Bishop will undergo surgery on his left thumb and will be out indefinitely, CSN Bay Area reports.
Bishop was expected to compete for a spot among the 49ers' linebacking core, but this injury probably cost him a spot on the 53-man roster.

Bishop has reached an agreement to sign a one-year contract with the 49ers, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.
With Patrick Willis and Chris Borland both retiring, the 49ers are exploring all avenues to address the inside linebacker position. The team still has All-Pro Navorro Bowman (knee) under contract, but Bowman missed all of 2014 in the aftermath of a torn ACL. Bishop, a regular starter for the Packers in 2010 and 2011, has just seven tackles over the last three years. If Bowman is healthy, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Bishop has any kind of IDP relevance. Meanwhile, Michael Wilhoite is still the favorite to start next to Bowman.
Wed Oct 1 201411:11Bishop re-signed with Cardinals on Wednesday
Bishop re-signed with the Cardinals on Wednesday, Yahoo! Sports reports.
Bishop was signed and released by the Cardinals last month, but will now be brought back to provide depth at linebacker for Arizona.
Sat Sep 6 201416:38The Cardinals have released Bishop
The Cardinals have released Bishop, the team's official site reports.
The report suggests that even with Alex Okafor not expected to play Monday night, the Cardinals still roster nine linebackers at this time, thus making Bishop expendable.
Thu Aug 14 201411:44Bishop (knee) will sign with Cardinals
Bishop (knee) will sign with the Cardinals, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.
The 30-year-old has endured two straight injury-filled campaigns, but assuming he can re-prove his health, he'll bolster the Cards' depth at inside linebacker in the wake of the team's recent release of Ernie Sims.
Thu Feb 20 201410:20Vikings likely to move on from Bishop
ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling expects free agent LB Desmond Bishop to move on.
Goessling points out that Bishop has had more season-ending surgeries (two) than starts (one) over the last two seasons. The latter surgery was to repair a torn ACL, something 30-year-old players often struggle to return from. Bishop is going to have to accept a non-guaranteed one-year deal and prove himself in camp somewhere.

Mon Oct 14 201313:41Desmond Bishop tears ACL, out for season
Vikings LB Desmond Bishop has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, and is done for the season.
The reserve outside linebacker went down in Sunday's loss. Bishop ends 2013 having played just 29 snaps. Signed to a one-year, $850,000 deal in June, he'll be a free agent at season's end. Going on 30, Bishop should be close to 100 percent for next summer's camp, but is obviously going to have a hard time getting deal.

Sun Oct 13 201314:14Vikings LB Bishop done with knee injury
Vikings LB Desmond Bishop is done for the day in Week 6 with a knee injury.
It looked serious. Bishop's snaps have been limited this year after the Vikings signed the ex-Packer in late June. We suspect he'll miss extended time.

Mon Sep 9 201313:22Desmond Bishop plays zero snaps in Week 1
Vikings LB Desmond Bishop didn't play a snap in Week 1 against the Lions.
The Vikings' starters are Erin Henderson (MLB), Chad Greenway (SLB), and Marvin Mitchell (WLB). Bishop has not earned defensive playing time and is a strict backup. The Vikings signed him to a one-year, $850,000 deal in June.

Mon Sep 2 201317:52Desmond Bishop hasn't won starting job
Desmond Bishop still hasn't won the Vikings' starting weak-side linebacker job.
"As we speak, Marvin Mitchell is still our starting" weak-side 'backer," coach Leslie Frazier said Monday. Bishop played well in August, but may still be learning Frazier's defense. To open the season, the Vikings will likely use MLB Erin Henderson and SLB Chad Greenway as their two linebackers in the nickel.

Tue Aug 13 201311:12Desmond Bishop's roster spot in jeopardy
Coach Leslie Frazier confirmed Desmond Bishop's roster spot is in jeopardy.
Bishop had to leave last week's preseason opener early due to groin pull. That came on the heels of questions about his health after tearing a hamstring in 2012. "So much of this is about how he plays over the next two weeks," Frazier said. "Or if he's not available because of his injury. I can't say it any simpler than that." When active, Bishop has been backing up Marvin Mitchell at weak-side linebacker.

