Watkins saw time at the nickel corner position during practice Sunday after JaCorey Shepherd was carted off the field, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Watkins has been a swiss army knife of a defensive back during his short time with the Eagles, moving between outside corner and safety in practices last season. He didn't see very much playing time until the final game of the year, but he might be thrust into a more prevalent role in the defense in the coming days if Shepherd's injury is serious. Watkins has a year of experience on other, younger cornerbacks like Denzel Rice and Randall Evans, which could help him when the team's roster is finalized.

Watkins, a 2014 fourth-round draft pick, is playing safety at OTAs, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
With versatile 2015 second-round pick Eric Rowe starting off at cornerback, the Eagles are giving Watkins a look at strong safety, which is a position of greater need. Watkins could perhaps compete with Earl Wolff and Chris Prosinki for the starting job, and it's also possible the Eagles will eventually give Rowe a look. Both Rowe and Watkins have the size/speed combination to play safety or cornerback.
Tue May 20 201410:21Watkins to compete with Fletcher to start?
Philly Mag "wouldn't rule out" Eagles fourth-round CB Jaylen Watkins pushing Bradley Fletcher for the starting job opposite Cary Williams.
Watkins (5-foot-11, 194) has the size to play on the outside, but Fletcher didn't have a bad season and is a strong press-man corner at 6-foot and 196 pounds. Watkins' main contributions should come on special teams while he competes for snaps in the dime package. Brandon Boykin is locked into nickel duties.
