RHP Jake Arrieta pitched with a laceration on his right thumb. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits to drop to 6-5, but said he wasn?t bothered by the cut. Instead, he said some wetness caused by heavy sweating made if difficult to grip his pitches. "The finger is OK," Arrieta said. "I think that's the biggest concern is that this is OK." Arrieta hit his first home run of the season and fifth of his career to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth inning. He homered against Pittsburgh once before, in a 4-0 win on Sept. 27, 2015.

RHP Jake Arrieta (5-4, 4.60 ERA) makes his 12th start of the season but only fourth at home on Tuesday. In his last start on May 31 at San Diego he had no decision despite his fifth quality effort while allowing just one earned run over six innings on five hits while striking out seven. Arrieta has made two career starts against Miami, both over an 11-day span from June 8-18, 2014 and collected 18 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run on eight hits. He's 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA this season at Wrigley Field and 3-4 with a 5.20 ERA in eight road starts.
Thu Jun 1 201703:33RHP Jake Arrieta allowed 11th home run of season Wednesday
RHP Jake Arrieta allowed his 11th home run of the season Wednesday. That is one more than he allowed in all of 2015 when he won the National League Cy Young Award. But he had one of his better starts of the 2017 season, giving up one run, five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. "He was good, he was very good," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Arrieta. "The velocity ticked up and he had an outstanding curveball today. Obviously, he pitched well enough to win."

RHP Jake Arrieta isn't ailing, but his pitch velocity is down which has led Chicago observers to wonder if he's hiding an injury. That led his agent, Scott Boras, to aggressively reply that a drop-off in velocity is normal among elite pitchers. He had charts created indicating similar velocity changes of star hurlers including Claytn Kershaw, Zach Greinke and Max Scherzer. "(They're) evaluating a player on a 60-day moment or a 10-start moment when he has three years of history. Don't do it. That's not fair. That's not an evaluation,'' Boras said. "The reality of it is Jake has a great history. He did in '14, '15, '16 and now he's doing it in '17." Arrieta has allowed ten home runs this season, well above his usual trend.

RHP Jake Arrieta didn't have a bad night but the few mistakes he made cost him and the Cubs in a loss to the Dodgers. Arrieta (5-4) gave up four runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and a walk in six innings. "I thought he was sharper today overall," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "I thought his command was good and I thought his curveball was outstanding. With Gonzalez, it was a bad count (3-1) that got him. He had pitched so well before that with the two punchouts. My analysis would be that (with) the homers he's getting in some bad counts and he's making some mistakes and they're not missing them."

The game marked the first time since April 4 Arrieta did not allowed an earned run."I felt good," he said. "I kept the ball on the ground quite a bit today, which was nice. That's obviously an indicator of a step in the right direction."

RHP Jake Arrieta lost his second straight start Sunday, victimized by two-run homers from Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter and a lack of support from the offense. Manager Joe Maddon said Arrieta had his best stuff of the year, citing his command and the number of swings and misses, but Arrieta still gave up seven hits and four runs in his six innings with a walk and five strikeouts. Arrieta entered the day with a 1.71 career ERA against St. Louis.

RHP Jake Arrieta allowed a career-high-tying nine runs, five earned, on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts in the first game. It's the third time he has allowed nine runs in a game, the last being in his only other start at Coors Field on Aug. 6, 2014. The 3 2/3 innings pitched is Arrieta's shortest start since July 5, 2012, when he pitched 3 2/3 innings for the Baltimore Orioles at the Los Angeles Angels. This was the shortest of Arrieta's 105 starts with the Cubs. "It was a pretty poor performance on my part," Arrieta said. "You're hoping to punch a few more guys out than I was able to do today, keep the ball on the ground a little bit more. ... From start to finish, I didn't mix (pitches) well enough. Like I was too consistent with my fastball-slider versus mixing in some changeups and my breaking ball for strikes. And they were ready to hit. I just couldn't miss many barrels today."

RHP Jake Arrieta (3-1, 4.66 ERA) makes his sixth start of the season on Wednesday as he looks to rebound from his shortest outing in nearly three years. Arrieta worked just 4 1/3 innings and took the loss in last Friday's 5-4 setback to the Red Sox. It was the first time in 72 straight games he did not reach or pass five innings since Aug. 28, 2014 at Cincinnati. The streak was the longest by a Cub since 2013 and the longest in the majors since Cole Hamel's 76-straight games from 2011-14. Arrieta is 3-1 with a 1.63 ERA all-time against the Phillies.

RHP Jake Arrieta looks to start a new streak of games of five-plus innings pitched when he takes the mound on Wednesday. Last Friday he departed after just 4 1/3 innings, the first time in 72 straight game he did not reach or pass five innings since Aug. 28, 2014 at Cincinnati. RHP Jake Arrieta was rocked for five runs between his first and second outs of Friday night's start and loss in Boston. It was the second straight start he allowed at least four runs in the first inning (a career first) and like he did against Cincinnati he settled down. But he only lasted only 4 1/3 innings, escaping a bases loaded/nobody out jam in the fifth. It was a stark difference to his previous start at Fenway Park, when he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning -- and it also ended a 10-game April winning streak. He fell to 3-1 on the season and 1-4 lifetime against the Red Sox. He is 12-9 in interleague play.

RHP Jake Arrieta earned the victory Saturday despite allowing four runs in the first. Arrieta struck out eight and didn't walk a batter, but allowed five earned runs and a pair of home runs. Arrieta gave up four runs on two homers in the first inning Saturday after allowing seven runs and one homer in the first inning in his previous 57 starts combined. "The velocity looked a little better," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "The slider was better today. He threw the ball better, just had one bad inning."
