Mathews rushed eight times for 73 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes on three targets for 23 yards Sunday against the Saints.
DeMarco Murray led the backfield by rushing 20 times for 83 yards and a score, while also catching seven passes on eight targets for 37 receiving yards, but Mathews was still able to grab two-yard touchdown. Mathews' usage continues to be relatively limited because of Murray, and while he could get a few goal-line touches here and there, his upside isn't nearly as high as it was when Murray was out.

Mathews gained 20 yards on five carries in Sunday's loss to Washington. He lost a fumble for the second straight week and was not targeted in the passing game.
A week after racking up 128 yards and a touchdown while deputizing for the injured DeMarco Murray, Mathews returned to a reserve role Sunday and was only sparingly involved in the offense. The 27-year-old's case was not helped by the fact that the Eagles ran the ball just 18 times while playing from behind, but Mathews will seemingly not see a heavy workload for as long as Murray is healthy. Week 5 brings with it a favorable home matchup against the struggling Saints.

Mathews rushed 25 times for 108 yards and caught two passes on four targets for 20 receiving yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Jets, though he lost a fumble.
Starting in place of the injured DeMarco Murray (hamstring), Mathews had a lot of success against a Jets defense that had been very stingy this season, particularly against the run. His 23-yard receiving touchdown was on a one-on-one with linebacker Demario Davis, who had no shot at stopping the running back. Backup Darren Sproles scored on a short-yardage situation, but Mathews is likely to get more of those touches if Murray has to miss any more time. Murray was questionable for the game and originally expected to play, but he apparently wasn't able to do enough in pregame warmups to warrant playing. If he has to continue sitting, Mathews will start Week 4 against the Redskins.

Mathews will start Sunday against the Jets in place of LeSean McCoy, who is inactive with a hamstring injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
McCoy was expected to play despite being listed as questionable, but he wasn't able to show enough on Sunday to warrant active status. Mathews will certainly see more touches, though the Jets boast one of the better run-stopping defensive units in the NFL.

Mathews had just one carry in Sunday's 20-10 loss to Dallas.
Meanwhile, starter DeMarco Murray struggled to get anything going on the ground, rushing for just two yards on 13 carries. Murray was heavily involved as a pass catcher Sunday though, grabbing five passes for 53 yards. One would assume that the Eagles' offense will get on track soon, but for now it's hard to trust anyone, especially one that isn't seeing the ball much.

Mathews rushed three times for four yards and a touchdown, and caught three passes (on four targets) for 24 yards in Monday night's loss to the Falcons.
Mathews' six total touches trailed fellow tailbacks DeMarco Murray (12) and Darren Sproles (12) on Monday, but Mathews did well for himself by scoring a goal line carry during the second half. While Murray and Sproles figure to cap his upside moving forward, Mathews can at least benefit from the Eagles offense's penchant for rotating players, creating opportunity for him to earn more touches by getting the hot hand.

Mathews rushed seven times for 22 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards in Saturday's 39-26 win over the Packers.
Mathews has looked like a sturdy backup option for the Eagles, and has seen his fair share of touches in head coach Chip Kelly's equal-opportunity offense. He won't be the team's leading rusher, but fantasy owners interested in finding a running back flying under the radar could look at Mathews as a player who will see more action than a typical backup running back. Mathews won't play too much in the Eagles' fourth and final preseason game, but he's already proven that he's taking well to Kelly's offensive scheme.

Mathews carried the ball three times for 19 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 40-17 win over the Ravens.
Mathews' first touchdown as an Eagle came with little resistance, as he hit a hole and sprinted 14 yards for a largely-unscathed score. During the first drive, Mathews looked to fit the mold head coach Chip Kelly wants in his running backs: one-cut runners. With versatility the new name of the game in Philadelphia's offense, fantasy owners shouldn't be scared away by Mathews' designation as the Eagles' No. 2 running back. He's not a viable starting option, but he'll see his fair share of touches this season, and he looks healthy enough to produce solid numbers.

