He made a start at the beginning of September, and that one was similarly brutal, so it seems doubtful that Martin will get another chance to start for the A's down the stretch. They'll most likely look for another option, even if that option is Barry Zito.

Jesse Chavez (fractured rib) has been shut down for the season, so there is a rotation spot up for grabs. Martin, 26, has struggled in 11 starts with Triple-A Nashville, posting a 5.10 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 60 innings. He is almost 40 innings behind his total of 156 from 2014, so pitching through the end of the season should not be a problem, although pitching effectively is much less of a certainty.

Martin was shelled on Tuesday night and with some time left in the Triple-A season, the A's must have thought he was better served working in Triple-A than he was on the expanded MLB roster.

Martin gave up five runs on six hits and a walk over three innings in a loss Tuesday against the Angels. He failed to strike out a batter.

Martin drew just one swinging strike in 56 pitches and was completely overmatched. He allowed a 5.40 ERA in 21.2 relief innings for the Braves earlier this year and had a 5.33 ERA in 54 innings as a starter for the Oakland's Triple-A club after he was acquired in a trade in July and doesn't look like he's ready for the big time yet.
