Mastroianni's foot came off first base awkwardly after he beat out a double play. He was able to walk off on his own, which hopefully means the injury isn't a huge setback. Mastroianni initially hurt his ankle on March 25 and has been working back ever since.

Mastroianni's surgically-repaired left ankle was a little stiff after he ran, but it loosened up as he went through the workout. "I didn't feel any pain at all as I was swinging, and it loosened up as I worked," he said. "For it to actually feel better as I worked it, that was really great. It was a big step." Mastroianni will have an X-ray taken next Tuesday to see how his ankle has healed, but he says he's "way ahead of schedule." The Twins hadn't been expecting him back until August.

It was a very discouraging sign when Mastroianni, who was already progressing slowly in his recovery, was uncomfortable testing his ankle during light sprints on Wednesday. He shouldn't be expected to return to the Twins until after the All-Star break and can safely be dropped in deeper mixed formats.
