Sat May 13 202318:51Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Starting Saturday On The Bench
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is absent from the lineup for Saturday's contest against the San Francisco Giants. The 29-year-old has been solid with the bat, batting .310 with five dingers, 23 runs, and 20 RBI over 35 games. Alek Thomas will play in the outfield instead, batting eighth. He's been cold at the dish, running a .198 average with two homers, three steals, and a .589 OPS. Thomas has been much better against right-handers, though, as he's slashing .274/.333/.466, so he may be a productive streaming option for Saturday with right-hander Anthony DeSclafani on the hill.

Wed Apr 12 202314:54Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Re-Enters Starting Lineup Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is back in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Gurriel got the night off last night with Corbin Burnes on the mound for Milwaukee but also because he's scuffled out of the gate with his new club. Acquired from the Blue Jays in an off-season blockbuster, Gurriel is hitting just .205 without a homer alongside a .520 OPS across his first 10 games of the season. He gets a much better matchup against right-hander Janson Junk in Wednesday afternoon's contest at Chase Field in Arizona.

Sun Apr 9 202313:35Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Absent From The Lineup On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks infielder/outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gurriel Jr. is coming off a three-hit, three RBI performance in Saturday's contest against Los Angeles but he's getting the day off on Sunday. The recently recalled Pavin Smith is starting at designated hitter and batting third as the D-Backs look to sweep the Dodgers.

Wed Mar 29 202311:38Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Plays First Base Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got the start at first base in the Cactus League finale against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday and went 0-for-1 with a walk and a strikeout in the 3-1 win. Between the outfield and designated hitter, Gurriel should find himself in Arizona's lineup on a regular basis, and he'll also be the backup at first base behind Christian Walker. The 29-year-old lost some fantasy appeal with the move from Toronto to Arizona in an offseason trade after he hit .291/.343/.400 with a .743 OPS, five home runs, 52 RBI and 52 runs in 121 games for the Blue Jays in 2022. Wrist issues likely contributed to his big drop in power a year ago, so if he shows better health, he could rebound in a nice way as a fantasy value selection.

Fri Dec 23 202217:18Gabriel Moreno, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Heading To Arizona
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired catching prospect Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho, according to sources. Moreno is a consensus top-10 prospect in all of baseball, and he has elite bat-to-ball skills and a huge arm as a defender. The 22-year-old backstop has All-Star potential in his future. He made his big-league debut in 2022 and hit a strong .319/.356/.377 in just 73 plate appearances. Moreno will split time with Carson Kelly in Arizona, but he should become Arizona's primary catcher sooner than later. Gurriel, 29, dealt with a wrist injury that sapped his power (five home runs in 2022), but he could bounce back with better health in 2023. He should be a regular for Arizona moving forward, but the move to the National League West club is a downgrade from a fantasy perspective.

Thu Oct 20 202219:00Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Has Wrist Surgery
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (wrist) dealt with left wrist issues this year and underwent successful surgery on the wrist on Thursday with Dr. Graham in Ohio. Gurriel is expected to be ready for spring training next year. The 29-year-old Cuban outfielder missed the final month of the season due to a left hamstring strain and was left off the roster for the Wild-Card Series loss to the Seattle Mariners. Gurriel finished his 2022 season by hitting a strong .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, 52 RBI, 52 runs scored and three stolen bases in 493 plate appearances over 121 games. His five homers were the fewest in his fifth major league season, but perhaps his lingering wrist issue was to blame for the lack of pop.

Fri Oct 7 202214:06Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Not On Wild-Card Roster
The Toronto Blue Jays left outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) off their roster for the Wild-Card Series against the Seattle Mariners this weekend. Gurriel isn't healthy enough to play in the first round of the playoffs for the Jays. In Gurriel's place, the team decided to carry an extra catcher in Gabriel Moreno. It remains to be seen if Gurriel will be ready to return for the AL Division Series against the Houston Astros if they advance past the Mariners. Gurriel hasn't played for Toronto since Sept. 7, and he finished the 2022 regular season hitting .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, 52 RBI, 52 runs scored and three stolen bases in his 453 at-bats.

Wed Sep 28 202218:35Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Hasn't Resumed Running Bases
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) still hasn't run the bases, but the team is hoping he can do that on Friday. Infielder Santiago Espinal (oblique) is a little behind Gurriel in his rehab progression. He has just started baseball activities and is just hitting off a tee. If he doesn't have any setbacks on Friday, there's a chance he could still appear in one of the final games of the regular season. However, fantasy managers with a title still on the line shouldn't be expecting much, if anything. The 28-year-old Cuban slugger has been great this year for Toronto in his 453 at-bats, hitting .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, 52 RBI, 52 runs scored and three stolen bases. The Blue Jays will be hoping that he's fully healthy by the time the playoffs start.

