Pedroia (.303, 6 HR, 54 RBIs) has taken part in fielding drills and batting practice since landing on the disabled list Aug. 12 (retroactive to Aug. 9). "The next marker ... is going to be as he aggressively runs the bases," Farrell said. "Once we get through that ... I think we'll get a better read on where's he at and a potential activation at some point in the near future." Farrell added that there is still no timetable for Pedroia's return.

2B Dustin Pedroia was not in the lineup Friday because his left knee flared up following Wednesday's game. Pedroia was activated from the disabled list Wednesday and was 0-for-4 as a designated hitter but Farrell said there was some swelling and inflammation. He will be examined further by Boston-based orthopedic doctor Andreas Gomoll and Farrell said a DL stint is possible. Pedroia has yet to play in any games at Yankee Stadium as he missed the June series with a sprained left wrist. "Our goal was to get him some at-bats before this series," Farrell said. "He's shown that there's been a little bit of a pushback in terms of the reaction to it. Some swelling, some inflammation, so we're holding him out today."
