The Steelers have released Keisel (triceps), the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The 36-year-old defensive end saw action in 12 games, starting four, for the Steelers last season before sustaining a season-ending triceps tear in Week 13. ESPN.com notes that Keisel indicated last month that he was working his way back from the triceps injury and was open to playing this coming season, though it's unclear how much interest he'll garner in free agency.

Before the injury, Keisel had recorded 17 tackles including a sack and one interception.

The Steelers added defensive end Clifton Geathers to their roster to take his spot, with Keisel's 2014 campaign thus concluding with 17 tackles and a sack in 12 games.

If an MRI confirms the injury, Keisel will miss the rest of this season. Already 36 years old, he might also consider retirement. He'll likely finish his season with 17 tackles (eight solo), a sack, an interception, and five passes defensed. The Steelers will likely need more snaps from fellow defensive ends Cam Thomas and Stephon Tuitt.

Keisel had two tackles (one solo) including a sack in Pittsburgh's 20-13 loss to the Jets on Sunday.

The sack was the first of the season for Keisel. The Steelers' defense has looked solid the past few weeks, and should do well in Week 10 against Tennessee and their 31st ranked offense.

Keisel failed to record a tackle but did have an interception in the Steelers' 30-23 win against Houston on Monday night.

The pick was only Keisel's second since joining the league in 2002, but came at critical point in the game deep in Houston territory. Ben Roethlisberger then connected with Le'Veon Bell for a touchdown on the very next play, giving the Steelers a 24-13 lead, and Houston was never able to recover from the huge momentum shift.

Keisel will suit up for Thursday's preseason game in Philadelphia, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

After re-upping with the Steelers on Tuesday, Keisel's eventual workload will likely be capped in order to ease him into the fold. However, expect him to record some reps Thursday along the defensive front, where he should start at defensive end once the regular season kicks off.

The Cardinals were said to be making a push for Keisel after losing Darnell Dockett to a season-ending knee injury a day earlier, but the longtime Steeler will once again be donning the black and gold. Keisel started all 12 games he was active for last season, racking up 29 total tackles and four sacks. Given his experience in Dick LeBeau's 3-4, there's a good chance he'll beat out Cam Thomas to earn one of the starting roles at defensive end.

Keisel declined his invitation to visit the Cardinals on Tuesday, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports.

Keisel was considering joining the Cardinals, who are looking for defensive end help with Darnell Dockett (knee) out for the season, but he has decided to pass for family reasons. Keisel could still join a team at some point this season if the situation is right or him.

The Steelers haven't ruled out re-signing free agents Brett Keisel and James Harrison.

Specifically, GM Kevin Colbert said the team hasn't ruled out signing "anybody." Keisel, who turns 36 in September, has made no-known visits since hitting the open market in March. He'd be an option behind LE Cam Thomas in Pittsburgh.

Beat writer Ed Bouchette believes "it makes just too much sense for [Keisel] not to rejoin the Steelers." The soon-to-be 36-year-old wouldn't be asked to play a full complement of snaps should be be re-signed, but Keisel could help mentor rookie DE Stephon Tuitt and the other young defensive linemen on the Steelers.

ESPN's Scott Brown believes the Steelers could be waiting until after June 1 to re-sign free agent Brett Keisel.

Keisel hasn't received any free-agent interest to this point, but remains committed to playing this season. He could be used in a rotation opposite Cameron Heyward, with rookie Stephon Tuitt, Cam Thomas, and Nick Williams also in the mix for snaps. The Steelers currently have just $357,896 in cap space, but will be getting back $2.41 million next month from releasing LaMarr Woodley.

Keisel registered 29 tackles and four sacks across 12 games this past season.

The Steelers are not expected to retain longtime RE Brett Keisel or FS Ryan Clark.

Both are free agents. The Steelers need a facelift on a defense that has gotten too old, and 35-year-old Keisel is no longer the answer at right end. After managing four sacks in a dozen 2013 appearances, Keisel may not generate interest as a starter in free agency. Clark is 34 and also clearly in decline.
