Through three weeks it has been Hankerson, not Roddy White, that has served as the second option in Atlanta's passing offense. Hankerson's 20 targets, 12 catches and 138 receiving yards all rank second on the team. Hankerson has never topped 38 catches in a season, but offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan clearly saw enough from him during their time together in Washington to bring him to Atlanta. Expect that rapport to pay dividends in terms of his role in the offense.

Hankerson caught six of his 11 targets for 77 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's game against the Giants.

Week 3 will see the Falcons travel to take on the Cowboys.

Given White's age and recent injury history, it won't be surprising if Hankerson spends a significant stretch of the season as Matt Ryan's No. 2 target.

Hankerson is continuing to draw praise from coaches during practice, ESPN.com reports.

Hankerson has been working as the team's No. 3 wideout during training camp, and he's been drawing praise for his play and his execution of Kyle Shanahan's offensive scheme. Hankerson is familiar with Shanahan's system from his days in Washington, but he also seems to have put that troublesome ACL injury behind him. He'll see plenty of playing time and targets if he can lock down that No. 3 role.

Hankerson caught 1-of-2 targets for 13 yards in Friday's preseason opener against the Titans.

Hankerson worked as the No. 3 wideout with the first-team offense, just as he has throughout much of training camp. His competition for the role consists of Devin Hester and fourth-round rookie Justin Hardy, who caught 3-of-6 targets for 41 yards while working with the second unit.

Hankerson has been impressing teammates and coaches during the first few days at training camp, the Falcons' official site reports.

Hankerson was reunited with former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan this offseason when he signed with the Falcons, so the pair are familiar with one another. Hankerson is getting more acclimated with the offense, but the Falcons also have a strong core of wide receivers. Julio Jones and Roddy White will lock down the first two receiver spots, but Hankerson could supplant Devin Hester as the third pass-catching option, which would significantly boost his ceiling in a pass happy offense.

Injuries often derailed Hankerson's four-year stint with Washington, but he'll get a fresh start with Atlanta, where he's in line to compete for wideout snaps behind the team's undisputed starters at the position, Julio Jones and Roddy White.

With Pierre Thomas, DeSean Jackson, and Andre Roberts in the picture, Hankerson may take some time to find his niche in the offense. That is, if he's indeed cleared for game action.
