Mon Aug 10 201512:04Koji Uehara: (Wrist) Headed To 15-Day DL
The Boston Red Sox will put pitcher Koji Uehara on the disabled list due to a wrist injury Monday, according to the Boston Globe.
The Boston Red Sox will put pitcher Koji Uehara on the disabled list due to a wrist injury Monday, according to the Boston Globe. The 40-year-old closer sustained the injury -- which may be a fracture -- when he was hit by a comebacker Friday, leaving Junichi Tazawa as the likely ninth-inning man in Boston. Uehara has excelled since coming to the major leagues from Japan prior to the 2009 season, with this year's 0.92 WHIP representing the sixth consecutive campaign in which he has posted a mark under 1.00. All in all, Uehara has closed 25 games in 27 opportunities while posting a 2-4 record, 2.23 ERA and 47 strikeouts with nine walks in 40.1 innings. If the injury does prove to be a fracture, it could potentially end Uehara's season, as the last-place Red Sox will have little reason to rush him back to the field.
Sun Aug 9 201517:11Uehara will return to Boston for full exam on wrist
Uehara will return to Boston for a full exam on his wrist, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
Uehara was struck by a line drive in Friday night's contest, and the team will get another look at the hands of their own doctors just to be safe. Boston has a team day off on the schedule for Monday, and will then head to Miami for a two-game series. Whether or not Uehara joins them there will likely be dependent on the results of the exam. Until then, Junichi Tazawa or Jean Machi seem to be the most likely ninth-inning options.
Sun Aug 9 201513:10Uehara slated to receive CT scan on right wrist Sunday
Uehara is slated to receive a CT scan on his right wrist Sunday, ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reports.
Initial indications were that Uehara didn't suffer any structural damage to his wrist when he was struck by a line drive Friday night, but the Red Sox ordered the scan just to double check that he's not dealing with the a significant injury. Uehara isn't expected to be available until at least Tuesday's series opener against the Marlins, leaving Junichi Tazawa to serve as the team's top ninth-inning option for the time being.

Uehara (wrist) will not be available to pitch until Tuesday at the earliest, the Boston Globe reports.
Uehara took a batted ball off his wrist during Friday night's game, but managed to throw the runner out at first base to pick up a save. The wrist swelled up on him, making him unavailable to pitch this weekend.

Uehara will likely be unavailable for Sunday's game against the Tigers.
Uehara still has some swelling in his wrist after being hit Friday, leading to manager John Farrell's declaration that he probably won't pitch. Assuming that's the case, either Junichi Tazawa or Jean Machi would likely pitch in a save situation Sunday.
Sat Aug 8 201517:15Koji Uehara: (Wrist) Unavailable Saturday
Uehara (wrist) will not be available to pitch in Saturday's game against the Tigers, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
The right-hander earned the save Friday but was hit on the wrist by a line drive off the bat of Ian Kinsler on the final play of the game. While X-rays were negative, manager John Farrell said that Uehara is "sore" and will be down for at least one day. Either Junichi Tazawa or Jean Machi will handle a save situation should one arise Saturday.

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Koji Uehara will not be available to pitch Saturday against the Detroit Tigers because of a wrist injury, according to the Providence Journal.
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Koji Uehara will not be available to pitch Saturday against the Detroit Tigers because of a wrist injury, according to the Providence Journal. Uehara was struck on the wrist by a line drive on the final play of Friday's game, but X-rays revealed no structural damage. "He's not the biggest and bulkiest guy, and you're in the wrist area where a lot of different things can happen," manager John Farrell said. "He takes a smash back off the wrist, and yeah, you're holding your breath. I know his spirits were lifted a whole lot given he's down on one knee at the end of a win on the field. I know he'll be sore, but thankfully there's no fractures or breaks." Uehara could take a few days to heal, but he is not expected to miss a significant time.
Fri Aug 7 201522:58Koji Uehara: Suffers Wrist Injury Friday
Uehara picked up his 25th save of the season Friday but left the field in obvious pain after being hit on the right wrist by a line drive in the ninth inning, ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reports.
Ian Kinsler hit a liner off Uehara's wrist, which was a deflating moment for the Red Sox despite the fact that they got the win. It is unclear how serious the injury is, but Uehara may end up missing some time.

