Sat Sep 712:07Alex Cobb Scratched Due To Blister
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Alex Cobb (finger) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday at Dodger Stadium against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a blister issue. Cobb had a small blister surface on the inside of the middle finger on his throwing hand when he faced the Pittsburgh Pirates last Sunday. Instead, right-hander Gavin Williams will face the Dodgers on Saturday, with right-hander Tanner Bibee moving into Williams' spot on Sunday. It's been one thing after another for Cobb this year, who landed on the injured list in the middle of August with a fractured nail. The 36-year-old veteran started the year with the Giants but didn't pitch at all for them before being traded to Cleveland. He's been solid in his three starts for the Guardians with a 2.76 ERA with 10 K's and three walks, but he wouldn't have been a recommended fantasy streamer in LA against a potent Dodgers lineup.

Mon Sep 201:00Alex Cobb Sparkles In Return
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Alex Cobb was terrific in his return from the IL, going six shutout innings and earning the win in a 6-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cobb was perfect through six innings, but gave up back-to-back singles in the seventh before exiting the game. He punched out six and walked none in the contest. The 36-year-old was making his return from a fractured fingernail suffered on August 14 and showed no signs of rust. He is a solid waiver-wire target in deeper leagues and is streamable in the right matchups in standard-size leagues.

Fri Aug 3017:38Alex Cobb Expected To Start On Sunday
Cleveland Guardians veteran right-hander Alex Cobb (finger) is expected to come off the 15-day injured list to start on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Progressive Field. Cobb hasn't been able to stay healthy all year, but this time he's recovering from a mere cracked fingernail on his pitching hand. Because his injury wasn't very serious, he did not end up making a rehab start in the minor leagues. The 36-year-old made just two starts with the Guards after being acquired in a trade from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline. In those two starts, he yielded six runs (five earned) while walking three and striking out four in 10 1/3 innings versus the Twins and Cubs. The matchup against Pittsburgh is a friendly one, but Cobb doesn't have much fantasy upside in the strikeout department these days and should only be a streaming candidate in deeper leagues.

Mon Aug 1920:22Alex Cobb Goes On 15-Day Injured List
The Cleveland Guardians placed right-hander Alex Cobb (finger) on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a fractured nail on his right hand and selected the contract of left-hander Anthony Gose from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move. The team also moved left-hander Sam Hentges (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list. Cobb just can't seem to keep himself healthy this year after just recently making his 2024 debut on Aug. 9 after being traded from the San Francisco Giants to Cleveland at the trade deadline. In his two starts for the Guardians, the 36-year-old veteran gave up six runs (five earned) on 12 hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out only four in 10 1/3 innings against the Twins and Cubs. Cobb looked better in his second outing last Wednesday against Chicago, but now he'll be forced to miss another two weeks and is running out of time to make much of an impact as a low-upside streamer in deep fantasy leagues.

Fri Aug 918:33Alex Cobb To Make Season Debut On Friday
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, finger, shoulder) is scheduled to make his season debut against the Minnesota Twins on Friday in Game 2 of a doubleheader between the division rivals. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined all season long due to multiple injury issues. He is finally ready to pitch once again after making seven rehab starts. Cobb looked fairly solid in those rehab outings, so it looks like he's still got something left in the tank. He'll be a risky streaming option in his first game back against fairly good Twins offense.

Mon Aug 512:14Alex Cobb Strikes Out Five In Latest Rehab Start
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Alex Cobb (hip, finger, shoulder) made his latest minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Columbus on Saturday and allowed an earned run on three hits while walking two and striking out five in 4 2/3 innings of work. This was Cobb's seventh rehab start and first with Cleveland since being acquired at last week's trade deadline from the San Francisco Giants. The veteran hurler had offseason hip surgery and then suffered setbacks with his shoulder and finger (blister), which have kept him from making a start in the big leagues in 2024. Cobb threw 69 pitches on Saturday and touched 94.9 mph with his fastball, so he's definitely on the cusp of joining the Guards' rotation. He doesn't have much strikeout upside, but Cobb could be a useful deep-league fantasy streamer for Cleveland. His debut could come this weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tue Jul 3015:10Guardians Acquiring Alex Cobb From The Giants
The Cleveland Guardians are finalizing a deal to acquire right-hander Alex Cobb (hip, finger shoulder) from the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, according to sources. It's unclear exactly what the Guardians will send to the Giants in exchange for Cobb, but it's unlikely to be a substantial return in terms of prospects since Cobb has yet to pitch in 2024 due to multiple injury setbacks. The 36-year-old had offseason hip surgery and then suffered setbacks with his shoulder, and most recently, a blister issue. With Cobb leaving San Fran, it means that rookie Hayden Birdsong should have a rotation spot to close out the year. Cobb could make his season debut this weekend with the Guards, but fantasy managers should temper expectations for a veteran pitcher that has never missed a ton of bats in his career. At best, he'll be a deep-league, matchup-based streamer.UPDATE: The Guardians are sending the Giants pitching prospect Jacob Bresnahan and a player to be named later.

