After spending the last two weeks as quarterback insurance for the Colts, Johnson will head to Buffalo to do the same. Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor (ankle) is banged up and uncertain to play this week, and if he is unable to go, EJ Manuel would start for the Bills and Johnson would serve as Manual's backup.

Johnson has been conditionally employed by the Colts over the past two weeks, and upon his latest release from the team, Indianapolis is left with their usual duo of Andrew Luck (shoulder) and Matt Hasselbeck at the quarterback position.

The Colts have re-signed Johnson, the Indianapolis Star reports.

The Colts released him after this past Sunday's win over the Jaguars, but with Matt Hasselbeck under the weather and Andrew Luck continuing to deal with a shoulder issue, Johnson was brought back in to give the team QB insurance in advance of Thursday's game against the Texans.

Johnson was only on the Colts' active roster for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Upon him being released, only two quarterbacks remain on the Colts' depth chart, suggesting Andrew Luck (shoulder) stands a favorable chance of being available for Thursday's game versus the Texans.

With Andrew Luck (shoulder) a legitimate question mark for Sunday's contest against the Jaguars, Johnson was brought in as an insurance policy should Matt Hasselbeck go down with an injury of his own. The 29-year-old quarterback has played in 29 career games and has started just five of them during his time with the Buccaneers, Browns and Bengals.

Johnson will work out for the Cowboys on Tuesday, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Johnson will be joined by Matt Flynn and Christian Ponder. The team hasn't yet decided who Brandon Weeden's backup will be while Tony Romo (broken collarbone) is out, but if none of the veterans impress them, Kellen Moore could also be activated from the practice squad.

Johnson was released by the Jets on Saturday, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports.

With Geno Smith (jaw) out for at least the first few weeks of the season, Matt Flynn will serve as Ryan Fitzpatrick's backup, after beating out Johnson for the job.

Johnson will join a crowded quarterback field with the Jets, who currently have Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Matt Flynn and Bryce Petty. With Smith (jaw) and Flynn (ankle) missing time, Johnson is likely on the team to add some veteran depth.

A.J. McCarron was respectable in Monday's preseason loss to the Bucs, cementing his role as the No. 2 quarterback. Johnson will probably have a tough time finding a roster spot before Week 1.

Johnson (who was with Cincinnati in 2013) rejoins the Bengals' backup QB mix behind starter Andy Dalton, but we suspect that he slots behind A.J. McCarron on that front at this stage.

Johnson was released just four days ago to make room on the roster for special-teamer Kassim Osgood, but the Niners will bring him back to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the backup quarterback job. Neither Gabbert nor Johnson have attempted a pass this season.

Johnson was cut to make room for special teams ace Kassim Osgood. It stands to reason that the 49ers might keep Johnson on speed dial for if/when they're done with Osgood.

After his brilliant performance (14-of-17 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns) in Thursday's final preseason game, coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that he wants Josh Johnson on the 53-man roster, in addition to Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick.

Johnson has been battling Blaine Gabbert for the primary backup spot behind Colin Kaepernick all preseason. From a statistical standpoint, he has outperformed Gabbert on all levels, but Gabbert will be owed $2 million whether he makes the team or not, so it was generally accepted that Gabbert would win the battle. But Harbaugh's statement about carrying both quarterbacks introduces a new scenario where Johnson may make the 53-man roster after all. The 49ers finished last season with just two quarterbacks on the roster, but starting 2014 with three is not out of the question. We will see if Harbaugh's request is granted when rosters are trimmed to 53 on Saturday.

After Blaine Gabbert's struggles in Thursday's preseason loss to the Ravens, Johnson could be back in the mix for the 49ers' backup quarterback role, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Johnson completed 6-of-8 passes for 63 yards and also rushed for 15 in Thursday's contest. While neither he nor Gabbert are considered polished passers, Johnson does provide the element of a ground threat to keep defenses honest. This style of play more resembles current starter Colin Kaepernick's style should he ever go down with an injury. This will be a situation to monitor for the remainder of the preseason.

The move was just a lark as injuries left the 49ers short-handed at wideout, but it could be taken as an indication Johnson's roster spot is anything but secure. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Josh Johnson has a "pretty big lead" on John Skelton for the Bengals' No. 2 quarterback job.

The Enquirer named Johnson one of its five "standout" players through the first week of training camp, praising his command of the playbook and his ability to throw the deep ball. Both he and Skelton have big-time arms, but Johnson's experience in a West Coast offense is really showing. The preseason will tell us more.

Skelton has attempted 425 more career passes than Johnson, but reporter Geoff Hobson believes Johnson's scrambling ability and experience in the West Coast Offense makes him a slight favorite. Both quarterbacks have big arms. Dalton hasn't missed a start in two seasons, so whomever wins isn't going to be in for many snaps.