Uehara picked up his 24th save of the year, giving up one hit and walking another batter in the ninth inning of a 2-1 victory over the Yankees on Wednesday.
Things got interesting in the ninth --- Chris Young, who replaced Mark Teixeira after he reached on a single, advanced to second on a Uehara wild pitch. However, that's all the farther he would advance as Uehara shut the door on the Yankees, walking Chase Headley before getting Brian McCann to fly out to end the game. He's now 23-for-25 in save chances this season.

Uehara pitched around a walk, striking out two to record his 23rd save of the season in Boston's 7-5 win over the Rays on Friday night.
Uehara was rumored to be available prior to the trading deadline, but he is under control beyond this season, and remains an effective closer so Boston wasn't especially motivated to move him. He's still with the Red Sox and will continue to finish games for the foreseeable future.

Uehara tossed a pair of perfect innings, striking out two against Detroit on Friday night.
It was not a save situation - he entered the game to start the ninth inning with the score tied 1-1 - but Uehara has been mentioned in some trade speculation and the two inning outing was probably being observed by scouts from other organizations. He has a year remaining on his contract, so the Red Sox are not necessarily motivated to peddle him, but given the awful season they have suffered through, they may be listening to any and all offers.
Fri Jul 24 201506:03Uehara has attracted interest from other teams
Uehara has attracted interest from other teams, according to a source, the Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox need to be thinking seriously about selling off anything of value, and Uehara has one year remaining beyond this season at an affordable rate. And he's still an effective pitcher, having closed out 22 of 24 save opportunities with a 2.64 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. What remains to be seen is if Boston wants to trade him and whether or not he serves as a closer on a new team.

Uehara was touched for a game-winning homer by the Angels Mike Trout in Friday night's loss. He came on to pitch in a tie game, so this wasn't a blown save.
Uehara got one fastball past Trout, but not a second one. It was the first blemish on Uehara's ledger since he allowed two runs on June 21.

Uehara got the final three outs for his 21st save Wednesday, striking out one in a perfect ninth against the Marlins.
Uehara is 21-for-23 in save chances this season and has now converted 11 straight. On Wednesday, he needed only 11 pitches -- 10 of which were strikes -- to close out the Marlins. For the season, the 40-year-old has a 2.53 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 35:6 K:BB ratio.

Uehara closed out the Marlins on Tuesday, striking out two in a perfect inning to pick up the save in Boston's win. The save conversion was his 10th straight.
Uehara keeps chugging along and hasn't allowed a baserunner in his last six appearances over six innings.
Wed Jul 1 201506:20Uehara picked up save in Tuesday night's win over Blue Jays
Uehara picked up the save in Tuesday night's win over the Blue Jays. It was the third consecutive day the closer has pitched and picked up a save, and the fourth time he's pitched in the previous five days.
The Red Sox are usually careful to monitor Uehara's usage, but apparently are comfortable where's at right now. And they should be as Uehara has been one batter short of perfect over his last five appearances. There's a good chance if a closer is needed Wednesday, Uehara will not be used.

Uehara pitched a perfect 10th inning against Tampa Bay on Friday to earn his 15th save of the season.
He made quick work of the Rays after Brock Holt gave Boston the lead in the top of the frame, retiring the side in order on 10 pitches. Uehara got Evan Longoria and David DeJesus swinging for his 28th and 29th strikeouts of the season (25 innings). The 40-year-old is now tied with David Robertson for eighth in the AL in saves.

Uehara pitched a scoreless inning in a non-save situation Wednesday night in Boston's win over Baltimore.
Boston's recent slide hadn't afforded many opportunities for Uehara to garner saves -- he's had just one chance since June 6. Now, as the team's bats are heating up, when they are winning games, they've outscored opponents in such a way that Uehara's closing services aren't necessary.

Uehara struck out two in a perfect ninth against the Braves on Thursday to pick up his 14th save of the season.
The 40-year-old continues to pitch effectively as Boston's closer. For the season, Uehara has an impressive 2.86 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 25:6 K:BB ratio in 22 innings.

Uehara worked a perfect ninth inning Saturday, striking out one, to pick up his 13th save of the season.
He's pitched on three straight days and four of the last five, so expect someone else to handle any save chances the Red Sox might have on Sunday. Uehara now has a 2.37 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB ratio in 19 innings.
