Signed last October, Benard went on to appear in 12 games, racking up 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The former Brown's career was derailed by an October 2011 motorcycle accident, but he's finally back to full health. Benard can rush the passer and has a good chance of cracking the 53-man roster.

Fri Aug 30 201313:47Pats release DE Marcus Benard
Patriots released DE Marcus Benard.
Benard displayed some legit pass-rushing juice for the Browns in 2010, but hasn't played since his October 2011 motorcycle accident. It's possible he'll never be the same. Benard will presumably get some workouts this season, but that might be it.

Sat Jul 6 201320:45Marcus Benard not likely to make final roster
ESPN Boston doesn't expect DE Marcus Benard to make the Patriots' roster.
Signed to a reserve/future contract this offseason, Benard spent the first six games of 2012 on the NFI list before he was released by the Browns. A productive player from 2009-2010, it would take a strong training camp for him to see playing time in a crowded defensive end rotation. He's behind Jermaine Cunningham, Justin Francis and Jake Bequette for a roster spot.

Mon Jan 21 201316:22Patriots sign DE Marcus Benard
Patriots signed DE Marcus Benard to a reserve/future contract.
Benard is now 15 months removed from the motorcycle accident that left him with multiple minor injuries, but he failed to land a contract after being released with an injury settlement by the Browns in October. A situational pass rusher, Benard should get a legitimate chance to make himself a part of the Patriots' D-line rotation in 2013, but he's still a long shot for a roster spot. Benard has 12 sacks in 25 career games.

Benard has garnered quite a bit of interest since being released by the Browns with an injury settlement earlier in the month. Arizona had Benard in at their facility last week. Oakland signed Andre Carter a few weeks ago to try and jump start their pass rush, but the defense still sits near the bottom of the league with just seven sacks.

Wed Oct 17 201219:51Arizona tried out free agent DE Benard
The Cardinals tried out free agent DE Marcus Benard.
Benard was released with an injury settlement by the Browns last week. He dislocated his elbow in the preseason. Thanks to injuries suffered in an October 2011 motorcycle accident, Benard hasn't appeared in a regular season game in over a year, but is still only two seasons removed from leading the Browns in sacks. He should latch on somewhere before season's end.

Sat Aug 25 201211:48Browns DE Benard may have 'major' injury
Browns DE Marcus Benard may have suffered a "major" elbow injury in Friday's preseason loss to the Eagles.
The Browns refused comment after the game, but it sounds like Benard's Week 1 status is very much in doubt. A situational pass rusher, Benard was limited to four games last season thanks to injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident. The Browns likely won't hesitate to place him on injured reserve.

Browns DE Marcus Benard (broken hand) participated in the start of the team's offseason program on Monday.
Coach Pat Shurmur said Benard is "doing well" after missing all but four games last season following a motorcycle accident. Benard can be an effective situational pass rusher and should have an opportunity to earn a job in Cleveland's nickel defense this year. The Browns are short on natural edge rushers.

Sun Mar 25 201212:41Marcus Benard expected to be ready for OTAs
Browns DE Marcus Benard (broken hand) is expected to participate in OTAs.
Benard is almost back to full health after sustaining multiple minor injuries in an October motorcycle accident that landed him on the non-football injury list. Just two years removed from notching eight sacks as a nickel rusher, Benard should earn a roster spot as long as he's healthy.

Thu Mar 8 201211:22Marcus Benard under contract with Browns
Updating previous items, Browns DE Marcus Benard is under contract with the team in 2012.
Browns GM Tom Heckert revealed Thursday that Benard's 2011 salary was "tolled" to 2012 because he spent the majority of last season on the reserve/non-football injury list. A promising nickel rusher in 2009 and 2010, Benard might have generated a better market than expected. He had 11 sacks in his first two seasons. Benard should not struggle for sub-package playing time in 2012.

Sat Feb 25 201213:24Report: Browns want to keep Benard
A league source tells the Akron Beacon-Journal the Browns will attempt to re-sign restricted free agent DE Marcus Benard even if he is non-tendered.
Yahoo Sports reported Saturday Benard will be non-tendered, but it's entirely possible the Browns would like to bring him back on a non-guaranteed, incentive-laden deal. Benard is just two years removed from an eight-sack season, and is expected to make a full recovery from the October motorcycle accident that limited him to four games in 2011.
