CF Byron Buxton looks to be finishing strong at the plate for a second straight season in his effort to become more than just a superlative defensive player. He laid down a nice safety squeeze bunt in the second inning to give the Twins a 2-0 lead and singled home the tiebreaking run in the eighth when Minnesota scored twice in a 6-4 win over Detroit. Buxton is hitting .371 over his last 19 games. He finished strong last September but started poorly in 2017.

CF Byron Buxton made a couple of nice defensive plays in center field Saturday night but nothing to match the catch he made Friday night. Buxton did hit a long home run to right-center leading off the fourth inning, giving Minnesota a 6-5 lead at the time, and added a single later on. After making some adjustments to his hitting approach and mechanics, a tough thing to do in mid-year, Buxton is hitting ,379 over his last 17 games.

CF Byron Buxton may be scuffling on offense but his defense hasn't suffered one bit. Buxton ran a long way Friday night to catch a tailing liner to right center by 1B Miguel Cabrera of Detroit in the fourth inning. It saved a double or a triple and possibly a run because 3B Nicholas Castellanos followed with a single. "We watch him every day so we have that privilege," manager Paul Molitor said. "It's just one of those things. It's really hard for me to place value on just how much he's contributed to our team. Even with a year where he's trying to grow offensively. It just brings a presence to our club when we got out on the defensive side that we just can't match with any other kind of personnel out there."

OF Byron Buxton (left groin strain/migraine headaches) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Friday night and led off the game with a home run. Buxton started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a walk. Buxton initially landed on the DL on July 15 with a groin injury. The Twins planned to activate him on Tuesday against the Dodgers, but migraines sidelined him that day and Wednesday. "Originally if we had brought him back on his eligible day on Tuesday, it would have been a 10-day break roughly with a lot of baseball work," Twins manager Paul Molitor said Friday. "As it turned out, he missed a couple of days in L.A. with the migraines. We were looking at two weeks. I thought not only to find out, make sure that leg was good, but that the symptoms of the migraines were behind him that to get out and play for the weekend made sense." Buxton is expected to play two more games for Rochester.
