Ihenacho (wrist) was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday, CSN Washington's Tarik El-Bashir reports.

Ihenacho's broken/dislocated wrist came with an initial recovery estimate of six-to-eight weeks, but he'll now have to wait until 2016. The Redskins will use Trenton Robinson and/or Jeron Johnson at strong safety next to Dashon Goldson.

Ihenacho is thus out indefinitely, with IR or short-term IR possibilities that are being considered by the team. Jeron Johnson is listed as Ihenacho's backup at strong safety on the team's posted depth chart.

Both Ihenacho and Jeron Johnson were acquired in the offseason, with the latter getting the much larger contract. No matter, Ihenacho managed to lock down the starting role, so he and Dashon Goldson will form one of the NFL's shakier safety duos. Though not especially talented, Ihenacho could make for an excellent IDP, as he'll presumably be an every-down player for a defense that will likely spend a lot of time on the field. He had 73 tackles, three forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in 15 games (14 starts) for the Broncos in 2013, but Ihenacho has otherwise seen very limited playing time during his career.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Ihenacho (foot) could compete with Jeron Johnson for the starting job at strong safety, Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports.

Ihenacho, a 2012 UDFA, is under contract for just $660,000, while Johnson signed a two-year, $3.5 million deal in the offseason. Johnson is the heavy favorite to start, but it at least seems Ihenacho has recovered from the fractured heel that limited him to three games last season. While Ihenacho recorded 73 tackles, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries for the Broncos in 2013, he was also a liability in coverage.

Ihenacho fractured his heel bone in Sunday's loss to the Eagles and is likely to miss several weeks, Chris Russell of ESPN Radio 980 reports.

Ihenacho was signed after final cutdowns in August in the wake of Brandon Meriweather's two-game suspension. Ihenacho only played four defensive snaps over the first two weeks of the season and recorded just one tackle. He left Sunday's game after playing in four special-team snaps, leaving the Redskins very thin in the secondary with DeAngelo Hall expected to miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles.

Ihenacho left Sunday's game against the Eagles with a foot injury and will not return.

After logging 74 tackles and forcing three fumbles with the Ravens last season, Ihenacho's production with Washington had been pretty moot prior to suffering the injury. He's logged just two tackles in three games and should be far off the IDP radar, even if he returns to full health in time for Week 4.

The Redskins have claimed Ihenacho off waivers from the Broncos, ESPN.com reports.

Ihenacho, who was squeezed out of the Broncos' safety mix by the presence of T.J. Ward and Quinton Carter, will give the Redskins some needed depth at the position, with Brandon Meriweather suspended for the team's first two games this season.