Sun Jul 2814:55Alex Cobb's Return Pushed Back Again
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, finger, shoulder) popped a blister on his right index finger in his last minor-league rehab outing, according to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle. Rubin further expressed that Cobb's potential return to the major leagues is likely pushed back due to this minor setback. Cobb has missed the entire 2024 season so far due to undergoing offseason hip surgery, and he injured his right shoulder along the way. Through his first 18 1/3 innings of rehab work, the right-hander has held a 3.93 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and a 7:24 BB:K. The 36-year-old might need one more rehab outing before returning. He could be worth a look in deeper leagues when he returns, as he posted a 3.87 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 151 frames last summer.

Fri Jul 2619:50Alex Cobb Could Make Season Debut Next Week
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) will throw five innings in a minor-league rehab start for Single-A San Jose on Friday night, and if all goes well, he will return to make his 2024 debut for the Giants on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics. Cobb will essentially be replacing right-hander Jordan Hicks, who will make his last start of the year on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies before moving to the bullpen to protect his workload. The 36-year-old Cobb started the year on the injured list after having offseason hip surgery and then suffered a setback with his right shoulder along the way, keeping him out for the entire first half. Cobb has limited fantasy upside with a 19.9% career strikeout rate but could be a worthwhile deep-league streaming option in the right matchups when he returns to San Fran's starting rotation.

Mon Jul 2220:24Alex Cobb Throws Five Scoreless Innings In Rehab Start
In his first minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, San Francisco Giants veteran right-hander Alex Cobb (hip) struck out four over five scoreless innings while throwing 60 pitches. Manager Bob Melvin said the Giants will check in with Cobb before determining his next steps, but the skipper suggested the 36-year-old could return during the team's next homestand from July 26-31 if he continues to feel good. Cobb progressed well in his rehab from offseason hip surgery but hit another setback when he felt mild shoulder irritation before throwing a bullpen session on April 16. He was moved to the 60-day injured list on April 20 and attempted to resume throwing after that but was shut down again after more soreness in his shoulder. Cobb is injury-prone and doesn't miss a ton of bats, but he could be a deep-league fantasy streamer down the stretch if he can stay healthy.

Sat Jul 2021:28Alex Cobb To Continue Rehab Assignment On Saturday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) will continue his rehab assignment on Saturday and start for Triple-A Sacramento. The start will be his fifth start of his rehab assignment, pointing to him coming very near his return to the Giants' rotation. Should all go well, the Giants will have to determine if the 36-year-old needs another start before being added to their active roster. The Giants will certainly be happy to welcome him back as they've dealt with their own plethora of injuries in their rotation, including Blake Snell and Robbie Ray (who also has yet to pitch for the Giants this season). Cobb has a 3.80 ERA for the Giants in his two season with San Francisco and they will need him to continue his solid production if they hope to compete for a wild card spot (currently 3.5 GB). Fantasy managers looking for starting pitching help should snag Cobb off the waiver wire and keep a close eye on his status for the next week.

Wed Jul 1715:23Alex Cobb Goes Three-Plus Innings In Fourth Rehab Start
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) went 3 1/3 innings on Monday in his fourth minor-league rehab start in the Arizona Complex League and allowed one earned run on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Cobb has fanned 16 and walked only four in 11 1/3 innings on his rehab assignment in the rookie-level ACL and with Single-A San Jose so far, but he's likely to need several more rehab outings to get his arm built up more before being reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The 36-year-old veteran had offseason hip surgery and then suffered a setback with his right shoulder, which is why he's yet to pitch for the Giants in 2024. Cobb should have a rotation spot waiting for him in the second half when he returns and will be worth a look then in deeper fantasy leagues as a streaming option after making his first All-Star squad with San Fran in 2023.

Fri May 2418:25Alex Cobb To Begin Throwing Program
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb (shoulder) is set to resume a throwing program during the weekend. The 36-year-old suffered a setback in his recovery process roughly a week ago. Now, the Giants are ramping up Cobb's activities again in hopes that he can join the Giants rotation. However, Cobb is not close to being ready to pitch in the MLB again. It's good to see him throwing again, which is a step in the right direction.

Sat May 1814:56Alex Cobb Shut Down From Throwing
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) has paused his throwing program and is not close to returning, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Cobb has been placed on the 60-day injured list since April 20 and has been shut down numerous times in his recovery process. Manager Bob Melvin emphasized that the 36-year-old pitcher still feels discomfort in his shoulder. This is not a good sign, as Cobb could be activated from the injured list later this month. This timetable looks unrealistic, and his absence could extend close to the All-Star Break. Cobb made 28 starts last season and showed excellent command with a 5.7% walk rate and a stellar 57.8% ground-ball rate. Cobb should remain on the waiver wire in all leagues but is worth keeping on an injured reserve spot in NL-only formats if you have room.

