Lions LG Rob Sims hopes to sign a contract extension this season.
Sims, 30, is set to make $2.2 million in the final year of his contract. He struggled to play above replacement level last season, grading out negatively in run-blocking by Pro Football Focus. Sims wants to finish his career in Detroit and could be open to a team-friendly deal.

Sat May 19 201215:39Rob Sims where he wants to be with weight
Lions LG Rob Sims says he's "right where (he wants) to be" with his weight after gaining 15 pounds.
Sims admits the weight gain will sap his quickness. "Of course I'm a lot quicker at 290 pounds, but I need a happy medium between being as quick as I can be and being as strong as I can be," he said. "I am right where I want to be." The Lions were apparently on board with Sims bulking up, but more in the range of 5-10 pounds than 15-20. Sims played near 300 in 2011, and will likely tip the scales in the vicinity of 310 this season.

Thu May 10 201217:49Rob Sims shows up 20 pounds overweight
Lions LG Rob Sims showed up to the team's offseason program 20 pounds heavier than he was last season.
Lions OL coach George Yarno insists the weight gain was on purpose. "He wanted to just be a little firmer in the run and the pass," Yarno said. "He was right at 300 (last year), and I think he wants to be in the 315-320 range to have more mass in order to get movement in the run game." Yarno did admit Sims has "got to get in shape," and is "not ready to play a game right now."

Fri Oct 8 201013:34Lions sign Rob Sims to four-year extension
Lions signed LG Rob Sims to a four-year extension through 2014.
Left tackle Jeff Backus' pass-blocking whiffs have sidelined Matt Stafford for a second straight year, but Sims isn't to blame. He's solidified a longtime trouble spot at left guard in Detroit with consistent performance both on the ground and when the Lions have gone to pass. The 26-year-old was a value pickup in the offseason. The Lions got him for a fifth-round pick.

Mon Apr 5 201012:53Another trade: Seahawks swing Sims to Lions
Lions acquired OG Rob Sims from the Seahawks in exchange for undisclosed compensation.
Sims, 26, will likely move into the Lions' starting lineup immediately at left guard. Though somewhat injury prone, Sims has racked up 31 starts over the last three seasons and is a low-risk acquisition because he's only under contract through 2010 at a mere $1.101 million. 2009 LGs Manuel Ramirez and Daniel Loper may now be left fighting for one roster spot in Detroit.
