Cofield, a free agent, is still recovering from offseason surgeries on his groin and abdomen, but he should be ready in four-to-six weeks, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.
Assuming he eventually checks out physically, the 31-year-old Cofield should draw interest from teams that have their d-line rotations depleted in August and September. He's never topped 54 tackles or four sacks in a single season, but he was a significant contributor to each of his teams before 2014.
Fri Feb 27 201513:58Barry Cofield: Released By Redskins
Cofield was released by the Redskins on Friday, ESPN's John Keim reports.
It probably wasn't much of a decision, as the transaction saves Washington approximately $4.1 million against the 2015 cap. Soon to be 31 years old, Cofield should catch on elsewhere, if he doesn't agree to a smaller contract with the Redskins. He has never topped 54 tackles or four sacks in a single season.

Cofield suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday's Week 1 loss and is expected to miss at least three weeks, NFL.com reports.
Cofield was forced out of Sunday's game during the second quarter and will now have his streak of 80 consecutive starts snapped due to an ankle injury. With Cofield out for the next few weeks, Chris Baker could see increased playing time at nose tackle, moving Kedric Golston up the depth chart at left defensive end.

Sat May 31 201414:03Cofield says he'll be ready for training camp
Redskins NT Barry Cofield (sports hernia) said he will "for sure" be ready when Washington opens training camp in late July.
The recovery time for sports-hernia surgery is typically 1-2 months, leaving Cofield with plenty of time to get ready for camp. Cofield is a plus pass rusher that has struggled against the run throughout his career, which makes him better suited to play defensive end Washington's 3-4 scheme. The Redskins played him at nose last season, however, and it looks like that will be his position in 2014 as well.

Wed May 28 201416:56Redskins NT Cofield had sports hernia surgery
Redskins NT Barry Cofield is sitting out OTAs after undergoing sports-hernia surgery earlier this offseason.
Recovery time is typically 1-2 months, so Cofield should be ready in plenty of time for training camp. Cofield was a top-five pass-rushing defensive tackle over at Pro Football Focus last season but struggled badly against the run, grading out in the bottom eight. He's missed just one game and two starts in eight seasons. Cofield will be flanked by DEs Jason Hatcher and Jarvis Jenkins in 2014.

Mon Sep 2 201319:50Redskins NT Cofield restructures contract
Redskins NT Barry Cofield restructured his contract, clearing roughly $2.4 million in 2013 salary cap space.
Cofield agreed to trim his base salary from $4.05 million to $840,000, turning the difference into a "signing" bonus. The 29-year-old is signed through 2016. Cofield broke his right hand this preseason but will be ready Week 1.

Mon Aug 19 201322:39Report: Redskins NT Cofield breaks hand
Redskins NT Barry Cofield suffered a broken right hand in Monday night's preseason game against the Steelers.
The Redkskins have been ravaged by injuries in their second preseason game. We haven't had a blurb on Cofield in over two calendar years, but he graded out as a top-ten pass rusher in Pro Football Focus' 2012 end-of-year rankings. Since signing with the Redskins prior to 2011, Cofield has 5.5 sacks and has started all 32 games. He might be able to put a club-like cast on his hand and give it a go early in the regular season, but Cofield's done for the preseason.

Wed Jul 27 201121:57Redskins haven't decided on Cofield position
The Redskins have not yet decided whether to use Barry Cofield at defensive end or nose tackle.
They'll sort it out on the training camp practice field. Cofield, who signed a six-year, $36 million blockbuster late Tuesday night, was a nose tackle in the Giants' 4-3. At 6'4/306 he's built more like a defensive end for Washington's 3-4 scheme, but it isn't like the Redskins have better options inside. We still have the expectation that Cofield will be a "0-technique" nose.

Wed Jul 27 201100:31Redskins reach six-year deal with NT Cofield
Redskins agreed to terms with DT Barry Cofield on a six-year contract.
The Redskins were fully expected to pursue Cofield, who will presumably replace Ma'ake Kemoeatu as the starting nose tackle in Jim Haslett's 3-4 scheme. Cofield bounced back nicely in 2011, grading out as a top-12 tackle in Pro Football Focus' ratings. Mike Shanahan's club is still expected to battle the Cowboys for free agent DE Cullen Jenkins this week.

Sun Jul 3 201115:17Giants won't put up a fight to keep Cofield
The Giants are not expected to "put up a big fight" to keep free agent NT Barry Cofield.
Cofield has acknowledged as much himself several times over the past couple of months. The Giants have refused to extend his contract, opting instead to draft Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin. Cofield could end up following coach Steve Spagnuolo and DT Fred Robbins to St. Louis.

Wed Jun 29 201110:11Cofield fully recovered from shoulder surgery
Free agent NT Barry Cofield insists he's completely recovered from early January shoulder surgery.
Cofield's preference is to return to the Big Apple, but he believe he'll be "pushed to the end of the line" with other key Giants hitting the market. A bargain for five years, Cofield will instead cash in elsewhere. The Rams are considered the favorite for his services.

Wed May 18 201121:10Barry Cofield: Preference is to stay w/ G-Men
Free agent NT Barry Cofield says his preference is to re-sign and finish his career with the Giants, but he sees the writing on the wall.
Cofield is a good player, but the G-Men won't pay him after using back-to-back second-round picks on defensive tackles Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin. "It definitely does make you think that maybe they are preparing for life without me," he said. "And if that is the case, then so be it." Cofield is expected to draw interest from the Rams if he hits unrestricted free agency.

Sun May 15 201111:01Rams may be eyeing Cofield
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch thinks the Rams could have strong interest in free agent NT Barry Cofield if he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Rams HC Steve Spagnuolo was Cofield's defensive coordinator his first three seasons in the NFL, and St. Louis has a need at defensive tackle. Cofield is adamant that he will not play under a one-year tender for the second consecutive season if he is made a restricted free agent, and is likely done in New York, regardless, after the Giants took Marvin Austin on day two of the draft.

Thu Mar 31 201120:02Giants NT Cofield considering trade request
Giants NT Barry Cofield will consider requesting a trade if five-year veterans end up as restricted free agents again this year.
It would only happen if the league reverts to last year's rules in lieu of a new CBA that would free all players with four or more years of service time. Cofield wants a long-term deal instead of playing on another one-year tender. The Giants had a deal worked out with the Saints last year, but Cofield rejected New Orleans' contract offer.

Thu Mar 10 201109:17Cofield says range of motion is 'great'
Free agent NT Barry Cofield says his range of motion after shoulder surgery is "great," and anticipates being 100 percent by summer.
Cofield is working out at TEST to rehab the shoulder. The surgery was his fourth that we've confirmed -- Cofield has three previous knee operations, including two in the 2010 offseason including one microfracture. Though Cofield has been durable on the field, the wear and tear on his body could limit his market value. He is still pretty young, though, turning 27 next week.
