If the injury does prove to be a fracture, it could potentially end Uehara's season, as the last-place Red Sox will have little reason to rush him back to the field.

Uehara will return to Boston for a full exam on his wrist, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

Uehara was struck by a line drive in Friday night's contest, and the team will get another look at the hands of their own doctors just to be safe. Boston has a team day off on the schedule for Monday, and will then head to Miami for a two-game series. Whether or not Uehara joins them there will likely be dependent on the results of the exam. Until then, Junichi Tazawa or Jean Machi seem to be the most likely ninth-inning options.

And he's still an effective pitcher, having closed out 22 of 24 save opportunities with a 2.64 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. What remains to be seen is if Boston wants to trade him and whether or not he serves as a closer on a new team.

Uehara keeps chugging along and hasn't allowed a baserunner in his last six appearances over six innings.

The Red Sox are usually careful to monitor Uehara's usage, but apparently are comfortable where's at right now. And they should be as Uehara has been one batter short of perfect over his last five appearances. There's a good chance if a closer is needed Wednesday, Uehara will not be used.

Uehara got Evan Longoria and David DeJesus swinging for his 28th and 29th strikeouts of the season (25 innings). The 40-year-old is now tied with David Robertson for eighth in the AL in saves.

The 40-year-old continues to pitch effectively as Boston's closer. For the season, Uehara has an impressive 2.86 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 25:6 K:BB ratio in 22 innings.