Fri Sep 9 202218:10Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Headed To Injured List
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day IL on Friday, retroactive to September 8. Gurriel was injured while hustling out a potential double play ball, as he landed on the bag awkwardly and went down in a heap. The team has chosen to put him on the injured list after Gurriel went for an MRI Thursday, which gives them an extra roster spot in a crucial part of their season. Hopefully the IL stint is a short one, but no timeline has been given. After a scorching June and July, Gurriel slumped hard in August, slashing just .225/.269/.304. It's certainly worth considering dropping Gurriel if you don't have any extra IL spots for him, as he likely won't see the field at all next week. Expect Raimel Tapia, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Whit Merrifield to see more time in the outfield with Gurriel on the IL.

Thu Sep 8 202211:07Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Going For MRI
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) is going for an MRI exam on Thursday after he left Wednesday's game early against the Baltimore Orioles with what the team described as left hamstring discomfort. Gurriel landed awkwardly at first base while trying to beat out an infield ground ball. Toronto will view his MRI results on Thursday before determining his next steps. Fantasy managers should be prepared for a potential stint on the injured list. The good news is the Blue Jays are off on Thursday, but the 28-year-old could very well be out on Friday for the series opener against the Texas Rangers. Gurriel is hitting a strong .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, 52 RBI, 52 runs scored and three steals in 453 at-bats in 2022.

Wed Sep 7 202222:45Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Exits With Hamstring Discomfort
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) was diagnosed with left hamstring discomfort after exiting Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. He sustained the hamstring injury trying to beat out a double-play ground ball during the second inning. He went 0-for-1 with an RBI before exiting. Gurriel is considered day-to-day, with his next chance to return to the lineup will be Friday against the Texas Rangers. Whit Merrifield and Bradley Zimmer would see an uptick in playing time if Gurriel is forced to miss any games.

Fri Sep 2 202218:18Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Sitting Out Friday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (wrist) is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Gurriel is being held out of the lineup to heal a "bothersome wrist issue", but it doesn't sound like a serious concern. After a scorching hot June and July, the 28-year-old went on a bit of a cold streak in August, slashing just .225/.269/.304 with no homers. The lack of power is a big concern for Gurriel this season, as he's knocked only five blasts in 2022. He probably shouldn't be starting in many fantasy lineups right now, unless it is a deep league or his owner needs help in the batting average category.

Sat Aug 20 202212:30Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Retreats To The Bench
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the New York Yankees. Gurriel has been in a bit of a mini slump of late, but he's still hitting a healthy .302/.354/.411 with five home runs, 49 RBI, 49 runs scored and three stolen bases on the season in 433 plate appearances over 107 games played for Toronto. It looks to be just a normal day of rest for the 28-year-old Cuban slugger. Raimel Tapia is taking over in left field and will hit leadoff on Saturday against Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole. The leadoff spot will make Tapia more appealing in DFS, but he has very little pop and has gone 5-for-24 (.208) with no homers, one RBI and no runs scored in nine games in the last two weeks.

Wed Jul 27 202216:12Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Getting A Breather On Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is absent from the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against right-hander Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals. Raimel Tapia will be handling left field duties for the contest. Gurriel has been fantastic at the plate over the course of July. He owns a .408/.444/.513 slash line across the month, which has helped lift his season-long slash line to .313/.362/.433. We're still waiting to see the home runs come in as he has just five homers across 88 games on the year. He has a peculiarly low 5.4% HR/FB rate (down from 15.3% last year), despite the fact that he's improved upon both his launch angle and hard-hit rate from last year. There's a good chance we could see some positive home run regression for Gurriel over the final months of the year.

Tue Jul 5 202218:46Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Retreats To The Bench On Tuesday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not included in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Oakland Athletics. Raimel Tapia will be covering Gurriel's usual left field post for the game. Gurriel got off to a slow start to the season, but he's really turned a corner over the past month or so. He's currently in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak, during which he's compiled four doubles, one home run, two RBI and seven runs. His .355/.394/.505 slash line in June helped lift his season-long slash line to .295/.350/.433.

Tue May 24 202218:44Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Back To The Bench On Tuesday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will be on the bench for Tuesday's game against right-hander Jordan Hicks and the St. Louis Cardinals. Raimel Tapia is getting the start in left field and batting ninth in the game. Gurriel seems to be falling out of favor due to his early struggles. He was on the bench Sunday, then he batted eighth in Monday's game and now he's sitting for the second time in three games. Over 39 games on the year, the 28-year-old is slashing .225/.273/.326 with two home runs, 12 RBI and 13 runs.

Fri May 20 202216:26Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Out With Hamstring Soreness Friday
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) exited Wednesday's game against the Seattle Mariners with hamstring soreness and the injury is still nagging him. While he isn't expected to require a trip to the injured list, he is being held out of the starting lineup on Friday. Raimel Tapia will be getting the start in left field and batting sixth in the game. Gurriel has yet to settle in at the plate this year. Over 37 games, he's slashing .227/.273/.333 with two home runs, 12 RBI and 13 runs. He should be considered day-to-day for now.
