Tanaka is 0-5 with a 10.72 ERA in his last five starts, including a rough outing May 31 in Baltimore. Girardi made the move because he felt like Tanaka has struggled against the Orioles this season and an extra day might help. Tanaka said he's fine with the decision but remains unsure why his command is not going well since he said he never experienced this in Japan.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka was a popular topic again for manager Joe Girardi before Thursday's game and for all those who are wondering, he is still scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles. Tanaka has a 10.50 ERA during a five-game losing streak and a 6.55 ERA overall. When asked if skipping him might help, manager Joe Girardi said: "I wish I knew. If I knew I would definitely do that. You can't say that if you don't pitch three days, that's going to make it better or if you pitch here that's going to make it better because are you going to get a true measure if he goes (and) pitches someplace else of what his stuff really is. I wish I knew. Again it comes down to consistency. It's in there. We've seen it. We've seen good sliders. We've seen good splits, but it's everything being on time and consistent mechanics and all that work. For whatever reason, that's been a struggle. If I knew what the best thing to do (was), we'd say we're doing this and that's it, but he needs to work."

RHP Masahiro Tanaka, who has a 10.50 ERA during a five-start losing streak, still is scheduled to start Sunday against Baltimore. Most of the questioning in manager Joe Girardi's pregame press conference Wednesday concerned Tanaka's struggles. It is possible Tanaka could be pushed back a day to face the Anaheim Angels without Mike Trout on Monday, but that was not revealed Wednesday. When asked which pitches were the most inconsistent, Girardi cited the split-fingered fastball and slider. Tanaka spoke briefly to roughly 25 media members Wednesday and said the Yankees have not asked him to skip a day.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka's struggles continued Tuesday when he allowed three home runs among five hits and five runs in five innings. Since his three-hitter in Boston on April 27, he is 2-5 with an 8.50 ERA and during a five-start losing streak, his ERA is 10.50 Tanaka has allowed 14 of his 17 homers since April 27 and Tuesday marked the eighth time in his career he allowed at least three homers. Tanaka's latest sub-par outing occurred a day after Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez tweeted: "I think is time to panic about Tanaka. His stuff is not there, that eastern division is really tough; I don't see him getting any better." Most of the postgame questions to Joe Girardi were about Tanaka and when asked if the issues might be physical, the manager reiterated they weren't by saying: "There's nothing that leads us to believe he's hurt. There's no signs."

RHP Masahiro Tanaka (5-5, 6.34 ERA) will start on five days rest because of Monday's off-day in the schedule when he starts the opener of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. Tanaka is coming off a loss at Baltimore Wednesday when he allowed seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. The Yankees are 5-6 in his starts. He is 6-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 11 career starts against the Red Sox. He is 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA in five starts against them at Yankee Stadium.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka has not been able to find his way this season. His problems continued in the 10-4 loss to the Orioles on Wednesday night, where the right-hander allowed seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Tanaka did get his 500th career strikeout in the game but not much else went right. "It's tough obviously," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "You just have to keep on fighting."

RHP Masahiro Tanaka set a career high with 13 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings Friday but took a tough 4-1 loss to Oakland. All of his strikeouts were on sliders and splitters and each one was a swinging strike three. Tanaka turned in the ninth game in Yankees history with at least 13 strikeouts and no walks. He also was the fifth Japanese pitcher to record at least 13 strikeouts. Tanaka also tied a record by becoming the third Yankee to strike out 13 and get a loss. Roger Clemens did it twice May 28, 2000 vs. Boston and June 17, 1999 vs. Texas.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka starts Thursday afternoon against Kansas City and is coming off arguably his worst two starts as a major leaguer. Tanaka is 5-3 and has a 2.78 ERA in his wins and a 17.51 ERA in his other starts. Manager Joe Girardi reiterated Wednesday that Tanaka's issues are not physical. When asked if Tanaka went for any scans, Girardi said: "You just don't scan people. You just don't light them up inside and you don't want to turn them into Spiderman or Superman or something like that. RHP Masahiro Tanaka gave New York what it needed Monday night with the bullpen limited coming off Sunday's marathon. Tanaka (5-1) allowed three earned runs and 10 hits including a two-run home run by Joey Votto in the seventh. It was Votto's 10th home run this season. Tanaka walked one and struck out six over his 112 pitches. "I was able to keep my poise," Tanaka said, via a translator. "It was a long game last night. I did have that in my mind to rest the bullpen."

Tanaka got 15 outs, retiring the last 14 hitters in winning his third straight start and raising his career record to 42-17. He is 6-2 against Boston and has won five straight and is the first Yankee to shut out the Red Sox since Mike Mussina in 2002. "I enjoy the competition," Tanaka, speaking through an interpreter, said after pitching the Yanks' first shutout in almost three years. "I think a lot of people thought about how well he was pitching up to this point and that Chris Sale had the upper hand," Tanaka said. "I wanted to go in there and try to beat the odds, I guess."

Tanaka (2-1, 6.00 ERA) is 5-2 with a 4.05 ERA in 10 career starts against the Red Sox and 2-1 with a 4.34 ERA in five starts at Fenway. The Japanese-born right-hander won his second straight start last Wednesday, limiting the White Sox to one run, six hits and two walks while fanning a season-best six batters. Dustin Pedroia (7-for-23), Xander Bogaerts (6-for-27) and Hanley Ramirez (2-for-13) have all taken Tanaka deep. Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. (2-for-17) have three RBIs against him.

"I said this from the first day of spring training, that I understand what the contract says," he told reporters. "But it has nothing to do with how I perform out there on the mound.