Mathews carried twice for 18 yards in Sunday's preseason opener against the Colts.
As the regular season approaches, Mathews slots in behind the Eagles' top back, DeMarco Murray, but it's an assignment that should land Mathews his share of complementary work in any case, and one that also puts him a Murray injury away from a chance to make a major fantasy splash in the Eagles' offense.
Thu Mar 12 201517:15Ryan Mathews: Joining D. Murray In Philly
Mathews signed a three-year contract with the Eagles on Thursday, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports.
Mathews was left in limbo while the Eagles turned their attention to DeMarco Murray, but the team ultimately reached agreements with both veteran running backs. While there should be a lot of carries available in the Philadelphia offense, Murray figures to handle the lion's share of the workload, though there's obvious concern about how he'll hold up in the wake of a very busy 2014 season. With both Murray and Darren Sproles more adept than Mathews in the passing game, the former Charger will likely have some barren performances when the Eagles are forced to play from behind. On a more encouraging note, Mathews will be just one DeMarco Murray injury away from operating as the lead back in a fast-paced offense with a strong offensive line.
Thu Mar 12 201509:39Mathews has yet to officially sign three-year deal with Eagles
Mathews has yet to officially sign his three-year deal with the Eagles, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
What was thought to be a done deal Wednesday is apparently not official, as the two sides merely had agreed in principle to a three-year, $11.5 million contract. Mathews has yet to actually sign his contract, leaving the door open for an unexpected snag. Per Schefter, fellow free agent DeMarco Murray plans to visit the Eagles on Thursday, and if a deal is agreed upon, it could throw a wrench in the Mathews agreement.
Wed Mar 11 201514:25Ryan Mathews: Signs With Eagles
Mathews has signed a three-year, $11.5 million deal with the Eagles that includes $5 million in guaranteed money, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
After being spurned by Frank Gore earlier this week, the Eagles turn to Mathews to fill the void created by the team's trade of LeSean McCoy to the Bills. The 27-year-old Mathews is coming off a season in which injuries limited him to 74 carries for 330 yards and three TDs in six games for the Chargers. When healthy, however, he has been productive and in the context of the Eagles' offense, while working in tandem with pass-catching back Darren Sproles and possibly Chris Polk to a lesser degree, Mathews will have an opportunity to put up fantasy-worthy numbers, as long as he can stay on the field.
Wed Mar 11 201510:15Ryan Mathews: Expected to Land in Philly
Mathews is visiting with the Eagles on Wednesday and is expected to sign a contract, Philadelphia Magazine reports.
With LeSean McCoy traded away to Buffalo and Frank Gore backing out of his commitment with the team to sign with Indianapolis, the Eagles seem to have finally settled on a lead running back. While both Darren Sproles and Chris Polk both figure to remain relevant in the Eagles' running attack, Mathews' ideal blend of size (6-foot, 220 pounds) and speed (4.45 40 time at the 2010 NFL Combine) seemingly make him a good fit for coach Chip Kelly's fast-paced offense. Unfortunately for Mathews, injuries remain a constant worry, as he's played 16 games just once in his five NFL seasons. Those durability concerns will once again make him a high-risk, high-upside fantasy selection again in 2015.

An early MCL sprain and a late ankle injury limited Mathews to only six games in 2014, and he finished the year with 74 carries for 330 yards and three touchdowns to go along with nine receptions for 69 yards.
After a solid 2013 season which saw Mathews healthy for a full 16-game slate for the first time in his career, there was reason for optimism heading into 2014, but injuries once again reared their ugly head. The 10 games he missed this year were a career high, and even worse, he was not very effective when he was on the field. With the exception of a Week 12 game against Rams in which he ran 12 times for 105 yards and a touchdown, Mathews struggled. He averaged just 45 yards per game and 3.6 YPC in the other five contests. Mathews is an unrestricted free agent heading into 2015, so it will be very interesting to see what happens next for the former first-round draft pick who was supposed to be the heir apparent to LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego.
Fri Dec 26 201415:05Mathews (ankle) ruled out for Sunday's game against Chiefs
Mathews (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, the Chargers' official site reports.
With Mathews ruled out, the stage is set for the Chargers to continue to roll with a backfield committee led by Branden Oliver, with Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown also in the mix to a lesser degree.

Mathews (ankle) was listed as a non-participant on Thursday's estimated practice report, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
At this stage, Mathews looks pretty iffy for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, and if he is forced to miss Week 17's contest, the Chargers would once again roll with a backfield committee led by Branden Oliver, along with Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown to a lesser extent.
Wed Dec 24 201415:40Mathews (ankle) not at Wednesday's practice
Mathews (ankle) was not at Wednesday's practice, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Per the report, it seems unlikely that Mathews will be available for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, a scenario that would set the stage for the Chargers to once again roll with a backfield committee led by Branden Oliver, with Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown also in the mix.
Tue Dec 23 201414:34Mathews (ankle) did not practice Tuesday
Mathews (ankle) did not practice Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Mathews hasn't played since Dec. 7 against New England, but the team stated Monday that a return for Week 17 is a "possibility." His absence Tuesday is not overly encouraging, though a final call likely won't be made until later in the week.

Coach Mike McCoy indicated Monday that there is a "possibility" that Mathews (ankle) could play Sunday against the Chiefs, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
While such an outcome is hardly a lock, the notion would be supported by a return to practice on the part of Mathews in the coming days. The running back has missed the Chargers' last two games, with his absence in that span having being filled by a backfield committee led by Branden Oliver, with Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown also in the mix.
Fri Dec 19 201416:33Mathews (ankle) ruled out for Saturday's game against 49ers
Mathews (ankle) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the 49ers, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
With Mathews out again Saturday, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown (along with Ronnie Brown to a lesser degree) are in line to see added work in the Chargers' Week 16 backfield. Oliver led the team with 12 carries this past Sunday (compared to Donald Brown's five carries and Ronnie Brown's two rushes) and thus looks like the higher-percentage fantasy option this week out of the aforementioned RB trio.
