Wenning signed with the Bengals on Wednesday, the team's official site reports.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Ravens, Wenning spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad. His former team deemed him expendable after inking Matt Schaub in early May, but Wenning made the most of a recent workout at Paul Brown Stadium and will now compete with Josh Johnson for the third QB gig. If he wins that battle, Wenning would again spend the 2015 season on the practice squad with a member of the AFC North.

Wenning was released by the Ravens on Tuesday, ESPN's Jamison Hensley reports.

With Matt Schaub signing a contract that included $1 million in guaranteed money, Wenning was going to be a long shot for the final roster in 2015. He spent 2014 on the Ravens' practice squad, after being selected in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Wenning may get a shot at the top backup role in 2015, as Tyrod Taylor is set to become a free agent. It's not a spot the Ravens have prioritized, with the team highly reliant on Joe Flacco to stay healthy.

Wenning never really put up a challenge to Tyrod Taylor for the right to serve as Joe Flacco's top backup, but Taylor's rookie contract is up at the end of this season. If the Ravens are in the market for a new No. 2 QB, Wenning will likely be part of the conversation.

Wenning has good size at 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds but lacks arm strength and athleticism. He would seem to have a decent shot to beat out underwhelming Tyrod Taylor for No. 2 duties in new OC Gary Kubiak's West Coast offense.
