RHP Matt Belisle (right calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after he showed some discomfort after he retired David Lough on a liner to first to start the seventh on Tuesday. Belisle threw a warmup pitch and then left the game after facing just one batter, and Oliver Perez came on to pitch. Belise said after the game that he strained his right foot -- an injury he has had in the past. He walked gingerly toward the shower after talking to reporters, and it appears he is likely headed to the disabled list.

Belisle (elbow) will be activated before Saturday's regularly scheduled game, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

He will be available out of the bullpen Saturday and will help strengthen an already loaded Cardinals bullpen down the stretch.

Belisle began throwing in July, but appears to now be nearing a return. He'll likely need to go on a brief rehab stint before being activated, but a mid-September return to the big league club should be within reach.

Belisle picked up the win out of the bullpen Saturday against Milwaukee, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Belisle hasn't been terribly busy as this was just his second appearance in the last eight days. Still the veteran righty has pitched in seven games for the Cardinals and is sporting a perfect ERA and a 0.95 WHIP.

Belisle is expected to make the Opening Day roster, MLB.com reports.

Belisle signed with the Cardinals in December, coming over from Colorado, and will try to rebound from a down 2014 that saw him post a 4.87 ERA. Belisle has pitched in eight games this spring, logging 7.0 innings without allowing a run, giving up five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Belisle endured one of his worst seasons in 2014, posting a 4.87 ERA over 64.2 innings with Colorado, but he's displayed exceptional control throughout his career (2.2 BB/9) and has proven very durable, appearing in at least 66 games in each of the last five seasons. He'll fill a middle-relief role for St. Louis in 2015.

Belisle was charged with his seventh loss of the season Tuesday against the Giants, with the right-hander giving up four runs on four hits and recording just one out.

Belisle has been absolutely pounded in his last two appearances, covering 1.1 innings and surrendering seven hits and six earned runs. His current 5.37 ERA so far this season would mark his worst showing since 2009.

The Rockies were forced to go to Belisle in Friday's start. He managed to pitch well for the most part, while not recording a decision. Belisle (4.82 ERA) threw a season-high 49 pitches in the start before turning things over to the Rockies' bullpen in the fourth inning.

Belisle will start Friday against the Reds.

The Rockies will be forced to turn to Belisle to oppose Reds ace Johnny Cueto on Friday with Franklin Morales leaving to attend to the birth of his child. Belisle hasn't thrown more than 36 pitches in an outing this season, so Friday's game will likely be a full-bullpen effort.
