RHP Masahiro Tanaka was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and the move is retroactive to Thursday. Neither he or manager Joe Girardi said it will be a lengthy absence. While there is not an exact date, Girardi seemed to think Tanaka would return shortly after the 10 days are up on Aug 19. Tanaka was slated to start Monday against the New York Mets but felt something after laboring through four-plus innings Wednesday in Toronto. "I'm having (a) tough time getting the soreness out from the arm," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "The soreness is something that kind of gradually built up. I felt some extra soreness there after the outing in Toronto and I thought it would be better to mention about this (now)." Tanaka can opt-out of his contract after this season and so far, he is 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA. While he has 141 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings, Tanaka also has allowed 28 homers.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday by the Yankees because of right shoulder inflammation. Tanaka, 28, has battled elbow injuries over the last two years. The move is retroactive to Thursday. "We had him talk to our doctor," manager Joe Girardi told reporters prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the Boston Red Sox. "Our doctor prescribed that he's fatigued and he's probably got some inflammation. Nothing structural. We decided that he needs a break. So he is on the 10-day DL. There is no discomfort. There is no soreness, pain in a sense but we decided to put him on the DL. I don't think this will take too long. I don't. I feel pretty good about him coming back shortly after he is ready to come off."Tanaka last pitched on Wednesday in a poor outing against the Blue Jays, walking a career-high five batters and allowing three runs -- two earned -- and two hits in four-plus innings in the Yankees' 11-5 win in Toronto. For the season, Tanaka is 8-10 with 4.92 ERA in 23 starts. He was scheduled to pitch against the New York Mets on Monday.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka takes a five-game losing streak into Monday's start against the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of New York's seven-game road trip. Tanaka has a 6.55 ERA after allowing five runs and five hits in five innings in a 5-4 loss to Boston. Tanaka was originally slated to pitch Sunday but was pushed back an extra day on Friday. Tanaka has stated he believes mechanics are causing his struggles, and manager Joe Girardi didn't disagree. "I really believe it's consistency in his mechanics," he said. "It can be minor, just a tick late with your arm or your hip opens up early, your shoulder opens up a tick early and that's what leads to the inconsistency with the pitches. We've seen good sliders. We've seen good splits. We've seen good location with his fastball but when you're off a little bit mechanically there's inconsistencies."
