As expected, Burfict will be ineligible for the first six games of the season, leaving third-round rookie Paul Dawson as the likely starter at weak-side linebacker. Coming off January microfracture surgery, Burfict is no lock to be ready when first eligible.

All signs point towards Burfict (knee) beginning the year on the regular season PUP list, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

If that's the case, Burfict wouldn't be eligible to play until after the third game of the regular season. P.J. Dawson could receive the resulting playing time with Burfict out.

Burfict, who's currently rehabbing from microfracture knee surgery, could be ready to practice by the end of August, the Bengals' official site reports.

Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther has his sights set on the last week of August for Burfict to possibly return to the field. Coach Marvin Lewis also remains optimistic about Burfict's progression, "He's got to keep after it and stay after it. He's got a certain time frame in mind. I see better than I hear," Lewis said of Burfict.

The Bengals hope that Burfict (knee) can ramp up to be ready by their third preseason game against the Bears, though he's not going to practice early on in training camp.

Sometimes when a player is put on the PUP list, it's merely a formality (as was the case with Geno Atkins, who was on just three days last training camp), but with Burfict there's some real doubt that he'll be ready for Week 1. So while that third preseason game is a goal, they have to be extra careful about taking him off the PUP list and having him start practicing, lest they lose the option to put him on the regular season PUP list.

"Microfracture has a bad connotation, but there are plenty of guys who have come back and been able to play like before. But it's not really news when it works out." When healthy, Burfict -- who was limited to five games in 2014 - is a top-notch IDP, having recorded a league-leading 171 tackles during the 2013 season.

Burfict has been sidelined since Oct. 26, and he apparently was not showing much improvement in his health, as Tuesday's transaction means he will not play again this season.
