Thompkins has been signed to the Patriots' practice squad, csnne.com reports.

Thompkins, who caught 32 passes for 466 yards and four touchdowns for the Patriots as a rookie in 2013, was cut by the team last October when linebacking depth was needed. At the time, the team was hoping that Thompkins would go unclaimed on waivers, thus allowing him to sign on with New England's practice squad. He ended up playing in 12 games for the Raiders, recording 15 catches for 209 yards in the process. Now that he's back with the Patriots' organization, it's not hard to imagine Thompkins being promoted to the team's active roster down the road.

Thompkins was waived by the Raiders on Monday, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.

Thompkins has been deemed expendable in a suddenly deep corps of wideouts, which includes Michael Crabtree, Amari Cooper, Andre Holmes (hand), Brice Butler (undisclosed), and Seth Roberts. If Thompkins passes through waivers unclaimed, the Raiders could offer him a spot on the practice squad in the near future.

Thompkins caught five passes on seven targets for 90 yards in Sunday's 26-24 win over the Bills.

Quarterback Derek Carr didn't throw a pass Thompkins' way in the team's previous two games, but he looked for the second-year wideout a team-high seven times Sunday. Thompkins responded by posting the second-highest yardage total of his career, more yards than he racked up in his previous seven games combined. The 26-year-old may have earned more snaps with this performance, but he'll still be nothing more than a daily/deep-league dart in Week 17.

Thompkins, who made 38 catches for 519 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie last season, could play for Oakland as soon as Sunday against the Chargers, but he may be used sparingly until he gets further acclimated to the offense.

The Raiders have claimed Thompkins off waivers from the Patriots, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Linebacker Ja'Gared Davis was promoted from the practice squad to take Thompkins' place on the 53-man roster.

As is Aaron Dobson, with the team's Week 4 wideout corps featuring Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Danny Amendola and Matthew Slater.

Thompkins was on the field for 38-of-73 snaps on offense in Sunday's win over the Raiders, ESPN.com reports.

Thompkins, who caught one pass for 16 yards in the game, worked worked behind Julian Edelman in Week 3, along with and Brandon LaFell and Danny Amendola. Of the four, Edelman is the only Patriots' wideout to have carved any fantasy utility out of the gate.

Thompkins is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Raiders.

With Thompkins back in the team's wideout mix Sunday, Aaron Dobson is the odd man out in Week 3.

Thompkins caught five passes on 10 targets for 37 yards in Sunday's 33-20 loss to the Dolphins.

Thompkins was among the Patriots' starters on offense Sunday, with fellow WR Aaron Dobson inactive. While his yardage output wasn't eye-popping, as long as he's getting the snaps -- and Dobson is not -- Thompkins is worth a look in deeper formats.

Once against starting over Brandon LaFell, Thompkins caught two passes for 35 yards on three targets in Friday's game against the Panthers.

Thompkins oddly saw his three targets on three consecutive plays, with a pair of first downs sandwiched around a drop in the second quarter. While he's quite clearly ahead of Brandon LaFell, Thompkins will likely face a challenge from Aaron Dobson (foot), who has yet to play this preseason but seems to be making progress. Whether it's Thompkins or Dobson in the starting role, the targets will likely be rather inconsistent, as was the case last season.
