Wed May 30 201821:06Musgrove's hard slide causes Cubs, Pirates benches to empty
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A hard slide by Pittsburgh pitcher Joe Musgrove led to the Pirates and Chicago Cubs emptying their benches in another tense moment in the series between NL Central rivals.Musgrove slid hard into second baseman Javier Baez to break up a potential double play in the third inning on Wednesday night. Baez was knocked off balance but did not hit the ground. No punches were thrown as both teams milled around the infield and there were no ejections.Crew chief Gerry Davis instituted a video replay review to see if Musgrove interfered with Baez. However, replay officials at Major League Baseball's central office in New York informed Davis that it was not a reviewable play. The Pirates were angered Monday when Anthony Rizzo's slide upended catcher Elias Diaz at home plate, successfully breaking up a potential double play in the eighth inning of Chicago's 7-0 win.The umpiring crew and replay officials ruled Rizzo did not interfere with Diaz. However, Major League Baseball executive Joe Torre informed both clubs Tuesday that Rizzo should have been called for interference for swiping Diaz's right leg.
Wed May 30 201817:46Pirates rookie Meadows making instant impact
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The "Wow" moment didn't come when Austin Meadows received the news the Pittsburgh Pirates were calling him up to the majors. It didn't come when the outfielder's extended trek to the majors ended when he stepped into the batter's box for the first time as a big leaguer on May 18 in front of an appreciative PNC Park crowd that included hundreds dressed up as "Star Wars" characters as part of a promotion.Instead, it arrived when he woke up in a hotel room across from the ballpark the morning of his debut and peeked out his window. What he saw forced him to do a double take, which tends to happen when you catch a glimpse of yourself on a banner stretched four stories high."I didn't really expect that," Meadows said with a laugh. That might be the only thing that's caught the 23-year-old off-guard. Long considered the eventual heir to Andrew McCutchen before a series of injuries at Triple-A slowed his progress, Meadows has been a revelation. He entered Wednesday hitting .417... [More]

Tue May 29 201820:05MLB: Rizzo's slide not dirty, it was illegal
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon believes Anthony Rizzo's slide that upended Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Elias Diaz at home plate on Monday is still perfectly legal. So does Maddon's superstar first baseman.Major League Baseball? Not so much.MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre informed both clubs on Tuesday that Rizzo should have been called for interference for swiping Diaz's right leg while Diaz attempted to make a throw to first base to complete a potential double play in the eighth inning of Chicago's 7-0 victory on Memorial Day.Diaz's throw ended up sailing into right field, allowing two runs to score. The Pirates challenged the call on the field but replay officials opted not to overturn it.Nearly 24 hours later, MLB believes Rizzo violated Rule 6.01 (i), which states "if a runner does not engage in a bona fide slide, and initiates (or attempts to make) contact with the fielder for the purpose of breaking up a double play, he should be called for interference."Maddon... Fri May 25 201816:04Epstein: No trade talks for Cubs despite Machado speculation
CHICAGO (AP) — The idea of Manny Machado joining Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo in a powerhouse lineup sure is a tantalizing one.Whether that happens or not, the Chicago Cubs are banking on the players they have to perform up to expectations. So far, that hasn't happened. And if fans are frustrated, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein understands."I think we should have high expectations," he said Friday. "I think this group has earned a tremendous amount of trust. It's OK to be really frustrated with our inability to really get locked in and get hot and play up to our talent and our expectations, while at the same time being really optimistic that this group really figures it out."Epstein insisted his team has not engaged in trade talks, despite speculation about a potential deal with Baltimore for Machado. He wouldn't comment on reports that the Cubs could be a landing spot for the slick-fielding slugger. He said there are "zero trade talks" at the moment and Chicago has enough... [More]
Thu May 24 201800:14Plutko, Miller pitch Indians past Cubs 1-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Adam Plutko was nervous. Not about making his second major league start, really. It was all about stepping to the plate.Once that was over, everything fell into place.Plutko carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Andrew Miller provided stellar relief work, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Wednesday night."We know when (Plutko) commands everything, he can be pretty good," manager Terry Francona said. "But on a night when he didn't command real well, he still did pretty damn good."Plutko (2-0) was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to replace the struggling Josh Tomlin in Cleveland's rotation. The right-hander issued each of his four walks in the first two innings, but settled down after a successful sacrifice in the third in his first at-bat since he was a junior in high school in 2009."I was really nervous to hit, and so as soon as I got that bunt down in the third, I felt like a lot more calm and everything was a lot better," he said.Plutko's...
