RHP Jacob Turner was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse for a spot start Monday and took the roster spot of Stephen Strasburg. When Strasburg was reinstated Thursday, Turner, who gave up three runs in six innings in his start, the Nationals kept Turner in their bullpen. "He can give us multiple innings, throws strikes," manager Dusty Baker said. "We need to know the resiliency of his arm. His arm is probably more resilient than Joe Ross' in the pen." Turner has made 26 relief appearances in the majors, including 16 last year with the White Sox. Ross has made three relief appearances in the big leagues. When asked about Turner's comfort level relieving, Baker said. "Joe's relieved some too, but not nearly as much. I'm sure he'll be happy just to be here. It beats the alternative no matter what the role is."

RHP Jacob Turner will make his season debut Monday night, when he takes the mound for the Nationals in the opener of a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The start was originally scheduled to be made by RHP Joe Ross, but Tuesday's starter, RHP Stephen Strasburg, is going on paternity leave Monday, so the Nationals decided to push Ross back to Tuesday and rely on a spot starter for Monday. Manager Dusty Baker said the club preferred to use someone with major league experience at Coors Field instead of a prospect making his major league debut. Turner earned the promotion by going 0-0 with a 2.61 ERA in three starts at Syracuse. He is 12-27 with a 5.09 ERA in 79 big league games (53 starts) dating back to 2011.

Turner (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday.
Turner, who has been on the DL since the start of the season, is expected to start Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader for the Smokies. He remains without a firm return timetable, but if everything goes well on the rehab assignment, he could return to the Cubs prior to the end of the month. Turner, who split last season between Miami and Chicago, posted a 6.49 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) for the Cubs.

Turner (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday.
The Cubs were in need of an extra reliever from the Triple-A ranks after Saturday's 11-inning victory over the Padres, so Turner was dropped from the 40-man roster in order to accomodate the call-up of Gonzalez Germen. Turner's move to the 60-day DL indicates that the Cubs probably aren't counting on having him fully healthy until June at the earliest.

Turner (elbow) will take a month off from throwing, CSN Chicago reports.
The good news here is that Turner has no ligament damage, as a second opinion confirmed, but he will need a month to let the bone bruise and mild flexor strain in his right arm heal. Turner made just one Cactus League appearance before the injury forced him out of action. While Turner is out of minor league options, he will be able to spend up to 30 days on a minor league rehab assignment before being activated.

Turner pitched two scoreless innings in a split-squad loss to the Giants on Thursday.
He walked two and struck out one. He's a bit of a long shot to win a spot in the back of the Cubs' rotation, but if he keeps putting zeroes on the board it can't hurt.

The Cubs exercised Turner's $1 million club option for 2015, the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports.
It wasn't surprising to see the Cubs roll the dice on the former top prospect midway through the season, after he posted a 5.97 ERA in 78.1 innings with the Marlins, but he was even worse after joining the Cubs, posting a 6.49 ERA in 34.2 innings. His 4.37 xFIP suggests he can be better in 2015, but his 14.2 percent K-rate from 2014 demonstrates how low the ceiling is with Turner.
