After hauling in a game-high eight receptions for 60 yards Saturday in New Orleans, Gibson sustained a knee injury in the latter stages of the game. He was seen favoring the knee in the locker room afterward, spurring fears of a severe concern, but it's in fact of the season-ending variety. The road to the 53-man roster has been made easier for Aaron Dobson (hamstring), at the very least.

While more information hasn't been released as of yet, this setback could hurt Gibson's chance at earning a roster spot. With Julian Edelman (undisclosed), Brandon LaFell (foot), Aaron Dobson (hamstring) and Brian Tyms (foot) all suffering from injuries to begin the preseason, it looked as if Gibson might earn his way onto the roster with a strong performance in the preseason, and he still could as long as initial tests prove to be positive.

With Brandon LaFell, Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson and Brian Tyms sidelined Thursday, Gibson certainly helped his chances of making the team by hauling in all of his targets. With Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell and Danny Amendola entrenched as the Patriots' top three wideouts, Gibson is battling with Dobson, Tyms and Josh Boyce for the team's No. 4 and 5 receiver spots.

The Patriots have signed Gibson to a one-year deal worth $825,000, ESPN's Field Yates reports.

Gibson isn't a splashy addition to the Patriots' offense, but he'll bolster the team's wideout depth at an affordable rate. The 27-year-old is coming off a season in which he caught 29 passes for 295 yards and a TD in 14 games for the Dolphins.

He may need to compete for a roster spot in training camp, depending on where he lands. The Dolphins are purging their roster of the players they unwisely overpaid in past seasons.

Gibson finished the 2014 season with 29 receptions for 295 yards and a touchdown.

Gibson had 51 targets on the season but is not better than fourth or fifth on the progression list for quarterback Ryan Tannehill. He could be on the roster bubble once again going into next season.

Gibson had five receptions for 42 yards in Miami's loss to Denver on Sunday.

Gibson caught five of six targets but most were for short gains and he was also lucky as he fumbled on two of those catches but the Dolphins were able to retain possession as the ball went out of bounds.
