It was the fifth time in the last seven starts Tanaka allowed at least five runs. He is 0-6 with an 8.91 ERA in that span, a stretch in which his overall ERA has risen from 4.36 to 6.34. Tanaka is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in two career starts against the Rangers.

We've seen good splits. We've seen good location with his fastball but when you're off a little bit mechanically there's inconsistencies."

Tanaka's latest sub-par outing occurred a day after Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez tweeted: "I think is time to panic about Tanaka. His stuff is not there, that eastern division is really tough; I don't see him getting any better." Most of the postgame questions to Joe Girardi were about Tanaka and when asked if the issues might be physical, the manager reiterated they weren't by saying: "There's nothing that leads us to believe he's hurt. There's no signs."

He is 6-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 11 career starts against the Red Sox. He is 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA in five starts against them at Yankee Stadium.

All of his strikeouts were on sliders and splitters and each one was a swinging strike three. Tanaka turned in the ninth game in Yankees history with at least 13 strikeouts and no walks. He also was the fifth Japanese pitcher to record at least 13 strikeouts. Tanaka also tied a record by becoming the third Yankee to strike out 13 and get a loss. Roger Clemens did it twice May 28, 2000 vs. Boston and June 17, 1999 vs. Texas.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka starts Thursday afternoon against Kansas City and is coming off arguably his worst two starts as a major leaguer. Tanaka (5-1) allowed three earned runs and 10 hits including a two-run home run by Joey Votto in the seventh. It was Votto's 10th home run this season. Tanaka walked one and struck out six over his 112 pitches. "I was able to keep my poise," Tanaka said, via a translator. "It was a long game last night. I did have that in my mind to rest the bullpen."

He is 6-2 against Boston and has won five straight and is the first Yankee to shut out the Red Sox since Mike Mussina in 2002. "I enjoy the competition," Tanaka, speaking through an interpreter, said after pitching the Yanks' first shutout in almost three years. "I think a lot of people thought about how well he was pitching up to this point and that Chris Sale had the upper hand," Tanaka said. "I wanted to go in there and try to beat the odds, I guess."
