LF Jayson Werth (broken left foot) is expected to return in mid-August. However, Werth, 38, may not have a starting job when he returns. Howie Kendrick, acquired from the Phillies last month, went 5-for-5 on Tuesday and is having a strong season, seemingly taking hold of the starting job in left. Adam Lind is also in the picture. And the Nationals, once CF Michael Taylor returns in a few days, will also have other options because they have Brian Goodwin already playing well in that spot. Furthermore, this is the final season of Werth's seven-year, $126 million contract. His big-money days are over, and this could be his final hurrah. In 47 games this season, he is hitting .262 with eight homers and 18 RBIs.

LF Jayson Werth (left foot contusion) is likely out until after the All-Star break, manager Dusty Baker said Monday. Werth took some swings Sunday but still can't put weight on the foot, Baker said. Werth may head to Florida at some point in his rehab, said the manager. "I'm doing a lot better. It's kind of getting going, looking at a schedule, maybe playing some rehab assignment. I'm not quite there, but definitely improving," Werth said Monday. "It was something I knew was going to take some time. I had something similar in the past but nothing this bad. This time was way worse, the MRI showed quite a bit of bone edema and we knew it was going to be four to six weeks." Werth is hitting .262 with eight homers and 18 RBIs. He still can't put weight on the foot, Baker said. "When it's ready I'll be ready to go play, and it's just a matter of getting my legs in shape. It's nice definitely the team having a nice lead and all that, but I want to be on the field," Werth said. "You hate to put a date on it or a timeline on it. But we're getting close to getting on the field and running. It's progressing, it's coming along. It's just taking time."

LF Jayson Werth (left foot contusion) was placed on the disabled list June 5, retroactive to June 4. He was put on the 10-disabled list and has missed 10 games, but it appears unlikely he will be ready to play after missing 10 games. "He's doing pretty well," manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday. "He's not as mobile as he'd like to be. I mean, we miss Jason. He's using the pool, he's doing a lot of swimming, and so there's things that he can do to stay in shape, because you'd hate for him to come back and then like I explained to him, get hurt on another part, pull a muscle or something. He's doing pretty good. He's kind of going crazy" not being able to play.

"It's not going to be quick," Washington manager Dusty Baker said Thursday. "Anybody that's ever hurt their toe, it heals the slowest. The circulation there, it looks ugly. We're not planning on Jayson the next three days. He's just trying to get the swelling out of it." Werth is hitting .262 with eight homers and 18 RBIs.
