Wood is 0-2 with a 10.67 ERA, giving up 18 runs, 17 earned, on 21 hits and 13 walks over 14 1/3 innings. "They are a little surprising," Royals manager Ned Yost said of Wood's struggles. "It's just like he can't gain momentum; he can't get into a good groove right now. He hadn't pitched in six days (before Tuesday). Right now it's just been a struggle for him.

He was so pitch-efficient, he permitted us to do what we did. Four innings, 43 pitches. He was spectacular."

LHP Travis Wood earned his second victory of the season with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, then drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk in the 13th inning Wednesday night at Milwaukee. It was the first RBI of the season for Wood, who has 31 for his career.

LHP Travis Wood agreed to a one-year, $6.17 million on Friday to avoid arbitration.

Wood earned his third save by recording two outs in the ninth inning in a 4-1 victory over the Reds.

Wood has been spectacular in September, surrendering only one earned run during the month, and notching multiple strikeout efforts in seven of 10 appearances. He is also two-for-two in save opportunities and has generated an outstanding 0.64 ERA. Wood's precise role in the postseason is yet to be determined, but he will undoubtedly continue to serve as a key component of the Cubs bullpen.

Wood allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings in Saturday's start.

He tossed 46 pitches as the first man up in a bullpen day for the Cubs and did an adequate job. Expect Wood to head back to long relief after this outing.

Wood will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Wood pitched Thursday night in relief, so it's likely he will only pitch a few innings maximum in the contest. He's likely just a temporary fill-in, and he probably won't start many or any more games down the stretch.

Wood picked up his second save of the season in a 9-6 victory over the Pirates on Thursday, striking out five of the six batters he faced over two innings.

Wood has actually now whiffed 10 of the last 18 batters he's faced over two appearances, racking up an absurd 56 percent strikeout rate over that period. Thursday's game also marked the sixth consecutive trip to the mound in which Wood has not surrendered an earned run, and he turned in a highly efficient effort after throwing 53 pitches over three innings in a Sep. 12 spot start against the Phillies. Wood's outstanding 10.76 K/9 rate continues to serve as the most valuable asset he brings to the mound in each appearance.

Wood will start Saturday against the Phillies, Jason Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.

Dan Haren has been pushed back to Sunday to protect against a rain-shortened outing -- there's inclement in the forecast in Philadelphia on Saturday -- opening the door for Wood to step in eighth start of the season. Wood hasn't thrown more than 33 pitches in an appearance since the calendar turned to August and isn't likely to be available for more than a few innings against the Phillies.
