The Colts have promoted Tipton from their practice squad to the team's 53-man roster, Kevin Bowen of Colts.com reports.

He'll bolster the Colts' running back depth in advance of Week 4, with Tyler Varga having missed the last two days of practice with a concussion.

Tipton was signed to the Colts' practice squad on Wednesday, Zak Keefer of The Indianapolis Star reports.

With the inevitable release of Vick Ballard finally arriving on Tuesday, Tipton was brought back to provide additional depth at the RB position. However with running backs Frank Gore, Josh Robinson and Tyler Varga already on the roster, it's unlikely Tipton will provide much of a fantasy impact this season.

Tipton was cut by the Colts on Saturday, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Tipton will look to catch on elsewhere as a depth back, with his release setting the stage for the likes of Tyler Varga and Vick Ballard to make the cut with Indy for now.

Tipton carried 16 times for 34 yards in Sunday's preseason opener against the Eagles.

Tipton saw added work Sunday, with Frank Gore and Boom Herron not playing, but at this stage, he's simply trying to cement a roster spot, as opposed to representing any sort of realistic threat to Gore's status as the team's lead back.

Tipton had two carries for 14 yards, adding one reception for 12 yards on two targets, in Sunday's 24-13 win over the Broncos.

Daniel Herron served as the Colts' workhorse, logging 23 carries and eight receptions, despite playing through an apparent arm injury. Tipton is next in line to lead the Indy backfield, but it seems likely that Herron will suit up for the AFC Championship Game in New England. After fumbling twice the previous week, Herron did not put any of his 31 touches on the ground Sunday afternoon.

Tipton ran 11 times for 40 yards and caught one pass for six yards in Sunday's 26-10 wild card win over the Bengals.

Tipton spelled Dan Herron -- who fumbled twice, losing one -- as Sunday's game progressed, while fellow RB Trent Richardson (who had been listed as questionable for the game) did not record a touch in the contest. Next weekend against the Broncos, we'd once again expect Tipton to work in a complementary role behind Herron, with Richardson's role somewhat murky at this stage.

Tipton lost three yards on his only carry, but had four receptions for 23 yards, including a one-yard touchdown, in Sunday's loss to Dallas.

Tipton got playing time late amid a blowout loss. He's the clear No. 3 on the depth chart behind Dan Herron and Trent Richardson. He could get some playing time this week with the Colts possibly limiting playing time for starters with the team almost certain to finish as the No. 4 seed in the playoffs.

Tipton is active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.

Tipton has put himself in position to win a roster spot as a fourth running back if the Colts keep that many. If he stays on the roster, he's a name to remember with Ahmad Bradshaw returning from a neck injury.

Tipton had eight carries for 14 yards and one reception for nine yards in Thursday's preseason loss to the Jets.

Tipton didn't get much help from Indy's second unit on the offensive line, but he didn't overly impress either. He's in a battle for fourth on the running back depth chart with Dan Herron looking set as the third running back. If not's clear if Tipton will make the final roster, but Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson are hardly sure things at running back given their injury and performance risk, so Tipton could get a shot at playing time.