Fri Apr 2621:55Alex Cobb Still Feeling Soreness In Shoulder, Will See Doctor
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) has been held back from throwing activities the last few days as he's still experiencing soreness in his shoulder. He is scheduled to see Dr. Ken Akizuki Friday night. Cobb had been working his way back from a hip surgery he had in October and started to experience some setbacks after throwing a bullpen session a few weeks ago. The 36-year-old won't be eligible to come off the injured list until late May, but these setbacks may push his return further into June. This isn't the news the Giants wanted to hear after needing to put newly acquired Blake Snell on the 15-day injured list this week. Cobb will have a rotation spot available for him when he returns, but fantasy managers and Giants fans will need to exercise patience for a couple more months for that moment.

Tue Apr 2312:38Alex Cobb Won't Return Until Late May
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) was moved to the 60-day injured list on April 20, so he won't be eligible to return until May 27. Cobb was progressing well in his rehab from offseason hip surgery, but he hit another minor setback when he felt mild shoulder irritation before throwing a bullpen session on April 16. He "felt OK" when he resumed throwing but saw team orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki as a precaution on April 18, according to manager Bob Melvin. Cobb said the imaging on his shoulder came back clean, and he's currently throwing out to 75 feet on flat ground. The 36-year-old also had a "baby setback" when he was briefly shut down with a mild flexor strain in his right elbow. Cobb should have a rotation spot waiting for him when he's healthy, but he can stay on the waiver wire for now in most mixed leagues.

Fri Apr 1901:02Alex Cobb To Throw On Flat Ground On Friday
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (shoulder, elbow, hip) said after the game on Thursday night that he had an MRI exam come back clean and that he will throw on flat ground on Friday. The news comes after it was reported earlier on Thursday that Cobb developed "mild shoulder inflammation" in his right arm two days after his latest bullpen session. The 36-year-old veteran has now dealt with elbow and shoulder issues while initially rehabbing from offseason hip surgery. It's good news that his shoulder injury isn't anything serious, but he's going to need at least several weeks to ramp his arm back up before he becomes a realistic option for the Giants' starting rotation in 2024. Injury issues aside, there's not a ton of fantasy upside with Cobb at this point in his career.

Thu Apr 1821:15Alex Cobb Now Dealing With Shoulder Irritation
The San Francisco Giants announced on Thursday that starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, shoulder) is now dealing with mild shoulder irritation amid his recovery from offseason surgery on his left hip. Cobb says his arm is just still a little "cranky" as he ramps back up, but he doesn't believe his timetable has changed much. It's still yet another minor setback for Cobb, who just resumed throwing on Monday following a brief shutdown due to a mild flexor strain in his right elbow. The 36-year-old right-hander was an All-Star in 2023 and should still be able to return at some point in the month of May. Until Cobb is ready to re-enter San Fran's rotation, swingman Jordan Hicks should remain locked in as a starter for the Giants. Hicks features a 1.57 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 18:6 K:BB through 23 innings (four starts) and is a must-roster fantasy player ahead of Sunday's scheduled start versus the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tue Apr 1621:44Alex Cobb Resumes Throwing Tuesday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip, elbow), who was briefly shut down recently with a mild flexor strain in his right elbow, has been cleared to resume throwing and tossed a bullpen session in Arizona on Tuesday. Other than that hiccup, Cobb is progressing well and believes he's ahead of schedule in his rehab from offseason surgery on his left hip. The 36-year-old right-hander was an All-Star in 2023 for the first time in his career, and despite running into trouble with the long ball in the second half, he still managed to compile a solid 3.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 131:37 K:BB across 151 1/3 innings (28 starts). Cobb could re-enter San Fran's rotation at some time during May, and he's a decent stash in most fantasy leagues. With Robbie Ray (elbow) also on the shelf, Jordan Hicks and Keaton Winn should continue to function as starters for the Giants for the time being.

Fri Apr 513:18Alex Cobb Shut Down For A Few Days
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (elbow) felt a little elbow soreness while throwing recently. An MRI exam came back clean, but he'll be shut down for a few days. The Giants are being very careful given their rotation depth, and Cobb said he's still ahead of schedule from hip surgery overall. The 36-year-old veteran is officially dealing with flexor-tendon inflammation, but it's not considered serious. He's expected to resume throwing on Monday as he ultimately tries to recover from offseason hip surgery. Cobb should be a member of the back end of San Fran's starting rotation when he's healthy at some point in the first half of the season, but fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues shouldn't expect a ton from an aging pitcher with a long injury history.
