Thu Apr 30 201515:27The 49ers have signed Wheeler to one-year deal
The 49ers have signed Wheeler to a one-year deal, the 49ers' official site reports.
Wheeler, who racked up 118 tackles for Miami in 2013, saw his production dip in 2014, to the tune of 46 tackles in 15 games, including four starts. He'll bolster a 49ers' inside linebacker corps that also currently rosters the likes of NaVorro Bowman, Michael Wilhoite, Desmond Bishop, Nick Moody, Nick Bellore and Shayne Skov.
Sat Mar 7 201515:41Miami cut Wheeler on Saturday
Miami cut Wheeler on Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
The Dolphins gave Wheeler a five-year, $26 million deal almost exactly two years ago, but he was a major liability against both the run and pass during his two years in Miami. Wheeler ought to be able to push for a backup spot somewhere if his price tag is low enough, but it's hard to envision a team coveting him as a starter given his recent track record.
Wed Feb 25 201510:43Wheeler expected to be salary cap casualty
Wheeler is expected to be a salary cap casualty, according to the Miami Herald.
With the Dolphins not getting much bang for their buck at the linebacking position it looks like they will release both Dannell Ellerbe and Wheeler and look for cheaper options either in the draft or free agency.
Sun Jan 4 201521:21Wheeler had 45 tackles during 2014 season
Wheeler had 45 tackles during the 2014 season.
That's a pretty ho hum number for a player who played in 15 games and started four. Wheeler could end up on the roster bubble next season as he failed to impress this year and had plenty of opportunities with all of the injuries the team had to the linebacking corps.

Wheeler (thumb) is not included on the Dolphins' inactive list ahead of Sunday's game versus the Bills.
Wheeler missed Miami's season opener due to a thumb injury, but will make his 2014 debut Sunday in Buffalo, where the Dolphins will be fielding an unfamiliar linebacking corp in wake of injuries to both Koa Misi (ankle) and Dannell Ellerbe (hip).

Wheeler (thumb) is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Bills, the Dolphins' official site reports.
Wheeler who missed the Dolphins' season opener against the Patriots, is thus on track to return Sunday, but we'd like to see him get a full and productive game in before recommending him as an IDP option.
Thu Sep 11 201421:37Wheeler (thumb) will not play Sunday versus Bills
Wheeler (thumb) will not play Sunday versus the Bills, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.
This comes as a little bit of a surprise as it was thought earlier this week that Wheeler would be able to suit up Sunday. The Dolphins will be playing with a revamped LB corps Sunday which could lead to the Bills controlling the clock with the run game.
Thu Sep 11 201417:18Wheeler (thumb) expected to be available Sunday against Bills
Wheeler (thumb) is expected to be available Sunday against the Bills, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.
Wheeler has been limited in practice this week, so it will be worth seeing how the Dolphins officially list him Friday, but things do appear to be trending favorably for the linebacker at this stage.
Fri Sep 5 201418:33Wheeler (thumb) ruled out for Sunday's game against Patriots
Wheeler (thumb) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Patriots, the Sun-Sentinel reports.
With Wheeler, who racked up 118 tackles last season, out Sunday, look for a combo of Jason Trusnik, Chris McCain and Jelani Jenkins to fill the void created by Wheeler's Week 1 absence.
Wed Sep 3 201421:04Wheeler (thumb) will play with cast on right hand
Wheeler (thumb) will play with a cast on his right hand, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.
This would seem to be a bad thing for a player who has had his struggles tackling both last season and this summer, although I suppose an optimist might say it couldn't hurt any.
Mon Aug 25 201420:02Wheeler (thumb) expected to miss next few days of practice
Wheeler (thumb) is expected to miss the next few days of practice, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.
Wheeler is still expected to be ready to start the season at this point in time but it may be as a backup rather than as a starter.
Mon Aug 11 201422:05Wheeler may be in danger of losing starting job
Wheeler may be in danger of losing his starting job, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Wheeler was one of the league leaders in missed tackles last season and didn't seem to improve all that much in the first game of the pre-season. He could be on a short leash.
Sun Mar 2 201416:19Philip Wheeler became 'complacent' in '13
One Dolphins source told the Miami Herald that WLB Philip Wheeler became "complacent" after ex-GM Jeff Ireland signed him to a five-year, $26 million contract.
In other words, he mailed it in after getting paid. Ireland also happened to guarantee the entirety of Wheeler's $5 million salary for 2014, making him very difficult to cut just one year into the deal. Wheeler was a missed tackle machine in 2013, and was regularly attacked successfully in pass coverage.

Fri Feb 21 201413:37Raiders would be interested in Philip Wheeler
Per the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders would be "very interested" in WLB Philip Wheeler if he were released by the Dolphins.
Raiders beat writer Vic Tafur has heard "a couple times" at the Combine that Wheeler may be cut by Miami. He had a strong 2012 campaign in Oakland. Releasing Wheeler would cause a $4.2 million cap penalty for the Dolphins, so we're not sold it'll happen despite a nightmarish debut season with the team.

Sun Jan 5 201411:17Could Dolphins cut WLB Philip Wheeler?
The Miami Herald hints there's a chance the Dolphins could release WLB Philip Wheeler.
Signed to a five-year, $26 million contract that included $13 million guaranteed last March, Wheeler was horrific in his first season with the Dolphins. Pro Football Focus credited him with a whopping 18 missed tackles and graded Wheeler out as its worst 4-3 outside linebacker. If Miami does release Wheeler, it'd likely do it as a post-June 1 cut. Jelani Jenkins could be asked to fill in at weak-side 'backer in 2014. The signings of Wheeler and MLB Dannell Ellerbe are parts of the reason GM Jeff Ireland's job status is in question.

Mon Mar 11 201320:43'Good chance' Wheeler isn't back with Raiders
The San Francisco Chronicle says there is a "good chance" free agent OLB Philip Wheeler doesn't re-sign with the Raiders.
Wheeler was one of the lone bright spots in Oakland last season, so his loss would be a blow to the defense. The 28-year-old has been gaining steady buzz this weekend, and the Rams have already shown interest in him. The Chronicle mentions free agents Manny Lawson and Nick Barnett as replacement options.

Mon Mar 11 201318:17Raiders 'definitely' want Philip Wheeler back
According to NFL.com, the Raiders "definitely" want free agent LB Philip Wheeler back.
Touted as one of the potential steals of free agency, Wheeler is gaining more and more buzz. By the time his market settles, he might not be much of a steal after all. Wheeler graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 6 4-3 outside linebacker last season, one of the few bright spots on a rancid Raiders' defense. They'd do well to retain him.

Sun Mar 10 201312:43Rams have some interest in OLB Wheeler
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Rams have "at least some interest" in free agent LBs Philip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe.
Wheeler and Ellerbe would be options on the strong-side in St. Louis, opposite Jo-Lonn Dunbar and next to James Laurinaitis. The position is one of just two to three weak spots on the Rams' defense after dumpster-diving for Rocky McIntosh last offseason. Ellerbe is said to be seeking $6 million annually, and Wheeler will likely be around the same.

Fri Mar 8 201320:01Philip Wheeler could be free agent steal
At least one NFL personnel evaluator believes SLB Philip Wheeler could be a steal in free agency.
"He had a great year in Oakland," said the evaluator, who works for an NFC team. "He was playing like his hair was on fire. He was their best defensive player on the field most of the time." Wheeler noticeably stood out on a bad Oakland defense, along with Desmond Bryant and Lamarr Houston. Pretty much everyone else was terrible. Wheeler, 28, is not expected back with the Raiders.
