a lefty for the pen.

Alvarez, trying to earn a role as a lefty specialist in the Mets' pen, failed to record an out in the four batters he faced Thursday. Carlos Torres relieved in and then gave up a grand slam, so Alvarez was charged with four runs.

With Josh Edgin (elbow) possibly lost for the year, Alvarez has a shot to fill the open lefty spot in the bullpen. Outings like today did little to help his chances.