Thu Aug 1 201308:59Desmond Bishop's health looking good
There are "no visible signs" of the torn hamstring that wiped out Desmond Bishop's 2012 season.
A week into camp, Bishop is showing burst on blitzes, moving well and hasn't missed a day of work. He's running behind Marvin Mitchell at weak-side linebacker for now, but won't have trouble winning that job or either of the other two linebacking spots if he sustains health.

Thu Jul 25 201316:21Desmond Bishop opens camp on strong side
Desmond Bishop opened training camp as the Vikings' first-team strong-side linebacker.
It was widely presumed Bishop would man the middle after the Vikings inked him in June, but they're giving Erin Henderson a shot to lock down "Mike" 'backer duties. Chad Greenway, typically a strong-side linebacker, will play on the weak side now if the new lineup sticks. There may be more shuffling in camp.

Fri Jun 28 201310:42Desmond Bishop getting just $750,000
Desmond Bishop's one-year deal with the Vikings is worth $750,000, and includes just $50,000 guaranteed.
Bishop can earn a total of $1.35 million through bonuses and incentives. His deal includes $100,000 in roster bonuses, and $500,000 in "playtime incentives." It's not a surprise after Bishop missed all of 2012 with a ruptured hamstring. Despite Erin Henderson's protests to the contrary, Bishop is expected to be the Vikings' middle linebacker.

Mon Jun 24 201315:06Vikes complete LB corps with Desmond Bishop
Vikings agreed to terms with MLB Desmond Bishop on a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
Assuming Bishop's hamstring holds up -- a rupture of the muscle cost him the entire 2012 season -- the moves stabilizes and completes a suddenly impressive Vikings linebacker corps. Rather than trot out journeyman special teamer Marvin Mitchell on the weak side, Minnesota will move Erin Henderson back to Will with Bishop playing Mike and Chad Greenway Sam. The Vikings' front seven will continue to be stout after ranking 11th versus the run in 2012. Bishop and Greenway will be the every-down linebackers, worth targeting as LB2/3s in IDP leagues.

Fri Jun 21 201316:58Three teams in mix for Bishop
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says Desmond Bishop will choose between the Chiefs, Giants and Vikings.
Bishop projects to middle linebacker in the Giants' and Vikings' 4-3 schemes. In Kansas City, he would play inside linebacker in a 3-4 front. Bishop could be a nice value pick for IDP owners. Two seasons ago, he notched 115 tackles in 13 games and played about 66 snaps per contest, according to Pro Football Focus. Bishop missed the 2012 season with a hamstring injury.

Thu Jun 20 201316:44Giants also in the mix for Desmond Bishop?
Free agent ILB Desmond Bishop tells CBS Sports' Pat Kirwan that he "may consider" signing with the Giants.
Bishop could also consider the Jaguars or Packers. He'd be a monster upgrade on Mark Herzlich or Dan Connor at MIKE 'backer for the G-Men. Kirwan gets the sense that Bishop will pick a team by the end of Thursday night. His only known visits have been to the Vikings and Chiefs on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. The soon-to-be 29-year-old would be a fit with any of the five teams.

Thu Jun 20 201310:06Bishop to decide on team after KC meeting
Free agent ILB Desmond Bishop is expected to decide on a team following Thursday's visit with the Chiefs.
Bishop reportedly had a "good" meeting with the Vikings, but still left town without a deal. Now he'll see about a possible starting job in Kansas City next to Derrick Williams. The Jaguars are also rumored to have interest, but no visit has been scheduled at this time.

Wed Jun 19 201317:46Vikes DC calls Bishop workout 'due diligence'
Vikings DC Alan Williams termed the team's workout of free agent ILB Desmond Bishop as "due diligence."
Bishop left his Tuesday tryout without a contract. He'll now head to Kansas City on Thursday, and perhaps Jacksonville at some point down the road. Provided he's healthy - Bishop was still limited in Packers minicamp as he made his way back from a ruptured hamstring - he should have little trouble finding a new home before camp.

Tue Jun 18 201315:30Report: Jags 'exploring' Desmond Bishop
The Florida Times Union reports the Jaguars are "exploring" free agent ILB Desmond Bishop, but have yet to schedule a visit.
Bishop is meeting with the Vikings on Tuesday and Chiefs on Tuesday, so it's quite possible he'll never make it to Jacksonville. Bishop would be a nice fit for a lot of teams, but particularly the Jaguars, who need to stockpile as much talent as possible as they begin the arduous task of remaking ex-GM Gene Smith's broken roster.
