John Fox was happy with the play of WLB Jason Williams in his first start.
"A young player learning a new defense," Fox said. "I thought he did some good things. He made a nice play on the caused fumble, fumble recovery. I think, like new guys, he will get better and better. He made some plays in the kicking game as well as on defense." Williams was a poor fit in Dallas' 3-4 defense, but he could have some upside in Carolina's 4-3. The physical tools are there.

Tue Nov 2 201015:29Cowboys release 2009 3rd-rounder Williams
Cowboys waived LB Jason Williams.
A third-rounder and the highest pick in Dallas' disappointing 2009 draft class, Williams totaled three defensive tackles and eight special teams tackles over 10 games. The Cowboys have struggled to find a capable nickel linebacker this season, and Williams was the worst of the bunch in coverage. He wasn't much better on special teams.
Thu Jul 29 201021:57Cowboys ILB Williams lost in coverage
Jason Williams, a candidate for the Cowboys nickel linebacker job, has been getting lost in coverage early in training camp.
Williams has been found "trailing tight ends or running backs by a couple of steps in pass coverage," struggling to identify routes. Even though he's been out with a strained quad, rookie Sean Lee seems likely to win this nickel linebacker battle.

Mon May 17 201013:13Jason Williams runs with Cowboys' ones
With Keith Brooking (knee surgery) out, Jason Williams is running as Dallas' first-team inside linebacker next to Bradie James at OTAs.
Rookie Sean Lee is apparently with the twos. Williams was a third-round pick in 2009 and offers explosiveness up the middle, so Lee is far from a shoe-in to beat him out. Brooking's status for the start of training camp is unknown.

Thu May 13 201009:06Williams, Lee to get shot at nickel job
Jason Williams and Sean Lee will get the first shot at replacing Bobby Carpenter as the nickel linebacker.
Coach Wade Phillips added that starters Keith Brooking or Bradie James could be used in that role also. Carpenter had just 46 tackles and two sacks a year ago, so it will be hard to do much worse. Lee is likely more NFL-ready than Williams right now even though Lee is a rookie.
