Mettenberger struggled in Friday's preseason game in Kansas City, completing just 3-of-11 passes for 38 yards.
Mettenberger remains safely locked into the backup job, but nights like this are the reason he isn't challenging rookie Marcus Mariota atop Tennessee's quarterback depth chart.

Mettenberger went 7-of-9 for 91 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-14 win over the Rams.
Mettenberger looked impressive working the second quarter, as he engineered a touchdown drive on his first possession then showed an excellent rapport with rookie receiver Dorial Green-Beckham while running a one-minute drill that yielded a field goal. The Titans coaching staff believes Mettenberger is good enough to be an NFL starter, but he probably won't get a shot as long as he's stuck behind second-overall pick Marcus Mariota.

Mettenberger completed 8-of-11 passes for 129 yards to go with a touchdown and an interception in Friday's preseason opener in Atlanta.
Mettenberger looked reasonably sharp working with the second-team offense, but he still has almost no chance of starting unless Marcus Mariota gets injured. Charlie Whitehurst turned in a pedestrian effort in his one drive in the third quarter, so at least it looks like Mettenberger has a strong hold on the backup quarterback role.

Mettenerger was the second quarterback behind rookie Marcus Mariota during a running walk-through Tuesday when the Titans opened up the first of 10 organized team activities, The Tennessean reports.
Mettenberger, who started six games for the Titans in 2014, will serve as the backup quarterback this season. Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt wasted little time declaring Mariota the starter after he was drafted with the second-overall pick in the 2015 draft.

Mettenberger will likely be displaced by Marcus Mariota as the Titans' starting quarterback, ESPN.com reports.
While there was initially some thought that the Titans drafted Mariota with the intention of making a trade, GM Ruston Webster and head coach Ken Whisenhunt have strongly indicated otherwise, with Whisenhunt even saying that he's already made some revisions to his offense to suit the rookie. It's possible the Titans will have a quarterback competition, but Mariota would probably need to fall flat on his face to not come out as the winner. That leaves Mettenberger as the likely No. 2 quarterback in an offense that lacks high-end weapons at the skill positions, making him expendable in all but the deepest of dynasty leagues. There's perhaps some chance Mettenberger requests a trade, but he's unlikely to find a team that would give him a good chance to win the starting job, so it probably makes sense to just put on a happy face in Tennessee.

Mettenberger has organized workouts in Nashville with teammates, The Tennessean reports.
As of this writing, Mettenberger is the Titans starting quarterback, though there's been some speculation of late involving Philip Rivers coming to Tennessee for the second-overall pick. And then there's the chance the Titans make a grab for Marcus Mariota at No. 2 in the draft. According to a report on NFL.com, Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt isn't a fan of Mariotta's style but management relishes the thought of adding a Heisman Trophy winner to a drab and dreary team.

Mettenberger (shoulder) heads into the offseason as the leading contender to quarterback the Titans in 2015, The Tennessean reports.
Mettenberger was competent in his six starts, and that's often all that a young quarterback needs to do in order to get another chance. Of course, the Titans lost all six of those games, and the team will likely explore other options at the position. Holding the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, Tennessee is viewed as one of the possible landing spots for Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston.

Per the Tennessean, coach Ken Whisenhunt wouldn't rule out the possibility of Mettenberger dressing for Sunday's game, but the report relays that Charlie Whitehurst will start the contest, with Jordan Palmer in line to serve as the team's No.2 QB in Week 17.
Wed Dec 24 201418:04Mettenberger (shoulder) returned to limited practice Wednesday
Mettenberger (shoulder) returned to a limited practice Wednesday, the Titans' official site reports.
While Mettenberger hasn't been officially ruled out for Sunday's game against the Colts, coach Ken Whisenhunt acknowledged that it doesn't seem especially likely that the QB will be available this week. "We're going to see how he responds to it," Whisenhunt noted Wednesday, with regard to Mettenberger's practice participation. "We've still got a couple of days. I would doubt that he would play, but he may be available. You never know how a game would go, so we'll make that decision later in the week." In any case, Charlie Whitehurst is expected to start at QB for the Titans on Sunday.

Fri Dec 12 201413:33Mettenberger (shoulder) ruled out for Sunday's game against Jets
Mettenberger (shoulder) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets, John Glennon of the Tennessean reports.
With Mettenberger out this week, as expected, Jake Locker is in line to draw the start at QB for the Titans on Sunday, and while the team has yet to officially close the door on the possibility of Mettenberger seeing the field again this season, such an outcome does not seem especially likely at this stage.
Thu Dec 11 201414:28Mettenberger (shoulder) did not practice Thursday
Mettenberger (shoulder) did not practice Thursday, Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports.
Look for Mettenberger to be officially ruled out this week upon the release of the Titans' Friday injury report, an expected outcome which will confirm the assumption that Jake Locker will start at QB for the team on Sunday against the Jets, at a minimum.

Though ESPN.com reports that Mettenberger (shoulder) will miss the Titans' last three games, coach Ken Whisenhunt would only confirm that the quarterback is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Beyond that, Whisenhunt indicated that Mettenberger's status will be a week-to-week matter, but with the Titans 2-11, it would be a surprise to see the rookie signal-caller play again this season. Jake Locker is thus on track to start for the Titans on Sunday, assuming Mettenberger is out.

Mettenberger, who suffered a Grade 3 shoulder sprain/AC joint separation Sunday, is done for the season, per Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.
Wyatt adds that it appears as though Mettenberger won't require surgery, but the injury is significant enough to sideline the rookie signal-caller for the final three games of the Titans' season. As a result, Jake Locker is slated to reclaim the team's starting QB job down the stretch. With Locker slated to become a free agent this offseason, Mettenberger is in line to have an opportunity to compete for the team's starting assignment next year. Fellow QB Charlie Whitehurst remains under contract with Tennessee for 2015.

Per Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, the right shoulder sprain that Mettenberger suffered Sunday is more significant than the one he suffered last week.
Wyatt adds that Mettenberger has an MRI on tap Monday, while suggesting that at this stage, it looks like the QB may be shut down for the season. In such a scenario, Jake Locker would reclaim the Titans' starting QB job down the stretch.
Sun Dec 7 201418:23Mettenberger
Mettenberger, who re-injured his right shoulder in Sunday's loss to the Giants, said after the game that he will undergo an MRI on Monday, ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky reports.
Mettenberger struggled mightily before the injury, completing just 14 of his 24 passes for 125 yards and an interception. He also fumbled twice, losing one. Monday's tests should provide more clarity about Mettenberger's status going forward, but Jake Locker is poised to start in Week 15 start against the Jets if Mettenberger can't go.

Mettenberger (shoulder) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Giants.
Mettenberger is available this week for those who need him in deeper formats, but he'll helm a Tennessee offense operating with a depleted wideout corps, with Justin Hunter on IR and Kendall Wright out this week with a hand injury.
