Romero was optioned to Triple-A Durham after Tuesday's game, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.

He could return to offer bullpen depth later in the season, most likely in September, but with a 7.15 ERA Romero likely won't find his way into any save situations.

Romero has split much of his time this season between Triple-A and the majors, and should provide the team with an extra arm in middle relief.

The flamethrowing 24-year-old southpaw struck out three in two innings Monday, but also gave up three hits, a walk and a run. Fortunately, he appears to be over the back tightness that forced him out of his last appearance. Romero's given up 10 runs (nine earned) in just 10.1 innings out of the Tampa bullpen, so he'll continue to hone his craft in the minor leagues, where he's generally worked as a starter.

Romero left Tuesday's game with lower-back tightness, the Associated Press reports.

He gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out one in two innings prior to exiting, so some of those struggles may have been caused by an ailing back. Consider him day-to-day for now, but it does not seem like Romero will be pitching in high-leverage situations at the big league level anytime soon, even if he does get healthy.

The Rays have maintained a pretty consistent movement for their low-priority arms between the majors and Durham, with Romero now being called up for the third time in a month. He'll settle back into his usual bullpen role, and is likely to hit Durham again in the next few weeks.

The Rays brought Romero up for some bullpen insurance after five relievers were used in Friday's win. Sure enough, Romero was needed for three innings Saturday after starter Nate Karns went just 5.2 frames, but Romero walked five and will now head back down and await another opportunity. A corresponding move will not be announced until Sunday.

Romero has long been on the prospect radar, but he has since fallen off as a rotation option. There has been no official word on what his role will be with the Rays, but it seems likely that he will be used as a bullpen arm, with the chance to eventually replace one of the bottom three pitchers in the Rays' rotation if he makes a strong impression.

Romero is on the 7-day DL at Triple-A Durham with a back injury, the Montgomery Advertiser reports. "I will stay in extended (spring training) for a month," Romero said. "After that, I don't know if I'll go to the majors or go to Triple-A, but I'll be ready to go."

Romero is throwing up to 120 feet. He hurt his back two weeks ago and the injury ended any chance he had to be a temporary replacement for injured starters in the big league rotation.
