RHP Anthony Swarzak returned to the mound Wednesday and earned his first victory as a Brewer despite allowing a run on two hits in an inning of work. Swarzak had missed Milwaukee's last four games because of stiffness in his neck. He was acquired from the White Sox just ahead of the trade deadline and has made eight appearances for Milwaukee, allowing two runs over 7 1/3 innings of work with 11 strikeouts.

1B Eric Thames was not in Milwaukee's starting lineup Wednesday but appeared as a pinch-hitter against the Pirates, striking out in his only at-bat. Thames has had a rough month, batting just .196 through his first 13 August games. Since posting a .345 average with 11 home runs in April, Thames has struggled, batting just .215.

SS Orlando Arcia was still bothered by back spasms and sat out a second straight game. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he was hopeful that after an off-day Thursday, Arcia could return to the lineup Friday night when the Brewers open a weekend series at Colorado.

LHP J.P. Howell was designated for assignment Wednesday. Howell owns a 1-1 mark with a 7.35 ERA in 16 games with the Blue Jays. He was on the disabled list twice with left shoulder issues. He is 36-30 with a 3.83 ERA and 22 saves in 547 major league games.

RHP Dominic Leone was activated from the bereavement list Wednesday. Leone is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 45 games with Toronto.

C Miguel Montero was activated from the disabled list Wednesday. Montero went on the 10-day disabled list on Aug. 4 with a strained right groin. He was 0-for-3 in one rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Buffalo. Montero is 3-for-36 (.083) with one home run, three RBIs and six walks in 13 games with Toronto after he was released by the Chicago Cubs.

RHP Kyle Barraclough, who hadn't pitched since July 24 due to a shoulder issue, got back on the mound on Tuesday, allowing one run -- on a homer -- in his one inning of work. He struck out two and walked none. The bases on balls have to be Barraclough's main focus as he is walking 5.9 batters per nine innings.

RF Giancarlo Stanton's streak of home runs in six consecutive games was snapped on Wednesday against the Giants. Stanton, who leads the majors with 44 homers, went 2-for-4 with two singles, and he was also hit in the back by a Matt Cain pitch that registered 91 mph. Despite not going deep on Wednesday, Stanton has slugged 11 homers in his past 13 games and 23 in 36 games. He's on pace to hit 60 homers this year, a milestone reached by only five players in major league history.

LHP Albert Suarez, a former Miami Hurricanes star, would've loved to be with the Giants this weekend as his organization played at Marlins Park. But Suarez, who turns 25 in September, could be close to joining the big team. The prospect, who was the Giants' second-round pick in 2015, has reached Triple A for the first time in his career. He is 5-5 with a 3.36 at Triple A this year, pretty good numbers in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He has allowed just 69 hits, including three homers, in 69 1/3 innings.

RHP Jose Urena, who leads the Marlins in wins, improved to 11-5 on Wednesday, beating the Giants. He allowed just one run, unearned, in five innings, improving his ERA to 3.61. Urena has 11 wins following a team loss, and he leads the majors in that category.

RHP Johnny Cueto (blisters) will throw a bullpen session on Friday. Cueto, 31, has been disappointing in 19 starts this year, going 6-7 with a 4.59 ERA. Last year, in 32 starts, he was an All-Star and finishing sixth in the Cy Young voting, going 18-5 with a 2.79 ERA.

2B Joe Panik was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list retroactive to Monday. He was hit on the head during a home-plate collision on Sunday at the Washington Nationals.

C Buster Posey did not start Wednesday's day game after a night contest. Posey, 30, is having another strong offensive year even if it has been lost in the midst of the Giants' losing season. Posey is batting .316 -- eight points above his career average. His .880 OPS is 28 points higher than his career average. And he has 12 homers, two short of last year's total.

RHP Jeff Samardzija (7-12, 4.74 ERA) will start for the Giants on Thursday when they start a four-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Samardzija, 32, will make his 25th start this year, and the Giants are 10-14 when he's on the mound. He has won three of his past four decisions, but he has struggled in his career against the Phillies, going 1-4 with an 8.67 ERA.

RHP Matt Cain (3-10), who lasted just four innings, allowed five runs, two earned, on Wednesday against the Marlins. He is winless in his past 13 starts, going a career-worst 0-9 in that span. He hasn't won a game in more than three months (May 15). All three of Cain's unearned runs occurred in the first inning, when Miami scored four times.

LHP Clayton Richard on Wednesday threw the Padres' first complete-game shutout since RHP Andrew Cashner blanked the Phillies on Sept. 15, 2014. Richard lowered his ERA from 5.14 to 4.84. Richard allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six and getting 18 outs on ground balls. In his last three starts, Richard has allowed seven runs (three earned), 16 hits and six walks with 16 strikeouts in 21 innings for a 1.23 ERA. During those three starts, his ERA has fallen from a season-high 5.40 to 4.84.

C Cameron Rupp doubled in his first at-bat Wednesday and finished the season 6-for-14 against the Padres with a home run. In 16 career games against the Padres, Rupp is 14-for-55 (.255) with five homers and 12 RBIs.

RHP Jered Weaver announced his retirement Wednesday morning. Weaver, 34, was 0-5 with a 7.44 ERA in nine starts with the Padres this season after going 150-93 in 11 seasons with the Angels. Weaver had been on the Padres' disabled list since May 19. "He's busted it hard trying to get back," Padres manager Andy Green said. "But over the last year and a half he hasn't felt very good physically. To me, he's the consummate professional and an unbelievable teammate. Guys love him in this clubhouse and respect him immensely. He had an unbelievably great career in the major leagues and for the brief time he was around here, he was a blast to have. He was a positive influence on guys. I will always think highly of him. He gave it everything he had and didn't have much left. His hip bothers him when he throws. He can't get all the way through (his delivery). It'd be impossible to point out every given thing he's gone through to get out there and pitch ... and he wanted to pitch well for us this year. His stuff wasn't what it once was. He didn't have much left from a physical regard."

2B Cesar Hernandez was 0-for-4 on four groundouts Wednesday to end his five-game hitting streak. Hernandez, who leads the National League with 25 infield hits and eight bunt hits, was 8-for-20 during the hitting streak.

CF Odubel Herrera, who tweaked his left hamstring Monday night, missed a second straight game Wednesday, although manager Pete Mackanin said he was available to pinch hit. But he didn't and remains day to day. So Mackanin said the Phillies would likely call up another position player for insurance until Herrera returns to the lineup.
